Chapter 4: The Boy Who Knew His Name

Darius read the message three times before he understood what frightened him most.

Not that his son was alive.

Not that someone had apparently raised the boy under a secret arrangement connected to Naomi's family.

It was the final sentence.

*Your son knows who you are.*

Someone had spent eight years keeping Darius away from his children. Now that he had discovered the truth, that same person wanted him to know the boy was watching.

"Darius?""

Tanya's voice brought him back to the hospital room.

Elena lay beneath the white sheets while two nurses adjusted her oxygen and checked the monitor. Maya stood beside her mother, clutching her hand with both of hers.

Darius slipped his phone into his pocket.

"What's wrong?"" Tanya asked.

"Nothing I can explain right now.""

She studied his face.

"That's the face you make when you're about to do something reckless.""

"My son is alive.""

Tanya went still.

"What?""

He showed her the photograph.

She stared at the teenage boy's face, then looked toward Elena.

"Oh, my God.""

"Someone knows where he is," Darius whispered.

"And someone knows I've found out.""

Tanya took a screenshot of the message.

"Don't reply yet. We need to save everything.""

"I need to find him.""

"And we will. But if someone has been hiding this child for eight years, charging in without understanding the situation could put him in danger.""

Darius glanced at Maya.

His daughter was watching them.

"Can I talk to you outside?"" he asked Tanya.

She nodded and kissed Maya's forehead before following him into the corridor.

As soon as the door closed, Darius showed her the photograph's background. A red-brick house stood behind the boy, with a white porch and a tall maple tree leaning toward the street.

Tanya frowned.

"I've seen that house.""

"Where?""

"At our father's old estate. There was a guesthouse on the property that he rented to a family friend.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

"Martin Hale.""

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

"The lawyer?""

"Yes. But he didn't live there permanently. His wife, Vivian, used it when she wanted to get away from the city.""

Darius stared at the picture.

"You're saying my son might have grown up on our family's property?""

"I'm saying we need to verify it.""

He opened the message again and typed a reply.

Who are you? How do you know my son?

The response came almost immediately.

Someone who watched your family destroy his.

Darius's jaw tightened.

Tell me where he is.

Three dots appeared, disappeared, then appeared again.

Finally, a new message arrived.

Tomorrow. Six p.m. Come alone to the old greenhouse behind the Hale property.

Tanya read it over his shoulder.

"Absolutely not.""

"If I wait, they could move him.""

"And if you walk into a trap, they could do worse.""

Darius looked through the glass panel in the hospital door. Maya had climbed onto the chair beside her mother's bed, her little hand resting on Elena's arm.

"I've already lost eight years with my children," he said.

"I'm not losing another day.""

Tanya took his phone and copied the message.

"Then we do this carefully. We tell no one outside this room until we know whom we're dealing with.""

Darius wanted to argue.

Instead, he nodded.

For the first time since the wedding, he felt something stronger than anger.

Hope.

And hope frightened him more than he wanted to admit.

At 4:15 that afternoon, Elena finally woke fully from the medication that had left her drifting in and out of sleep.

Maya was asleep in the chair beside her, her small body curled beneath a hospital blanket. Darius sat at the foot of the bed, holding a cup of coffee he had forgotten to drink.

Elena looked at him.

"Did you see him?""

Darius immediately leaned forward.

"The boy in the photograph?""

She nodded.

"Someone sent me a picture. I think I know where he might be.""

Tears filled her eyes.

"He's grown so much.""

"You've seen him?""

"Once.""

Darius stared at her.

"When?""

"About four years ago. I followed a lead to Vivian Hale's house. I stood across the street and watched him playing in the yard.""

"Why didn't you go to him?""

"Because Vivian came outside and saw me. She told me that if I tried to take him, she'd have me arrested for stalking. She had papers showing that I had surrendered my parental rights.""

"But you never signed them.""

"I know. But I couldn't prove it.""

Darius set his coffee down.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Elena looked away.

"Because I thought you had chosen Naomi. I believed you had signed the adoption papers yourself.""

"I never did.""

"I understand that now.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Do you remember the day I disappeared?""

"I remember every minute.""

"I went to your apartment that morning. I was going to tell you I was pregnant.""

Darius swallowed.

"You told me you were going to your cousin's.""

"Naomi was waiting outside. She said you had asked her to collect your things because you didn't want to see me.""

Darius shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

"I know. But she had a letter with your signature. She showed me bank statements and said you had discovered I'd been taking money from your account.""

"I never wrote that letter.""

"She told me if I came near you again, she'd make sure you went to prison for financial fraud. She said she had evidence that I had stolen money from your family.""

Elena's voice cracked.

"I was twenty-four, pregnant, and terrified. I believed her.""

Darius covered his mouth with his hand.

All those years, he had thought Elena had abandoned him.

All those years, she had believed he had abandoned her.

Naomi had not merely stolen a relationship.

She had built two separate realities and trapped them both inside them.

"Why didn't you tell me after Maya was born?"" he asked gently.

Elena looked at their daughter.

"Because by then, Naomi had already convinced me that you had signed away both babies. She told me you wanted a new life with her. She said if I contacted you, she would have Maya taken from me too.""

Darius rose and walked to the window.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Then he turned.

"Who sent you the message about Vivian's house?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you ever hear from Martin Hale again?""

Elena hesitated.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

Darius moved closer.

"What did he want?""

"He came to the hospital after my diagnosis. He said he knew where our son was, and he wanted to make things right.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he said Naomi had found out he was planning to talk.""

Elena gripped the bedsheet.

"He told me she was coming for the boy.""

Darius's phone vibrated.

Another message.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only a sentence.

Ask Vivian what happened to the original adoption file. She knows why your son was never supposed to find you.

Darius looked up.

Elena was staring at his phone.

"Whatever you do," she whispered, "don't believe the first person who tells you the boy is safe.""

May you like

Then she caught his wrist.

"Because the last time I believed someone, I lost both my children.""
