The Key My Wife Left Behind / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Hidden Room

Nobody spoke.

Thomas stared at the photograph on my phone.

The confidence was gone.

The calm mask had disappeared.

For the first time since he entered the room, he looked afraid.

“Who?”” I asked.

Thomas didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is here?””

He looked toward the hallway.

Then toward the ceiling.

Like he was listening.

“Marcus, you need to leave.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because you don’t understand the danger.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I understand one thing.””

I pointed at the safe.

“My wife left warnings.””

I pointed at Thomas.

“My brother hid information.””

I pointed at Vanessa.

“My wife knew more than she told me.””

Then I looked toward the hallway.

“And now someone is inside my house.””

I stepped closer.

“So nobody leaves until I get answers.””

Thomas looked at me.

For a moment, I thought he would fight.

Instead, he looked tired.

“Angela knew this would happen.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She knew you would react exactly like this.””

“Like what?””

“Like a soldier.””

The word hit me.

Thomas continued.

“You see a threat. You move toward it.””

I said nothing.

“Angela loved that about you.””

His voice softened.

“But she also feared it.””

My anger returned.

“She feared me?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“She feared what you would do when you discovered the truth.””

I looked at the photograph.

“What truth?””

Thomas walked toward the safe.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like every step mattered.

He reached behind the documents.

“There is something else.””

I immediately stopped him.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Angela didn’t hide everything in the safe.””

He pressed a small section of the wooden interior.

A click sounded.

The back wall moved.

Another hidden compartment.

My heart sank.

Inside was a small recording device.

And another envelope.

Eli whispered:

“Mom left all of that?””

I nodded slowly.

Thomas picked up the recorder.

But before he could press anything, I grabbed it.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Marcus.””

“You don’t control this anymore.””

I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then Angela’s voice.

“Marcus.””

My knees nearly gave out.

Her voice.

Again.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

“If you are hearing this, then you found the second compartment.””

I looked at Thomas.

He lowered his eyes.

Angela continued.

“There are things I need you to know. Things I couldn’t tell you because telling you would put Eli in danger.””

Eli moved closer.

My hand went around his shoulder.

Angela’s voice continued.

“First, Vanessa did betray you.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

But Angela wasn’t finished.

“However, she did not start this.””

The room became silent.

Thomas looked at the floor.

Angela continued.

“The person who caused this is someone who has been watching our family for a long time.””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who knows every weakness.””

The recording crackled.

“Marcus, do not trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

Because every person in the room had used those exact words.

The recording continued.

“There is one person who knows the entire truth.””

A pause.

A long one.

Then Angela said:

“Eli.””

My son froze.

I looked down.

“What?””

The recording played again.

“Eli has something I hid before I died.””

My heart stopped.

Angela’s voice became softer.

“Something only he can reveal.””

Eli shook his head.

“I don’t have anything.””

Then the recording ended.

No explanation.

No answer.

Just silence.

Everyone looked at Eli.

He looked terrified.

“I don’t know what Mom means.””

I believed him.

But before I could speak, the lights in the house suddenly shut off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A second later, a voice came from the hallway.

A voice none of us expected.

A child’s voice.

“Eli.””

My son grabbed my hand.

Because the voice knew his name.

And it wasn’t anyone inside the room.

May you like

It came from the hidden part of the house.

The place none of us knew existed.
