Chapter 2: The Wedding Gift
Vanessa read the letter three times.
Each time, her fingers tightened around the paper.
“This is impossible,” she finally said.
Daniel looked toward me.
“Mr. Carter, could we speak privately?””
Vanessa snapped her head toward him.
“Privately? About what?””
“Vanessa, please.””
“No. This concerns my father. I want to know what is happening.””
I slipped my hands into my pockets.
“Your father owns Reed Holdings, correct?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
“Carter Global has been negotiating with Reed Holdings for the past six months.””
Her mouth opened.
“Negotiating?””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
He clearly knew something she didn't.
I continued.
“Your father's company approached us after losing two major contracts. They needed an investment partner to stabilize their operations and refinance several outstanding obligations.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“My father told me his business was doing extremely well.””
I almost smiled.
“Perhaps he didn't want to worry you.””
Daniel looked down at the letter again.
“What exactly has been terminated?””
“The proposed acquisition agreement.””
Vanessa blinked.
“Wait. You were going to buy my father's company?””
“Possibly.””
“And now you're not?””
“That's correct.””
Her voice rose.
“Because I insulted you?””
“No.””
I paused.
“Because the information uncovered during due diligence was unacceptable.””
Daniel's face became even more serious.
“What information?””
I looked at him.
“Your employer's finance department has been involved in the review. You should already know some of the concerns.””
Daniel hesitated.
“I know there were questions about certain financial disclosures.””
“Questions?””
I took a breath.
“Your father submitted financial statements that did not accurately reflect the company's liabilities. Several properties were listed as unencumbered when they were already pledged against outstanding loans.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“My father would never do that.””
I didn't argue.
I had learned that people often defended their families before they understood what those families had done.
Instead, I reached into my jacket and handed Daniel another document.
“Your company's legal department has the full report. This is the summary.””
Daniel scanned the first page.
His eyes stopped at a particular section.
“Three undisclosed loans?””
“More than three,” I replied.
“Those are the ones confirmed so far.””
Vanessa snatched the paper.
“You're making this up!””
A few guests began turning toward us.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Vanessa, please don't make a scene.””
She looked at him as if he had betrayed her.
“Whose side are you on?””
“I'm trying to understand what's happening.””
“You're supposed to be my husband!””
The word husband landed strangely.
They had been married for less than two hours.
And already, their wedding celebration had become a business meeting neither of them wanted.
I glanced at my watch.
“I should leave.””
Vanessa stepped in front of me.
“No. You're not going anywhere.””
I raised an eyebrow.
“Excuse me?””
“You come to my wedding, humiliate me in front of everyone, and then tell me my father's company is falling apart?””
“I haven't humiliated you, Vanessa.””
“You know exactly what you're doing!””
I looked at the guests watching us.
“Six years ago, you told me I would never become anything. Tonight, I came here without mentioning my success once. You were the one who decided to make my financial situation the entertainment.””
Her lips trembled.
“I didn't know.””
“That was never a requirement for treating someone with respect.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Mr. Carter, I apologize for the way Vanessa has spoken to you.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Daniel!””
He ignored her.
“Please. I know this isn't the place to discuss business, but Reed Holdings employs more than four hundred people. If the acquisition is terminated, there could be serious consequences.””
I studied him.
For the first time that evening, he sounded sincere.
“That's exactly why I didn't make this decision casually.””
“What would it take to reconsider?””
“Nothing tonight.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Understood.””
I turned toward the entrance.
Then a familiar voice came from behind us.
“Marcus?””
I stopped.
Vanessa's father stood near the ballroom doors.
Richard Bennett was in his late sixties, with silver hair, a tailored tuxedo, and the kind of confident smile that had always made people assume he was richer than he actually was.
He had aged.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
He approached quickly.
“I heard there was some confusion.””
He glanced at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
His smile faded.
“Mr. Carter. I wasn't expecting to see you here.””
“I wasn't expecting to be part of the evening's entertainment either.””
Richard looked at the letter in Vanessa's hand.
“What is that?””
Vanessa rushed toward him.
“Dad, Marcus says he's canceling the acquisition of Reed Holdings!””
Richard froze.
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Then he looked directly at me.
“Marcus, perhaps we can discuss this privately.””
“There's nothing private about a signed corporate decision.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“You're making a mistake.””
“Perhaps.””
“You don't understand the full situation.””
“Then explain it.””
He glanced around nervously.
Guests were watching now. Even the quartet had stopped playing.
Richard stepped closer.
“Not here.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Your daughter seems to believe I'm responsible for your company's problems.””
Richard's face hardened.
“Vanessa doesn't understand business.””
“Neither did I, apparently, when I was twenty-eight and asking her to believe in me.””
For the first time, Richard looked genuinely uncomfortable.
Vanessa stared at her father.
“What is he talking about?””
Richard ignored her.
“Marcus, I know we had disagreements years ago, but that has nothing to do with this transaction.””
I slowly tilted my head.
“Are you sure?””
He went silent.
I reached into my jacket and removed a final document.
“There's one more issue.””
Richard stared at it.
“What now?””
I placed it on the small table beside the entrance.
“An audit identified a payment made by Reed Holdings six years ago to a private consulting company.””
Richard's expression changed.
Vanessa looked between us.
“Dad?””
I continued.
“The payment was approximately two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””
Richard's voice dropped.
“Where did you get that information?””
“From your own accounting records.””
His face turned pale.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Do you remember the day you left me?””
She swallowed.
“Of course I remember.””
“Do you remember telling me that my business idea would never work?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What does that have to do with this?””
I turned the document around.
The name of the consulting company was printed clearly at the top.
Bennett Strategic Solutions.
Vanessa stared.
“That was one of Dad's companies.””
“Yes.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Marcus, stop.””
But I wasn't finished.
“Six years ago, someone paid a consultant to obtain confidential information about my startup. The information included our technology, our investor list, and our development strategy.””
Vanessa slowly looked at her father.
“Dad... what is he saying?””
Richard didn't answer.
I looked directly at him.
“I'm saying your company didn't just compete against mine.””
May you like
I paused.
“It tried to destroy it before it had a chance to exist.””
