Chapter 1: The Ex She Called Broke

My ex-fiancée laughed when she saw me standing outside her wedding reception.

Six years earlier, she had left me because I was too poor to give her the life she wanted. Tonight, she was about to discover that the man she had abandoned had become the one person her family could not afford to offend.

“Marcus?”” Vanessa said, her eyes traveling from my shoes to my simple black suit.

“You actually came?””

She sounded genuinely amused.

Behind her, the ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers. White roses covered the tables. Champagne glasses caught the golden light, and a string quartet played softly beside a massive marble staircase.

Vanessa looked like she belonged in a magazine.

Her pearl-covered wedding gown probably cost more than my first apartment.

Daniel Reed, her new husband, stood beside her in an expensive navy tuxedo. His hand rested possessively against her waist.

I looked at the two of them.

“Congratulations,” I said.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“That’s it? Six years, and that's all you have to say?””

“I didn't realize you expected a speech.””

She laughed again.

Two women standing nearby exchanged amused glances.

“Honestly, Marcus,” Vanessa continued, “I thought you were still struggling somewhere. Did you come here because the food is free?””

Daniel shifted uncomfortably.

“Vanessa, maybe we should—”

“Oh, relax, Daniel. I'm just asking.””

She turned back to me.

“So, what do you do now? Still looking for investors? Still chasing that little technology idea?””

I remembered that tone.

I remembered hearing it in our apartment six years ago, when the electricity had been disconnected because I had used our last available money to pay a software developer.

Back then, Vanessa had packed her belongings while I sat at our kitchen table.

She had placed our engagement ring on top of my laptop.

“I can't spend my entire life waiting for you to become somebody,” she had told me.

I had asked her to give me one more year.

She had laughed.

“One year? Marcus, you don't even have a future.””

Then she walked away.

I never called her again.

Now, standing beneath the expensive lights of her wedding reception, I felt strangely little.

Not anger.

Not heartbreak.

Just distance.

“I work in technology,” I answered.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Still?””

Daniel cleared his throat.

“Vanessa, we should get inside. The guests are waiting.””

She ignored him.

“You know, I almost feel sorry for you,” she said.

“You could have had a normal life if you'd stopped dreaming about becoming some billionaire.””

I glanced at the envelope in my hand.

It was white, neatly sealed, with Daniel's name written across the front.

I had considered leaving it with the receptionist.

Perhaps I should have.

But I had made a promise to myself that I would never allow someone else's cruelty to dictate my decisions.

“I came to give you both a wedding present,” I said.

Vanessa looked at the envelope.

“That's sweet. Is it a gift card?””

One of the women nearby covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Daniel's expression tightened.

“Vanessa, that's enough.””

She looked at him in disbelief.

“What? I'm being polite.””

Before Daniel could answer, a man wearing a charcoal suit hurried toward us.

“Mr. Reed?””

Daniel immediately straightened.

“Yes?””

“The CEO has arrived. He's asking for you.””

Daniel's entire expression changed.

“The CEO? He's here?””

“Yes, sir. He's waiting near the main entrance.””

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

“Wait. You didn't tell me he was coming!””

“I didn't know he would make it.””

“Daniel, we need to meet him. Your promotion is still pending, remember?””

Daniel nodded.

“I know. I'll introduce you.””

He turned toward me.

“Marcus, I'm sorry. I need to attend to something important.””

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

“Of course. Some people have actual careers to worry about.””

Daniel took two steps, then stopped.

He looked at me again.

Something about my face seemed to register.

His eyebrows drew together.

Then he slowly turned around.

“Wait a minute.””

He looked at my suit, my face, and finally the small silver watch on my wrist.

“Mr. Carter?””

I nodded.

Daniel's mouth opened slightly.

“Good Lord. I didn't recognize you at first.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel stepped forward and extended his hand.

“Mr. Marcus Carter. CEO of Carter Global.””

The music continued inside the ballroom.

But at the entrance, everything went silent.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“CEO?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Carter Global is one of the largest private technology investment groups in the country. We manage several of the companies our firm depends on.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Marcus Carter is my company's biggest strategic investor.””

I handed Daniel the envelope.

“Congratulations on your wedding.””

His hand trembled slightly as he accepted it.

Vanessa stared at me.

“Marcus... you're the CEO?””

“I am.””

“Since when?””

“Since I stopped explaining my plans to people who had already decided I would fail.””

Her cheeks turned red.

She looked at Daniel, apparently waiting for him to laugh and reveal that this was some elaborate misunderstanding.

He didn't.

Instead, he examined the envelope.

His expression changed as he read the small print beneath my signature.

“What's this?”” he whispered.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel looked up.

“It's a formal notice from Carter Global.””

I nodded.

“There's a document inside concerning your father’s company.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“My father?””

Daniel slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single letter and a copy of a corporate agreement.

He read the first paragraph.

Then he read it again.

His face became almost colorless.

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Daniel, what does it say?””

He looked at me.

“Mr. Carter... is this real?””

I glanced toward the ballroom.

Then back at him.

“Your wedding gift is a little different from what you expected.””

Vanessa pulled the letter from his hands.

Her eyes moved across the page.

And then she whispered the question that changed everything.

“Why is my father's company listed as the subject of an acquisition termination?””

I didn't answer immediately.

May you like

Because the truth was that her father had been waiting six months for me to make a decision.

And tonight, I had finally made it.
