Chapter 4: The Groom's Hidden Signature

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The ballroom doors stood open behind us. Inside, hundreds of guests were waiting for the newlyweds to return. Outside, three people were discovering that their carefully constructed lives might have been built on the same lie.

Daniel stared at me.

“Are you accusing me of stealing money?””

“No,” I replied.

“I'm telling you what the documents suggest.””

Richard stepped between us.

“This is harassment. Daniel has done nothing wrong.””

I looked at him.

“Then he shouldn't have anything to worry about.””

Daniel loosened his bow tie.

“Can we please discuss this somewhere private?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Why are you acting like you have something to hide?””

“I don't.””

“Then answer him!””

Daniel glanced at the guests gathering near the entrance.

“Vanessa, not here.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Apparently, everything is happening somewhere it shouldn't happen. First, my father won't answer me. Now my husband won't answer me.””

Richard grabbed her elbow.

“Enough. You're embarrassing yourself.””

She pulled away.

“Stop telling me what to do!””

I watched the exchange without interrupting.

Six years ago, Vanessa had stood in front of me and said she couldn't spend her life defending a man who had no future.

Now she was standing between two men who had apparently spent years deciding what her future should look like.

And neither was willing to tell her the truth.

I took out my phone.

“Daniel, I'm going to ask you one question. You can answer it now, or your legal department can answer it tomorrow.””

He swallowed.

“What question?””

“Did you authorize a transfer of $1.8 million from Reed Holdings to a company called Northbridge Advisory?””

His face changed.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

“Daniel?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“That payment was part of a consulting arrangement.””

“Who authorized it?””

“I did.””

Richard closed his eyes.

I nodded slowly.

“And who owns Northbridge Advisory?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

That was answer enough.

Vanessa turned toward her father.

“Dad?””

Richard spoke quickly.

“It's a company used for legitimate business purposes.””

“Whose company?””

“Mine.””

The word seemed to strike Vanessa harder than any accusation.

She took a step backward.

“You own it?””

Richard adjusted his jacket.

“It's a subsidiary. There are complicated arrangements.””

“Did you use my husband's company to transfer money into your own account?””

“Don't be childish.””

“Answer me!””

Richard's expression hardened.

“You have no idea how much I sacrificed to build this family.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“I'm asking about money, Dad.””

“And I'm telling you that business is complicated.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Vanessa, I didn't steal anything. Your father asked me to process the transfer because the company was facing a liquidity crisis.””

I looked at him.

“Did you disclose your relationship with Richard when you approved it?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Did you disclose that you were marrying his daughter?””

Still nothing.

I continued.

“Because your company's compliance policy requires disclosure of related-party transactions.””

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

Vanessa slowly turned toward him.

“You knew?””

“Vanessa—”

“You knew my father was transferring money through your department?””

“I was trying to help him.””

“By risking your job?””

Daniel's voice rose.

“By protecting your family!””

She stared at him.

“My family?””

He looked toward Richard.

Richard looked away.

And suddenly, Vanessa understood that there were conversations happening around her that she had never been invited to hear.

A woman in an elegant blue dress approached us.

She was carrying a small leather folder.

“Mr. Carter?””

I recognized her immediately.

“Elizabeth. I thought you were still at the hotel.””

Elizabeth Shaw was Carter Global's general counsel.

“I received the compliance team's preliminary report. We have a problem.””

Richard stiffened.

“Who are you?””

“Elizabeth Shaw. General counsel for Carter Global.””

She opened her folder.

“Mr. Bennett, your company submitted a financial disclosure stating that no related-party payments had been made to Northbridge Advisory during the relevant reporting period.””

Richard's face became expressionless.

Elizabeth continued.

“Our records show three payments totaling $4.6 million.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Four point six million?””

Elizabeth nodded.

“Two payments were approved by Daniel Reed. The third was authorized using credentials belonging to a senior finance officer.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I only approved one.””

Elizabeth looked at him.

“Then we'll need to determine who used your access credentials for the other two.””

Richard suddenly stepped toward her.

“This is a private family matter.””

Elizabeth closed the folder.

“No, sir. It is a corporate compliance matter.””

I glanced at my watch.

“Elizabeth, prepare everything for tomorrow morning.””

“Already done.””

Daniel looked alarmed.

“What happens tomorrow?””

I answered calmly.

“An independent review begins. Your company will be notified. Carter Global will suspend all pending transactions until the review is complete.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Does that mean my father's company could collapse?””

“It means the truth will determine what happens next.””

Richard let out a bitter laugh.

“You think you're untouchable because you have money?””

“No. I think nobody should be untouchable.””

For a moment, Richard looked as though he wanted to strike me.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't a pleasant smile.

“You should be careful, Marcus. There are things about your company that you don't know.””

Elizabeth immediately looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Richard leaned closer to me.

“You think you built Carter Global alone? You think your success came entirely from your own work?””

I didn't move.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard reached inside his jacket and removed a small photograph.

He held it out.

It showed me six years younger, standing outside my first office with my former business partner, Ethan Cole.

I recognized the photograph immediately.

But what made my stomach tighten was the man standing behind us.

Richard Bennett.

He had never told me he had been there.

And beneath the photograph, someone had written a date.

Three days before my company lost its first major investor.

Richard leaned forward.

“Ask your old partner what really happened, Marcus.””

May you like

Then he walked toward the ballroom.

And for the first time in six years, I wondered whether the person who had betrayed me had never been Vanessa at all.
