Chapter 12: The Mother Who Never Told the Truth
Darius called the hospital before the elevator reached the ground floor.
"Lock down the pediatric ward and the cafeteria," he told the security supervisor.
"A woman named Naomi Whitmore is on the premises. She may be attempting to remove a child.""
The supervisor asked him to repeat the name.
Darius did.
Then he turned toward Detective Harris.
"She's threatening Maya.""
The detective immediately contacted the hospital police liaison.
"We'll get officers there ahead of you," he said.
"Do not approach her alone.""
Darius barely heard him.
His mind was fixed on the photograph.
Maya sat at a cafeteria table with her feet swinging beneath the chair. She looked small and innocent, unaware that the woman who had tried to destroy her family was standing directly behind her.
And beneath that photograph was the threat.
Bring the ledger, or the girl learns what her mother really did.
Darius didn't know which part frightened him more.
The threat itself.
Or the possibility that Naomi was about to reveal another truth that would destroy Elena.
When Darius arrived at St. Catherine's, two security officers were stationed outside Elena's room.
Maya was sitting on the bed beside her mother, clutching a stuffed rabbit a nurse had given her.
Elena looked up as Darius entered.
"What's happened?""
He closed the door.
"Naomi is here.""
Elena's face went pale.
"Where?""
"We don't know yet.""
Maya immediately grabbed his hand.
"Is she going to take me away?""
Darius knelt in front of her.
"No one is taking you anywhere.""
"But she looked at me in the cafeteria.""
He froze.
"You saw her?""
Maya nodded.
"She said she wanted to talk to Mommy. Then she asked me whether I knew why Mommy had chosen me.""
Elena covered her mouth.
Darius looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
Elena began crying.
"I was afraid this day would come.""
He sat beside her.
"Elena, whatever it is, you need to tell me now.""
She looked at Maya, then at Darius.
"I didn't know about Lucas at first. When I discovered I was carrying twins, I was terrified. We were young, and I didn't know how we would afford two babies.""
Darius nodded.
"I know.""
"But I never considered giving them up. I loved them both before I ever saw their faces.""
"Then why did Naomi say you wanted an adoption?""
"Because she made me believe you had signed the papers.""
Elena swallowed hard.
"But there was another baby at the hospital that night. A little girl named Grace. Her mother had been admitted under a false name, and the hospital staff believed she had died during childbirth.""
Darius stared at her.
"You knew Grace?""
"I heard the nurses talking about her. She was in the nursery beside Maya and Lucas. I remember seeing her through the glass.""
"Then what happened?""
"Naomi came into my room the next morning. She said the baby had no family and that she was going to help find her a home.""
Darius's voice sharpened.
"Did you give her permission?""
"No. I told her I couldn't make that decision. I told her Grace's mother deserved a chance to raise her daughter.""
Elena looked down at her hands.
"Naomi said she would find the mother. She promised me.""
"And you believed her?""
"I wanted to believe someone was doing the right thing.""
Darius looked away.
He could not blame Elena for every lie Naomi had told. But he needed to know why his father had connected Maya to the missing child.
"Why is Maya's name on the hospital bracelet in the photograph?""
Elena stared at him.
"What photograph?""
He showed her the image from the safe-deposit box.
Elena's eyes widened.
"That's not Maya.""
Darius felt his heart stop.
"What?""
"The baby in that photograph isn't Maya.""
He stared at the picture.
The infant wore a pale yellow blanket. Maya's hospital records described a pink blanket.
Elena pointed toward the bracelet.
"Look at the date. That's the date Grace was born. The bracelet must have been changed.""
Darius felt a cold wave wash over him.
Someone had switched the identities of the babies.
But why?
And where was Grace now?
Before he could ask, the hospital room door opened.
Naomi stood in the doorway.
She had changed out of the nurse's uniform and was wearing a dark coat. Two security officers stood behind her.
"Please," she said.
"I need five minutes.""
Darius rose.
"You threatened my daughter.""
"I didn't threaten her.""
"You sent me a photograph of her and demanded the ledger.""
Naomi looked toward Elena.
"I needed to know whether you had opened the box.""
Elena's voice shook.
"You told me Grace had been adopted.""
Naomi closed her eyes.
"I thought that was the safest option.""
"For whom?"" Elena demanded.
"For the child? Or for you?""
Naomi flinched.
Darius stepped between them.
"Tell me where Grace is.""
Naomi looked at him.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not lying. I lost track of her years ago.""
"How?""
Naomi took a shaky breath.
"Martin arranged for Grace to be moved to another family. The records were altered, and I was told the placement had been completed.""
"Who told you?""
"Your father.""
Darius stared at her.
"My father helped you?""
"He believed he was protecting the child.""
"From what?""
Naomi looked toward Maya.
"From the truth about her birth.""
Elena shook her head.
"No. That's not true.""
Naomi's eyes filled with tears.
"Elena, you don't understand. Grace's mother wasn't a stranger. She was connected to the Cole family.""
Darius felt his pulse hammer.
"Who was she?""
Naomi hesitated.
Then she looked directly at Tanya, who had just entered the room with Detective Harris.
"Your mother.""
Tanya stopped.
Darius stared at Naomi.
"That's impossible. Mom died years before any of this happened.""
"Your mother gave birth to Grace before she married your father," Naomi said.
"She was seventeen. Her family told everyone the baby had died.""
Tanya's face drained of color.
"No.""
Naomi reached into her coat and removed a folded hospital record.
"Your mother was Evelyn Cole. Her birth name was Evelyn Brooks.""
Elena gasped.
Darius looked at the document.
The mother listed on Grace's birth certificate was Evelyn Brooks.
Tanya's hands began to shake.
"Our mother had a child before she married Dad?""
Naomi nodded.
"Your father found out after they were married. He promised Evelyn that he'd protect the baby. But when the records resurfaced, Martin used them to blackmail him.""
Tanya sank into the nearest chair.
"Why didn't Dad tell us?""
"Because he believed he could fix everything without destroying your mother's reputation.""
Darius felt anger rising in his chest.
"He let children disappear to protect a family secret.""
Naomi looked at him with hollow eyes.
"Yes.""
The admission silenced everyone.
Then Tanya lifted her head.
"If Grace was our mother's daughter, then she's my sister.""
Naomi nodded.
"And Darius's sister.""
Darius stared at the hospital record.
The child everyone had spent years trying to locate wasn't another stranger.
She was family.
His father's hidden daughter.
Tanya's older sister.
And perhaps the reason he had spent eight years searching for answers without ever finding them.
Detective Harris took the document.
"We'll need to verify this through official records. Ms. Whitmore, you'll be coming with us.""
Naomi didn't resist.
Instead, she looked at Elena.
"I'm sorry.""
Elena turned away.
"Don't apologize to me. Tell the truth.""
Naomi lowered her head.
"I will.""
As the officers escorted her toward the door, she suddenly stopped.
"Darius.""
He looked at her.
"There is one thing you need to know about Grace.""
"What?""
Naomi's eyes filled with tears.
"The family who raised her doesn't know she was adopted.""
Darius stared at her.
"Then how did they get her?""
Naomi's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because Martin didn't place Grace with strangers. He arranged for her to be raised by someone who believed the child was his own.""
Tanya rose slowly.
"Who?""
Naomi looked directly at her.
"Your husband.""
The room went silent.
Tanya's face turned white.
Her husband, Michael, had always told her they couldn't have children. They had spent years going through fertility treatments before finally accepting that parenthood might never happen for them.
But Naomi was saying something impossible.
That Michael had a daughter.
A daughter who was also Tanya's sister.
And that the child had been placed in their family under a lie.
Tanya's phone began ringing.
Michael's name appeared on the screen.
She answered with trembling fingers.
"Michael?""
His voice sounded strained.
"Tanya, listen to me. You need to come home immediately.""
"Why?""
A long silence.
Then he whispered, "Because someone just arrived at our house asking for Grace.""
Tanya gripped the phone.
"Who?""
Michael's answer shattered what little certainty remained.
"Your mother.""
Tanya went completely still.
"That's impossible. Mom is dead.""
"I know what the records say," Michael replied.
"But the woman standing in my living room has your mother's face.""
May you like
He took a shaky breath.
"And she says she's come to take her daughter home.""
