Chapter 2: The Name on the Birth Certificate

Darius had imagined his wedding day a thousand times.

He had pictured his mother's favorite hymn, his sister crying during the vows, and the moment he would finally promise Naomi the future they had supposedly spent years building together.

He had never imagined standing in front of the altar with a photograph of a newborn daughter in his hand while his bride's secrets spilled across the floor.

“Everybody needs to leave,” Darius said.

The wedding guests exchanged uncertain looks.

Naomi immediately seized the opportunity.

“Darius, don't do this. You're upset. We can discuss everything privately.””

He turned toward her.

“You have thirty seconds to tell me where Elena is.””

Naomi's jaw tightened.

“I don't know.””

Tanya let out a humorless laugh.

“You've had eight years to practice that answer.””

Naomi spun toward her.

“You have no right to speak to me like that!””

“Actually, I do. You came into my brother's life, told him Elena had abandoned him, and spent the next eight years helping him believe he was the victim.””

“That's enough, Tanya!””

“No. What's enough is watching you humiliate this child because she accidentally exposed the truth you were so desperate to bury.””

Naomi's eyes flashed.

“I didn't humiliate her. She pulled my hair off in front of everyone!””

“Your wig,” Tanya corrected.

“You mean your wig.””

A few guests who had lingered near the doors exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Naomi looked around, realizing that every whispered conversation, every raised phone, and every shocked expression was working against her.

She lowered her voice.

“Darius, please. You know me. You know I love you.””

He looked down at the photograph again.

“Then help me understand why you were holding my newborn daughter while telling me you had never been pregnant.””

Naomi's shoulders dropped.

“I didn't know what to do.””

“You had eight years to figure it out.””

“I was twenty-four!””

“So was I.””

The words struck harder than Darius expected.

He remembered being twenty-four, standing in his small apartment with two cups of coffee growing cold on the kitchen counter while Elena packed a suitcase.

She had kissed his cheek and promised to call when she arrived at her cousin's house.

Two days later, Naomi had appeared at his door with tears in her eyes.

Elena had supposedly emptied their shared savings account and disappeared.

Naomi had brought him bank statements, a letter Elena had allegedly written, and enough sympathetic explanations to keep him from asking the questions that might have saved him eight years of regret.

Now he wondered whether any of it had been real.

“Where did you get the photograph?”” he asked Maya.

“My mommy kept it in a little blue box.””

“Did she tell you anything else?””

Maya nodded.

“She said you used to sing to her when she was scared.””

Darius went still.

He had sung to Elena once, during a thunderstorm, when the lights went out in their apartment. It was a ridiculous song his mother had made up when he was a child.

He had never sung it to Naomi.

“What song?”” he asked.

Maya hesitated, then softly hummed three notes.

Darius recognized the melody immediately.

He had sung it to Elena the night she told him she was pregnant.

His knees nearly buckled.

Tanya caught his elbow.

“Sit down before you fall.””

“I need to see the birth certificate.””

Tanya handed him another sheet from the envelope.

This one was an official-looking photocopy, stamped by the county records office. Maya's birth had been registered at St. Catherine's Hospital eight years earlier.

Mother: Elena Brooks.

Father: Darius Cole.

Darius traced the printed letters with his thumb.

“Why wasn't I notified?””

“Because the hospital had an address for Elena that wasn't yours,” Tanya said.

“I found the record three months ago when I was helping Mom sort through her old papers.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried. You told me I was jealous of Naomi and needed to stop digging into your relationship.””

Darius closed his eyes.

He remembered that argument. Tanya had asked him whether he had ever considered contacting Elena's family. He had accused her of trying to ruin his happiness.

His sister had left his apartment in tears.

“I should have listened.””

“Yes,” Tanya said quietly.

“You should have.””

Naomi crossed her arms.

“Do you honestly expect him to believe all this because a child showed up at our wedding?””

Tanya turned toward her.

“No. I expect him to read the documents, verify the records, and find out why you were at the hospital the day his daughter was born.””

Naomi's face stiffened.

“I was visiting a friend.””

“Which friend?””

“I'm not answering another interrogation.””

“Then answer this.”” Tanya stepped closer.

“Why did you withdraw eighteen thousand dollars from the account you shared with Darius two weeks before Elena disappeared?””

Darius looked up sharply.

“What?””

Naomi shook her head.

“That money was for a business investment.””

“You told me it was stolen,” Darius said.

“I was protecting your finances!””

“You told me Elena stole it.””

“She was going to leave you anyway!””

The words burst from Naomi before she could stop them.

Silence swallowed the chapel.

Darius stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Naomi covered her mouth.

Tanya's eyes narrowed.

“You knew Elena was leaving?””

“I didn't mean—”

“You knew she was leaving,” Darius repeated.

“You knew where she was going.””

Naomi looked toward the exit.

For one terrible moment, Darius thought she might run.

Instead, she straightened her veil and lifted her chin.

“I loved you. Elena was going to take you away from me. She was pregnant, she had your whole future in her hands, and you were ready to throw everything away for her.””

“Everything?”” Darius asked.

“I was going to marry her.””

“Exactly!””

Naomi's voice cracked.

“You were going to marry her, and I couldn't stand watching it happen.””

Tanya took a slow step backward.

“Oh, my God.””

Naomi's breathing became uneven.

“I thought if she left, you would eventually understand. I thought you would come to me.””

“So you lied about the money?””

“I was desperate!””

“And the baby?””

Naomi's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know she was going to have the baby that early.””

Darius felt a cold emptiness spread through him.

That was not a denial.

It was an admission.

Maya tugged at his sleeve.

“Are you my daddy?””

He looked down at her.

Her cheeks were wet. Her hands were shaking. One of her white shoes had come untied.

He wanted to answer immediately, to gather her into his arms and promise her that no one would ever make her feel unwanted again.

But he had learned, in a single morning, how dangerous promises could be.

“I believe you may be,” he said gently.

“And I'm going to find out everything I can.””

Maya nodded, trying to be brave.

“Mommy said you would say that.””

Darius swallowed.

“What else did she say?””

Maya reached into her dress pocket and produced a small folded note.

The paper had been creased so many times that the edges were beginning to split.

She handed it to him.

The handwriting was delicate, unmistakably familiar.

Darius, if Maya finds you, it means I couldn't come myself. Please don't trust the story they told you about my leaving. I never wanted to abandon you.

He read it twice.

Then a third time.

At the bottom was a phone number and an address.

Tanya leaned over his shoulder.

“That's an address in Westbridge. Elena's old neighborhood.””

Darius immediately took out his phone.

Naomi lunged for it.

“Don't call anyone!””

He stepped away.

“Why?””

“Because you don't know what she's capable of!””

“Who? Elena?””

Naomi said nothing.

Darius dialed the number on the note.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?””

Darius's throat tightened.

“Elena?””

There was a long silence.

Then he heard a sharp, frightened breath.

“Darius?””

He gripped the phone so hard his knuckles whitened.

“Where are you? I've been looking for you for eight years.””

The woman's voice broke.

“Please tell me Maya is with you.””

“She is.””

“Oh, thank God.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Tell me what happened.””

Elena began to cry.

“I tried to come back. I swear I tried. But Naomi told me that if I ever contacted you again, she would make sure you lost everything.””

Darius looked at Naomi.

She stood beneath the altar lights, motionless, her torn veil trailing over the floor.

“What did she do to you?”” he asked.

Elena's answer came in a whisper.

“She showed me the adoption papers.””

Darius's stomach twisted.

“What adoption papers?””

“The ones with your signature on them.””

He stared at the birth certificate.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know that now,” Elena said.

“But eight years ago, Naomi showed me documents saying you had agreed to give Maya up. She said you wanted nothing to do with either of us.””

Darius could barely breathe.

“Where are you now?””

“St. Catherine's Hospital.””

“Why?””

Elena hesitated.

Then she whispered, “Because I'm dying, Darius.””

The phone slipped slightly in his hand.

“What?””

“The doctors say I don't have much time. Maya knows I'm sick, but she doesn't know how bad it is. I sent her to you because I couldn't bear the thought of her being alone.””

Darius looked at Maya, who was watching his face with frightened eyes.

He crouched in front of her and held out his hand.

“Sweetheart, I'm going to take you to your mother.””

Maya grabbed his fingers.

“Will she still be there?””

He could not promise her that.

Instead, he squeezed her hand.

“We're going to go as fast as we can.””

Behind him, Naomi began sobbing.

“Darius, please. You don't understand what happened after Elena left.””

He stood and turned toward her.

“Then you're coming with us.””

Naomi's eyes widened.

“What?””

“You're going to look me in the eye and explain every document, every lie, and every dollar you stole.””

“I didn't steal anything!””

Tanya lifted the envelope.

“Then you won't mind explaining it to the police.””

Naomi's expression changed.

She looked at Tanya, then at Darius, then at Maya.

Finally, her gaze settled on the silver hospital bracelet in Maya's hand.

May you like

And she whispered something that made Darius stop cold.

“Ask Elena why she didn't tell you about the second baby.””
