Chapter 14: The Uncle Who Was Never Dead

I didn't believe Laura at first.

Not because I thought she was lying.

Because the idea was too enormous to accept.

My uncle Robert had supposedly been dead for sixteen years.

I remembered the funeral.

I remembered the black suit my mother had bought me.

I remembered standing beside the coffin while relatives told me how much my uncle had loved me.

And now Laura was telling me the coffin had never contained him.

“Where is he?”” I asked.

Laura shook her head.

“I don't know his exact location.””

“Then how do you know he's alive?””

“Because I saw him.””

“When?””

“Three weeks ago.””

Vanessa looked up.

“Where?””

“At Richard's estate.””

Laura explained that she had gone into Richard's private office looking for the original insurance records.

She had heard voices coming from a locked room.

One of the voices belonged to an older man.

When Richard opened the door, she saw him.

Robert Carter.

He was thinner, older, and using a walking stick.

But she recognized him immediately.

“Why was he there?”” I asked.

“Richard was keeping him hidden.””

I stared at her.

“For sixteen years?””

She nodded.

“Your uncle had something Richard needed.””

“What?””

“The original ownership certificate.””

I looked at Elizabeth.

She was already taking notes.

“Did you hear them discussing it?””

Laura nodded.

“Robert told Richard that the original certificate had been placed somewhere he could never reach.””

I leaned forward.

“Where?””

Laura closed her eyes.

“He said it belonged to Marcus.””

My throat tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at her mother.

“Mom, why would Dad keep Uncle Robert hidden?””

Laura hesitated.

“Because Robert was the only person who could prove the original insurance claim was fraudulent.””

I stood.

“Then we need to find him.””

Elizabeth immediately contacted the investigators.

They confirmed that the warehouse operation had recovered several documents linking Richard to the property where Laura had been held.

But the estate itself had already been emptied.

Richard was gone.

His private security team had disappeared.

And the property manager claimed he hadn't seen him in weeks.

Daniel, who had been waiting outside the hospital room, entered.

“I may know where Robert is.””

I turned toward him.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“Richard used to make payments to a rehabilitation center in the north. The expenses were listed under a company called Bennett Care Services.””

Elizabeth checked the records.

“Was anyone registered under Robert Carter?””

Daniel nodded.

“I saw the name once.””

We immediately gave the information to the police.

Two hours later, an investigator called.

They had located a man registered under a different name at a private rehabilitation facility.

The photograph matched my uncle.

I felt my hands begin to shake.

“Is he alive?””

“Yes, Mr. Carter. He's alive.””

“Can we see him?””

“The facility is cooperating. We'll arrange a controlled visit.””

The next morning, I stood outside a quiet room at the rehabilitation center.

A nurse opened the door.

Inside, an elderly man sat beside the window.

He was wearing a gray sweater.

His hair was almost completely white.

But when he turned toward me, I recognized his eyes.

“Marcus?””

I couldn't move.

He smiled weakly.

“My boy.””

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I walked into the room.

“Uncle Robert.””

He reached for my hand.

I didn't take it.

“Why?””

His smile disappeared.

I looked at him.

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””

He lowered his head.

“Because I was a coward.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone in this family seems to have the same excuse.””

He looked out the window.

“Your father and I built the original company together. But Thomas was always the visionary. I handled the financial side.””

“Then why did you betray him?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Richard offered me money. He promised that if I transferred my access rights, we would both become wealthy.””

“You stole the technology.””

“Yes.””

“You helped him forge the patent.””

“Yes.””

“You allowed him to destroy my father's company.””

Robert began crying.

“Yes.””

I stood motionless.

“Did you know he was going to hurt my father?””

Robert looked up.

“I didn't know he would die.””

“But you knew Richard was threatening him.””

He nodded.

“Thomas wanted to expose everything. He came to me for help. I refused.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I had already accepted Richard's money.””

I turned away.

Robert continued.

“After Thomas died, I tried to withdraw from the arrangement. Richard wouldn't let me. He told me he had enough evidence to send me to prison.””

“So he faked your death?””

“He arranged it. He paid someone to create a false medical record and used another man's body for the burial.””

I stared at him.

“And you agreed?””

“I thought I would be safe if I disappeared.””

“Safe?””

My voice rose.

“My mother spent years believing she had lost her husband and his brother. I grew up thinking you were dead. You watched us struggle while you were alive!””

Robert began sobbing.

“I know.””

“You could have helped us!””

“I was afraid.””

I stepped closer.

“My mother died believing she had failed to protect me.””

Robert covered his face.

“I'm sorry.””

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me already did.

But another part remembered the man who had taught me to ride a bicycle, helped me with mathematics, and carried me on his shoulders when I was a child.

I sat down.

“Where is the original ownership certificate?””

Robert looked at me.

“Your father gave it to me before he died.””

“Where is it?””

“Inside the original Carter family watch.””

I frowned.

“What watch?””

Robert smiled sadly.

“Your father's gold pocket watch. The one your mother kept in her jewelry box.””

I stared at him.

My mother had given me that watch on my thirtieth birthday.

I had it locked inside a safe at my home.

Robert continued.

“Your father removed the inner mechanism and placed the ownership certificate inside a hidden compartment. He told me that if anything happened to him, I should give it to you.””

“Why didn't you?””

“Richard found out. He threatened to kill you if I ever revealed where it was.””

I looked down.

“Did you believe him?””

Robert nodded.

I stood.

“Then you should have found another way.””

He began crying again.

Before I could leave, he grabbed my sleeve.

“Marcus, there's something else.””

I stopped.

“Richard has a copy of the certificate.””

“How?””

“Because I gave it to him.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Before I disappeared.””

I stared at him.

“Then why does he need mine?””

Robert swallowed.

“Because mine is incomplete.””

He reached into his bedside drawer and removed a folded paper.

It was a photograph of the original certificate.

At the bottom was a line I hadn't seen before.

*Final ownership authority: Thomas Carter's lawful heir.*

My name appeared beneath it.

I looked up.

Robert nodded.

“Your father made sure Richard could never own the technology without your approval.””

Suddenly, my phone rang.

It was Elizabeth.

“Marcus, you need to come to the office immediately.””

“What happened?””

“Richard has issued a public statement.””

“About what?””

“He's accusing you of stealing the original technology from Bennett Systems.””

I closed my eyes.

“What evidence does he have?””

Elizabeth hesitated.

“Apparently, he's produced a signed agreement from your father.””

I looked at Robert.

He was staring at the floor.

Then Elizabeth added:

“There's something else. Richard has announced a press conference tomorrow morning. He's claiming that Carter Global's ownership is fraudulent and that he intends to take control of the company through the courts.””

I ended the call.

Robert looked at me.

“I'm sorry, Marcus.””

I picked up my jacket.

“Don't apologize yet.””

I looked at the man who had betrayed my father, abandoned my mother, and stolen sixteen years from our family.

“Tomorrow, we're going to tell the truth.””

May you like

And for the first time, Robert nodded.

“Then I'll testify.””
