Chapter 11: The Daughter in the Missing File

At 7:10 the following morning, Darius stood outside the bank where his father had kept the safe-deposit box.

Detective Harris had arrived with two officers. Tanya stood beside Darius, clutching a folder filled with copies of the adoption records.

Nobody spoke as the bank manager led them through a secured corridor.

The brass key felt unnaturally heavy in Darius's pocket.

His father had hidden something for eight years.

Something that might explain the stolen children, the forged documents, and the night he died.

The manager stopped in front of a steel door.

"Mr. Cole, your father's account has remained active under the instructions he left. We will need to verify your identity before proceeding.""

Darius handed over his identification.

After several minutes, the manager returned with a small metal box.

He placed it on a table inside a private room.

"Your father left specific instructions that the contents were to be viewed only by his eldest son.""

Detective Harris raised an eyebrow.

"That instruction no longer overrides a lawful investigation.""

"Of course," the manager replied.

"The bank has been advised of your presence.""

Darius inserted the brass key.

It turned smoothly.

Inside the box lay three envelopes, a small cassette recorder, a photograph, and a thick ledger bound with a black elastic band.

Darius reached for the photograph first.

It showed his father standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.

Beside him stood a woman Darius had never seen.

She wore a simple gray dress and had one hand pressed against her mouth, as if she had just finished crying.

On the back, his father had written:

*For the child I could not protect.*

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

Tanya leaned over his shoulder.

"Who's the woman?""

"I don't know.""

Detective Harris examined the photograph.

"She may be connected to the missing adoption file.""

Darius opened the first envelope.

Inside was a letter in his father's handwriting.

Darius,

If you're reading this, then I have failed to correct a terrible mistake. I believed I could protect the family by keeping certain truths hidden. Instead, my silence allowed other people to make choices that should never have been theirs.

Martin Hale has been using the company to conceal illegal payments. He has also been arranging adoptions through private intermediaries, sometimes without the consent of the biological parents.

I discovered this too late.

Darius stopped reading.

His father had known.

He had known children were being taken from their families.

He had known Martin was using the company to hide the money.

And instead of going to the police, he had tried to manage the problem privately.

Tanya read over his shoulder.

"Keep going.""

Darius continued.

There are two children connected to this matter. One is my grandson, Lucas. The other is a girl whose identity has been deliberately concealed.

I have reason to believe the girl was placed with a family that has no knowledge of the circumstances of her birth.

If Martin discovers her identity, he will use her to destroy what remains of this family.

Darius lowered the letter.

"Lucas was known to Dad before he died.""

Tanya shook her head.

"Maybe he suspected. But why would he write about a second child?""

Darius opened the second envelope.

Inside was a list of names, dates, and payments.

Several entries were marked with red ink.

One name appeared repeatedly.

*Naomi Whitmore.*

Another appeared beside it.

*Rebecca Mercer.*

And a third name was circled so heavily that the paper had nearly torn.

*Evelyn Cole.*

Darius went cold.

"Evelyn was our mother.""

Tanya took the paper from him.

"Why would Mom's name be here?""

Detective Harris leaned closer.

"Do you know whether your mother had any connection to the adoption records?""

"No," Darius said.

"She died when I was twenty. She was a schoolteacher. She had nothing to do with Dad's business.""

Tanya's face had gone pale.

"There's a date beside her name.""

Darius looked.

The date was sixteen years earlier.

The same year Lucas was born.

He opened the third envelope.

A single sheet of paper lay inside.

It contained a hospital record for a baby girl born at St. Catherine's Hospital on the same day as the twins.

Mother: Unknown.

Father: Unknown.

Adoptive placement: Pending.

Underneath, in his father's handwriting, were five words.

*The girl was never adopted.*

Darius stared at the page.

"Then where is she?""

Tanya looked toward Detective Harris.

"We need to find the original hospital records.""

The detective nodded.

"We'll request them immediately.""

Darius reached for the cassette recorder.

A small label was attached to the front.

*For Darius. Listen before you confront Naomi.*

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then his father's voice emerged.

"Darius, if you're hearing this, I need you to understand that I made a decision I will regret for the rest of my life.""

A pause.

"I knew about Lucas before he was born. Martin told me Elena was considering adoption because she believed you had abandoned her. I thought I could intervene quietly and arrange for the children to be returned once the legal situation was resolved.""

Darius gripped the table.

His father had known about the twins.

He had known Elena was being deceived.

And he had failed to stop it.

The recording continued.

"Naomi came to me with another request. She told me she had discovered a baby girl who had been abandoned at the hospital. She said the child's mother was dead and no family could be located.""

Darius looked at Tanya.

Naomi had been involved in a second child's disappearance before Lucas and Maya were even born.

His father's voice grew weaker.

"I later discovered that the mother was alive. She had been told her baby had died. I tried to find her, but the records had been altered.""

A sharp breath.

"The child's name was Grace.""

The recording crackled.

"Grace was never adopted. She was taken to a private residence under a false identity. I believe Naomi knows where she is.""

Then came a sound Darius could not identify.

A chair scraping.

A door opening.

His father's voice, suddenly urgent.

"Who are you?""

A woman's voice answered.

Naomi's.

"You shouldn't have kept the original, Edward.""

The recording ended.

Darius sat motionless.

Tanya's eyes filled with tears.

"She was there when he died.""

Detective Harris immediately reached for his radio.

"We need to locate Naomi Whitmore.""

Darius stood.

"She's at the hospital.""

The detective looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"She gave me the key last night. She wanted me to open the box. She knew exactly what was inside.""

Tanya closed the ledger.

"Then she may be waiting for us.""

Darius took the photograph of his father holding the baby.

For the first time, he noticed something in the corner of the image.

A hospital bracelet around the infant's wrist.

The name was barely visible.

But it wasn't Grace.

It was *Maya Cole*.

Darius felt his breath leave him.

His daughter had been part of this conspiracy from the very beginning.

And if his father had known the truth, then Maya's birth might have been the reason everything had started.

His phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

Maya was sitting alone in the hospital cafeteria, holding a carton of milk.

Behind her stood a woman wearing a nurse's uniform.

Naomi.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph contained a single sentence.

*Bring the ledger, or the girl learns what her mother really did.*
