Chapter 14: The Last Confession

The old chapel stood beyond a narrow road bordered by dead trees and rusted fencing.

It had been abandoned for nearly twenty years, its stained-glass windows shattered and its wooden doors hanging crookedly from their hinges.

Darius arrived with the ledger secured beneath his jacket.

Detective Harris had insisted on following him, but Darius had refused to let officers approach the building until Lucas's location was confirmed.

They compromised on a surveillance team positioned beyond the tree line.

Darius would enter alone.

The officers would move only when Harris gave the signal.

It was a dangerous plan.

It was also the only one Darius could live with.

Inside the chapel, dust covered the pews. Moonlight slipped through the broken windows, casting jagged shapes across the floor.

"Grant!"" Darius called.

His voice echoed through the empty building.

A door creaked somewhere behind the altar.

Then Grant Mercer stepped into view.

He wore a dark coat and held a pistol pointed toward the floor.

Lucas stood behind him, his wrists bound, his face bruised but alert.

Darius's heart lurched.

"Let him go.""

Grant smiled without warmth.

"You're remarkably predictable, Darius.""

"He's a sixteen-year-old boy. Whatever your problem is with me, take it up with me.""

"Oh, I intend to.""

Grant motioned toward the altar.

"Put the ledger down.""

Darius slowly removed it from his jacket.

He placed it on the dusty floor.

"Now release Lucas.""

Grant laughed.

"You still think this is about money.""

"Isn't it?""

"Money is just paper. The ledger is leverage. Names, payments, signatures. It can destroy people who have spent decades building respectable lives.""

He gestured toward Lucas.

"And this boy has become a problem because Martin told him too much before he died.""

Darius kept his eyes on his son.

"Lucas, are you hurt?""

"I'm fine.""

"Don't lie to me.""

Lucas swallowed.

"My ribs hurt.""

Darius felt fury burn through him.

Grant pressed the gun against Lucas's shoulder.

"Touching. Truly. Now tell me, Darius, did Naomi explain what happened to your father?""

"She said you changed his medication.""

Grant's smile disappeared.

"Naomi has always been a coward. She wanted the rewards of power without accepting the cost.""

"Did you kill Edward?""

Grant stared at him.

"Your father was going to destroy everything. He thought he could hand Martin's records to the police and walk away as the hero. He had no idea how many lives would collapse if those files became public.""

"Children were stolen.""

"Children were placed.""

"Without their parents' consent.""

"Sometimes parents don't know what's best for their children.""

Darius stepped forward.

Grant raised the gun.

"Stop.""

Darius froze.

Grant continued, "Edward wanted to expose Martin. He didn't care that the company would collapse, that families would be ruined, that your sister would lose everything.""

"My sister lost her mother. I lost my father.""

"Your father made his choice.""

"And you made yours.""

For the first time, Grant looked uncertain.

Darius pressed.

"You replaced his medication. You used Naomi to deliver the coffee. You let everyone believe he died of a heart attack.""

Grant's jaw tightened.

"He had a weak heart.""

"That isn't an answer.""

Grant looked at Lucas.

"Your grandfather was going to tell you everything one day. He thought he could be forgiven. He thought blood mattered more than survival.""

Lucas lifted his head.

"You're talking about my grandfather?""

"Martin Hale was the only grandfather you ever knew.""

"No," Lucas said.

"Edward Cole was my grandfather, too.""

Grant's expression twisted.

"You don't understand what your family has done.""

"Then explain it.""

For a moment, the chapel was silent.

Then Grant lowered the gun slightly.

"Your grandmother knew about the children. Evelyn knew what Martin was doing. She helped him at first because she thought she could protect her own child.""

Darius stared at him.

"Which child?""

Grant looked directly at him.

"Grace.""

Darius felt the world tilt.

"You're saying my mother helped Martin take her own daughter?""

"She was seventeen when she had Grace. Her family forced her to give the baby up. Years later, when Evelyn discovered Martin had kept the original records, she begged Edward to help her find the girl.""

Grant smiled bitterly.

"Edward agreed. Then he discovered that Martin had used Grace's identity to conceal the movement of other children. He wanted to expose him. Evelyn begged him not to.""

"Why?""

"Because Grace had been placed with a family who loved her. Evelyn was afraid that exposing the truth would destroy her daughter's life.""

Darius shook his head.

"Then why did Martin keep her hidden?""

"Because Grace wasn't just Evelyn's daughter.""

Grant paused.

"She was the child whose identity connected every illegal adoption in the ledger. Martin used her birth record as the template for the false documents. If that original record surfaced, investigators could trace the entire operation.""

Darius glanced at the ledger.

"Then why does everyone want this book?""

"Because it contains the original birth record.""

Grant gestured toward the altar.

"Open it.""

Darius didn't move.

"You can take the ledger. Let Lucas walk out with me.""

Grant's face hardened.

"Open it!""

Darius slowly pulled the elastic band from the ledger.

Inside were pages of names, dates, and payments.

He flipped through them until he found the final section.

A sealed envelope was tucked into the binding.

Grant's eyes widened.

"Give it to me.""

Darius opened the envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The child's name was Grace Brooks.

Mother: Evelyn Brooks.

Father: Edward Cole.

Darius stared at the document.

His father had fathered Grace before marrying Evelyn.

She wasn't merely his mother's daughter.

She was his father's daughter, too.

His full sister.

Grant watched him with cold satisfaction.

"Now you understand. Your father spent his life hiding his own disgrace. He condemned Martin for the same thing he had done.""

Darius looked up.

"Did Edward know?""

"He knew Grace was his. He wanted to find her. He wanted to bring her home.""

"And you killed him to stop that.""

Grant's mouth tightened.

"He refused to listen.""

A voice came from the chapel entrance.

"That's enough.""

Evelyn stood in the doorway, flanked by Detective Harris and two officers.

Tanya was beside her, her face wet with tears.

Evelyn looked older than the woman in Darius's childhood photographs. Her hair had turned silver, and one hand trembled against the doorframe.

But her eyes were unmistakable.

Grant raised the gun.

"Stay back!""

Evelyn didn't move.

"You've done enough.""

"You don't get to judge me.""

"I've spent twenty years judging myself.""

She stepped into the chapel.

"I helped Martin because I was frightened. I believed if I cooperated, he'd let me see Grace. Instead, he used my fear to control me.""

Tanya stared at her.

"Why didn't you come home?""

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

"Because I was ashamed. Because I believed you would hate me. Because every year I waited made returning harder.""

Tanya's voice broke.

"You let us bury an empty coffin.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I know.""

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Evelyn looked at Grant.

"You didn't kill Edward because he was a threat. You killed him because he was going to tell Darius the truth about Grace.""

Grant's hand shook.

"Shut up.""

"You changed his medication. Naomi gave him the coffee because you lied to her. And when he collapsed, you took the original records.""

Grant pointed the gun at her.

"One more word.""

Evelyn took another step.

"Edward was still alive when you left him.""

Darius's breath caught.

"What?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"Your father didn't die at 9:42. That was when Grant called for help. Edward died later, alone, because Grant had ordered everyone to stay away until the records were gone.""

Grant's face contorted.

"She can't prove any of that!""

"No," Evelyn said.

"But I can.""

She reached into her coat and produced a small recorder.

"Edward left a second recording with me. It contains your confession, Grant. You told Martin what you'd done, and Martin recorded you because he intended to blackmail you.""

Grant lunged toward her.

Detective Harris shouted, "Drop the weapon!""

Grant swung the gun toward the officers.

A single shot exploded through the chapel.

Lucas threw himself to the floor.

Darius rushed forward, pulling his son behind a pew as officers tackled Grant to the ground.

The gun skidded across the stone floor.

Within seconds, Grant was handcuffed.

Darius knelt beside Lucas.

"Look at me. Are you hurt?""

Lucas shook his head, trembling.

"I'm okay.""

Darius wrapped both arms around him.

For the first time in sixteen years, he held his son without a wall of lies between them.

Then he heard Evelyn cry out.

She was on her knees beside the altar, clutching her side.

Blood spread across her coat.

Tanya rushed to her.

"Mom!""

Evelyn reached for her daughter's hand.

"Listen to me," she whispered.

"Grace is alive.""

Tanya bent closer.

"Where is she?""

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"She's closer than you think.""

Her gaze shifted toward Darius.

Then she whispered a name.

"Maya.""

Darius went still.

Before he could ask what she meant, Evelyn's eyes closed.

The officers called for an ambulance.

May you like

And Darius finally understood the truth he had been afraid to consider.

The child they had spent decades searching for might have been living under their roof all along.
