Chapter 13: The Woman Who Came Back from the Dead

Tanya couldn't feel her fingers.

She stood in the hospital corridor with her phone pressed against her ear, listening to her husband breathe on the other end.

"Michael, tell me exactly what you see.""

"She's sitting in our living room. She's wearing a blue coat. She looks older, obviously, but Tanya..."" His voice cracked.

"It's your mother.""

Tanya looked at Darius.

He had heard enough to understand.

"Put him on speaker," he said.

She did.

"Michael, this is Darius. Is the woman alone?""

"No. There's a man outside in a black car. He hasn't come in. He's just sitting there watching the house.""

Detective Harris stepped closer.

"Don't approach the man. Don't let the woman leave. We're sending officers to your address.""

"Wait," Tanya interrupted.

"Ask her something only our mother would know.""

Michael relayed the question.

A few seconds passed.

Then he returned.

"She says the summer you were nine, you broke Dad's favorite watch and blamed Darius. She says you cried so hard you threw up, and she told Dad the watch had fallen off the kitchen counter by itself.""

Tanya's knees nearly buckled.

Nobody else knew that story.

Not even Darius.

"Ask her what she called me when I was little," Tanya whispered.

Michael repeated the question.

The answer came immediately.

"Little bird.""

Tanya covered her mouth.

Their mother had called her that until the day she supposedly died.

Darius took his sister's free hand.

"Don't jump to conclusions," he said quietly, though his own voice lacked conviction.

"We need proof.""

Tanya nodded, but tears were already streaming down her face.

"Michael, don't let her leave.""

"I won't.""

The call ended.

Detective Harris was already speaking into his radio.

"We need officers at the Cole residence immediately. Possible unidentified person connected to an active kidnapping and adoption investigation.""

Naomi stood between two uniformed officers near the elevators. She had stopped struggling, but her eyes followed every movement in the corridor.

Darius approached her.

"Did you know Evelyn was alive?""

Naomi hesitated.

"Yes.""

Tanya made a broken sound.

"You knew our mother was alive, and you let us believe she was dead?""

"I didn't know where she was for most of those years.""

"That's not what I asked!""

Naomi flinched.

Darius raised a hand to calm his sister.

"Start talking. Now.""

Naomi looked toward the hospital room where Elena and Maya waited.

"Your mother didn't die in the accident the family was told about. She survived. But she was severely injured, and Martin arranged for her to be moved to a private medical facility under another name.""

"Why?"" Darius demanded.

"Because she had discovered that Martin was changing adoption records. She knew about Grace, and she knew he was using the children to manipulate families with money and influence.""

Tanya stared at her.

"Then why didn't she come home?""

"She tried.""

Naomi's voice broke.

"She sent letters. Martin intercepted them. He told her that Edward had chosen to protect the family's reputation rather than risk prison. He told her you were both better off believing she was dead.""

Darius shook his head.

"That doesn't explain why she stayed away for so long.""

"No," Naomi admitted.

"It doesn't.""

For once, she seemed to have no defense.

Then she reached into her coat and removed a folded sheet of paper.

"Edward gave me this shortly before he died. He said if anything happened to him, I was to make sure it reached you.""

Darius took it.

The paper contained a handwritten message.

Naomi,

I know Evelyn is alive. I know Martin has threatened her. If I confront him tonight, I may not come back.

Protect the children. Do not let him use Grace against them.

And if you have any conscience left, tell Darius what happened to the coffee.

Darius read the last sentence twice.

He looked up.

"What happened to the coffee?""

Naomi's face crumpled.

"I didn't poison your father.""

"Then tell me what you did.""

She looked toward the floor.

"Grant came to the house that evening. He said Martin had asked him to collect some documents. Your father was expecting him, but when Grant arrived, they argued.""

"About what?""

"The money. The adoption files. The children. Everything.""

Naomi swallowed.

"Edward had a heart condition. He took medication every night. Grant told me that if Edward took his usual dose with the coffee, it would make him sleepy enough that Grant could search his study without interference.""

Darius felt sick.

"You gave him the coffee.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew what was in it?""

"I thought it was his normal medication.""

"Thought?""

Naomi began to cry.

"Grant gave me a different bottle. He said the pharmacy had changed the packaging. I believed him.""

Tanya stepped closer.

"You expect us to believe you accidentally helped murder our father?""

"No," Naomi whispered.

"I expect you to hate me. But I need you to understand that I didn't know until it was too late.""

Darius wanted to strike something. He wanted to scream until the walls shook.

Instead, he asked the question that mattered.

"Who killed him?""

Naomi lifted her eyes.

"Grant.""

Before anyone could respond, Detective Harris's radio crackled.

"Units at the Cole residence. We have a situation.""

Harris turned away.

"Report.""

"We found an elderly woman matching the description. She has identification under the name Evelyn Brooks. She's cooperating. But the man in the black car has fled.""

"Do you have a plate?""

"Partial plate only. We're checking nearby cameras.""

Harris lowered the radio.

Tanya was already moving toward the exit.

"I have to see her.""

"Not alone," Harris said.

"We'll take you.""

Darius turned to Naomi.

"You said you didn't know where Evelyn was. But you knew she was alive.""

"I knew she was alive when Martin moved her. I didn't know where she went after she escaped the facility.""

"Escaped?""

"She left six years ago. She was trying to find Grace. Martin had told her the baby had died, but she discovered the truth.""

Darius felt another piece of the puzzle slide into place.

"Then why come back now?""

Naomi looked at him.

"Because someone sent her the same photograph you received.""

The picture of the baby in the yellow blanket.

The one marked with his father's handwriting.

Naomi continued.

"Someone told her that the original records had surfaced. They promised her she could finally find Grace.""

Darius looked toward Tanya.

"Grant.""

Naomi nodded.

"He wants the ledger. He knows Evelyn is the only person who can prove how the original records were altered. If he can control her, he can make the entire case disappear.""

"And Lucas?"" Darius demanded.

"I don't know where Grant has taken him.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not.""

Darius stared at her.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Lucas sat in a dim room with his hands tied behind his back. A bruise darkened his cheek, but his eyes were open.

Below the photograph were six words.

*Bring the ledger to the old chapel. Alone.*

Darius's blood ran cold.

A second message followed.

*Or your son dies before midnight.*

He showed the screen to Detective Harris.

"We have to go.""

Harris shook his head.

"We'll coordinate a tactical response.""

"They said alone.""

"They want you isolated.""

"Then they'll have to settle for disappointed.""

Darius turned to Tanya.

"Go to Michael's house. Find out everything Evelyn knows. Don't let her leave with anyone.""

Tanya grabbed his arm.

"You're not going alone.""

"I'm not going to surrender the ledger. I'm going to get Lucas.""

"And if Grant has a gun?""

"Then I'll make sure he doesn't get the chance to use it.""

Tanya's eyes filled again.

"Don't make me lose you, too.""

Darius held her tightly.

"You won't.""

He didn't know if it was a promise he could keep.

As he followed Detective Harris toward the parking garage, another message arrived.

This one contained a voice recording.

Lucas's voice came through, weak but unmistakable.

"Dad, if you're hearing this, don't bring the ledger.""

A thud.

A sharp intake of breath.

Then Lucas whispered something that made Darius stop walking.

"Ask Grandma what she did the night Grandpa died.""

The recording ended.

Darius looked back at the hospital.

For eight years, he had believed his mother was dead.

May you like

Now she was alive.

And his son was telling him that she might hold the final secret behind his father's murder.
