Chapter 6: The Signature That Destroyed a Family

Darius stared at the court order until the words blurred.

The document claimed that he had petitioned to terminate his parental rights sixteen years earlier, before Lucas was even born.

The dates were impossible.

The signature was forged.

And the court seal looked authentic.

He held the paper toward the greenhouse light.

"This is a fake.""

Naomi folded her arms.

"Is it?""

"You know it is.""

"Then prove it.""

Darius looked at Vivian.

"Tell me you never saw this before.""

Vivian's silence lasted only a second.

It was enough.

"You knew," Darius whispered.

Vivian lowered her eyes.

"I saw a copy years ago.""

"And you didn't tell me?""

"My husband said the order had been approved by the court. I believed him.""

"You said you suspected the original adoption was illegal.""

"I did.""

"Then why would you believe this?""

Vivian's face crumpled.

"Because I wanted to believe there was a reason I had been allowed to keep him.""

Darius stepped away from the table.

He had come here hoping to find his son.

Instead, he had discovered another person who had chosen silence over the truth.

Naomi watched him with a strange mixture of satisfaction and exhaustion.

"You see?"" she said.

"Everyone had a reason. Everyone made a choice. I'm the only one who has to stand here and take the blame.""

Darius turned toward her.

"You forged my signature.""

"I didn't create that document.""

"But you knew about it.""

She didn't answer.

"You knew my son was alive.""

Naomi's eyes flashed.

"I knew he was being cared for.""

"By a woman who was told she was protecting him from his own parents.""

"Vivian loved him.""

"That doesn't make what you did right!""

Naomi slapped the court order onto the table.

"You want to talk about right and wrong? Fine. Let's talk about Elena.""

Darius stiffened.

"What about her?""

"She was going to marry you. You were going to build a life with her, and I was supposed to watch from the sidelines forever.""

"You could have found someone else.""

"I didn't want someone else!""

Her voice cracked so violently that Vivian stepped backward.

Naomi gripped the edge of the table.

"I knew you before Elena did. I was there when your father humiliated you in front of his business partners. I was there when you nearly lost your company. I was there when you couldn't sleep because you were afraid you'd become him.""

Darius stared at her.

"And I was there when you met Elena," Naomi continued.

"I watched you become someone different. You smiled more. You laughed. You started talking about children and houses and growing old together.""

Tears ran down her cheeks.

"I wanted that life.""

"So you stole mine?""

"I thought I could make you love me.""

"By taking my children?""

Naomi shook her head.

"I never planned for it to go this far.""

Darius let out a bitter laugh.

"Eight years, Naomi. You had eight years to stop.""

"I know.""

"Every time you looked at me, you knew I had a daughter I didn't know about.""

"I know.""

"Every time you talked about our future, you knew there was a boy growing up under a false identity.""

Naomi covered her face.

"I know!""

The sound echoed against the greenhouse glass.

For a moment, Darius felt something dangerously close to pity.

Then he remembered Maya standing alone in the chapel, afraid that the man she had come to find would reject her.

The pity vanished.

"Where is Lucas?"" he demanded.

Naomi lowered her hands.

"At school.""

"It's Saturday.""

"He's at a friend's house.""

"Which friend?""

She hesitated.

Darius stepped closer.

"Tell me where my son is.""

Naomi reached into her coat pocket and took out her phone.

She showed him a photograph of Lucas sitting in the passenger seat of a car.

A man Darius didn't recognize sat behind the wheel.

"When was this taken?""

"Who is that?""

"Someone who can help you understand why you should leave this alone.""

Darius seized her wrist.

"Who?""

Naomi pulled away.

"His name is Grant Mercer.""

Vivian made a strangled sound.

Darius turned.

"What?""

Vivian's lips parted, but no words came out.

Naomi smiled faintly.

"Tell him, Vivian.""

Vivian shook her head.

"Please don't.""

"Tell him who Grant is.""

Vivian pressed both hands against the table.

"Grant is Martin Hale's son.""

Darius felt his blood run cold.

"Martin had a son?""

"Yes.""

"Why have I never heard of him?""

"Because he was raised by Martin's first wife. He lived overseas for years. He returned recently.""

Naomi looked at Darius.

"And he knows more about your father's death than anyone.""

The greenhouse seemed to shrink around him.

Darius thought of his father, a proud and stubborn man who had built a business from nothing and died before he could explain the secrets hidden inside it.

"You're saying Grant has my son?""

"I'm saying Grant knows where Lucas is.""

"Then call him.""

Naomi shook her head.

"He won't speak to you.""

"Why?""

"Because he believes you're responsible for everything that happened.""

Darius stared at her.

"How could he possibly believe that?""

Naomi tapped the court order.

"Because someone made sure he grew up believing your father destroyed his family. Grant thinks your family stole his inheritance, ruined his father, and then abandoned a child to protect the truth.""

Darius looked toward Vivian.

"Is any of that true?""

She looked away.

"Some of it.""

He felt the ground shift beneath him again.

"What does that mean?""

Vivian took a shaky breath.

"Your father did discover Martin's financial scheme. He threatened to report him. But Martin had already moved money from the estate into accounts connected to Grant's mother.""

"And my father?""

"Your father planned to expose him.""

"Did he?""

Vivian's eyes filled with tears.

"He died before he could.""

Darius remembered the last phone call he had received from his father. It had been late, just after midnight.

His father had sounded unusually gentle.

Whatever happens, Darius, don't sign anything you don't understand.

At the time, Darius had assumed it was another lecture about business.

Now he wondered what his father had been trying to tell him.

He took out his phone and called Tanya.

She answered immediately.

"Where are you? You missed your last check-in.""

"I'm at the greenhouse. Naomi is here. Vivian too.""

"Are you hurt?""

"No. But I need you to do something.""

"Anything.""

"Find everything you can about Grant Mercer. His father's financial records, the adoption agency, my father's estate. All of it.""

Tanya went quiet.

"You're saying this goes back to Dad?""

"Yes.""

"Then listen carefully. I found something while you were driving here.""

Darius straightened.

"What?""

"I went through Dad's old safe-deposit records. There was an account he opened under a different name six months before he died.""

"What name?""

"Edward Cole.""

Darius frowned.

"That's our grandfather's name.""

"I know. And the bank says the account was never closed.""

Darius looked at Vivian.

She had gone pale.

"What's in it?"" he asked.

Tanya lowered her voice.

"A sealed packet. The bank says Dad left instructions that it could only be opened by his eldest son, in person.""

Darius felt a strange pressure behind his ribs.

"Can you get access?""

"I can arrange an appointment for Monday morning. But there's more.""

"What?""

"The bank's records show that someone has been paying the storage fee every year since Dad died.""

Darius looked at Naomi.

She was watching him intently.

"Who?""

Tanya hesitated.

"Martin Hale.""

The line went silent.

Darius slowly lowered the phone.

Naomi's expression had changed.

For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely afraid.

Vivian whispered, "He must have found it.""

Darius turned toward her.

"Found what?""

Before she could answer, his phone rang again.

An unfamiliar number.

He accepted the call.

A boy's voice came through, tense and breathless.

"Darius Cole?""

Darius froze.

"Who is this?""

"My name is Lucas.""

Every sound in the greenhouse seemed to disappear.

Darius gripped the phone.

"Lucas?""

"I know who you are.""

His son's voice was steadier than he expected, but beneath it lay a tremor that sounded painfully familiar.

"Where are you, son?""

"Don't call me that.""

Darius closed his eyes.

"Okay. I'm sorry. Just tell me where you are.""

"I wanted to meet you once. Just once. I wanted to see whether you looked like the man in the pictures.""

"What pictures?""

"The ones Vivian kept hidden.""

Darius swallowed.

"She told you about me?""

"She told me you gave me away.""

"I didn't.""

"Then why is your signature on the papers?""

"Because someone forged it.""

Lucas laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone says when they get caught.""

Darius felt the words like a knife.

"Lucas, I know you have every reason not to trust me. But I swear I never knew you existed until yesterday.""

Silence.

Then Lucas asked, "Did you know about my sister?""

"Yes. I met Maya.""

"Is she okay?""

"She's with her mother right now.""

"Elena?""

"Yes.""

Lucas's breathing changed.

"Mom is alive?""

Darius went completely still.

He glanced at Vivian.

She looked horrified.

"Lucas," he said carefully, "who told you your mother was dead?""

The boy didn't answer.

Instead, he whispered, "I have something you need to see.""

"What is it?""

"A recording. My father left it before he died.""

Darius's heart hammered.

"Your father?""

"Martin Hale wasn't my biological father. But he raised me after Vivian took me in. Before he died, he told me there was a reason I couldn't meet you.""

Darius looked at Naomi.

She had stopped breathing.

Lucas continued.

"He said if I ever found out the truth, I should look for the man who signed away his children.""

Darius's grip tightened around the phone.

"Where are you?""

"At the old house.""

"Stay there. I'm coming.""

"No.""

The answer was immediate.

"Why not?""

"Because someone is already here.""

A loud crash sounded through the phone.

Lucas gasped.

Then a man's voice shouted in the background.

"Give me the phone!""

The line went dead.

Darius stared at the screen.

He called back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

He turned toward the greenhouse door.

Naomi stood in front of it.

"Move.""

She shook her head, tears streaming down her face.

"If you go there now, you'll make everything worse.""

Darius grabbed her shoulders.

"Someone has my son!""

She looked directly into his eyes.

"Yes.""

His hands went still.

Naomi swallowed hard.

"And if you want him alive, you need to know what your father did before you go looking for him.""

She reached into her purse and pulled out a small brass key.

Then she placed it in his palm.

"This opens the box your father left behind.""

Darius stared at the key.

"How did you get this?""

May you like

Naomi's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Because I was the last person who saw him alive.""
