Chapter 11: The Second Partner

“Who was it?”” I demanded.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“Her grandfather.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“My grandfather died before I was born.””

“I'm talking about your mother's father. Not Richard's.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“My mother's father was never involved in business.””

Eleanor had been listening quietly.

Now she stood.

“That's not true.””

Vanessa turned toward her grandmother.

“What?””

Eleanor's expression was filled with an old sadness.

“Your grandfather, Edward Reed, helped finance Thomas's original research. He was a silent partner in the first development company.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Why wasn't that in the shareholder records?””

“Because Richard wanted it hidden.””

Ethan explained that Edward Reed had provided the initial funding for my father's research. In exchange, he received a minority ownership interest in the original technology.

Richard had later convinced Edward to transfer his shares.

But Edward had refused.

“He threatened to expose Richard,” Ethan said.

“Then he died unexpectedly.””

Vanessa looked sick.

“My grandfather died of a heart attack.””

Eleanor nodded.

“That's what the official report said.””

“Was it true?””

“I don't know, darling.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Ethan, stop speaking in riddles. What does this have to do with the ownership key?””

He removed a small flash drive from his pocket.

“Your father divided the original source code into two encrypted sections. One remained in the company archive. The other was stored separately.””

“And you have the second section?””

“I have the access key.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because your mother asked me to preserve it.””

I laughed.

“You stole my company and somehow expect me to believe my mother trusted you?””

Ethan looked down.

“I know how it sounds.””

“How it sounds? You destroyed six years of my life!””

“I know.””

“You let me believe I had failed because I wasn't good enough.””

His voice became quieter.

“I know.””

“Then explain yourself.””

Ethan sat on the low stone bench beside my father's grave.

“Richard offered me money to obtain your original files. I agreed. I thought it would be a simple transaction. I would take the money, leave your company, and start somewhere else.””

He paused.

“But after I copied the files, I discovered Richard intended to claim the entire technology as his own.””

I said nothing.

“He didn't want to license it. He wanted to erase Thomas Carter's ownership completely.””

“And you helped him.””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Then your mother contacted me. She had found the original licensing documents and realized Richard was using the stolen source code to build a competing system.””

“Why would she trust you?””

“She didn't. She gave me one chance to make things right.””

I looked at the flash drive.

“What did you do?””

“I copied the original ownership key and hid it. I also sent her the financial records proving Richard's payments.””

Elizabeth stepped forward.

“Where are the original records?””

Ethan shook his head.

“Some are with me. Others are in a storage facility Richard doesn't know about.””

I studied him.

“Why come forward now?””

“Because Richard is planning to destroy the evidence. And because he knows I still have the key.””

Samuel looked up.

“Then why did you tell him you had it?””

Ethan turned toward him.

“Because I wanted him to believe I was cooperating.””

Elizabeth immediately asked, “Did Richard contact you tonight?””

Ethan nodded.

“He wants me at his office at nine tomorrow morning.””

“Why?””

“He says he has a buyer for the remaining intellectual property.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Ethan looked at me.

“An overseas investment consortium.””

Elizabeth's expression changed.

“Do you have the name?””

“Not yet.””

She immediately took out her phone.

“We need to notify the relevant authorities and secure the original records.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You're too late if you wait for paperwork. Richard already has access to the archive.””

I turned toward Elizabeth.

“Can we lock him out?””

“Carter Global's archive, yes. But the old Bennett Systems records are outside our control.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Where is the storage facility?””

He hesitated.

Then he gave us an address.

It was an industrial storage complex outside the city.

Elizabeth arranged for legal counsel and security to meet us there.

Before we left, Vanessa approached Ethan.

“Did you know my father was manipulating me?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Did you know he lied about Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know I received money?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I never saw you receive anything.””

“But you knew my name was used.””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Richard said you would never believe me.””

She let out a bitter laugh.

“He was right.””

Ethan lowered his head.

I watched Vanessa turn away.

For the first time, I understood that she wasn't simply dealing with the consequences of her father's actions.

She was grieving the family she thought she had.

And no amount of money could make that easier.

An hour later, we arrived at the storage facility.

The building was surrounded by concrete walls and security cameras.

Ethan entered a code at the front desk.

The manager checked his identification.

Then he led us to unit 214.

Inside were several metal filing cabinets, two old computers, and a large fireproof safe.

Ethan approached the safe.

“Everything important is inside.””

Elizabeth examined the locks.

“Do you have the combination?””

Ethan nodded.

He entered six numbers.

The safe opened.

Inside were several envelopes, two external drives, and a thick black folder.

I picked up the folder.

The first page was a signed agreement between Thomas Carter, Edward Reed, and Eleanor Reed.

It established the original ownership structure.

My father's estate retained sixty percent of the intellectual property.

Edward Reed held twenty percent.

Eleanor held twenty percent.

Richard Bennett had never been an owner.

Not even a minority shareholder.

I stared at the document.

“Richard never owned any of this.””

“Not legally,” Ethan said.

I turned the page.

There was another agreement.

This one transferred Richard's company shares to a new entity.

The signature belonged to Edward Reed.

But something was wrong.

The transfer date was six months after Edward's death.

Elizabeth examined it.

“This document is fraudulent.””

Ethan nodded.

“That's what I told Richard.””

I looked at him.

“And he did what?””

“He threatened me.””

The next document was even more disturbing.

It was a list of payments made to various individuals involved in the original company.

One payment was made to a police investigator.

Another to a medical examiner.

And another to an unidentified private contractor.

The dates were clustered around the time of my father's death.

My hands began to shake.

“Elizabeth.””

She read the entries.

Her expression turned grave.

“This needs to go directly to the authorities.””

I continued reading.

Then I saw a familiar name.

Samuel Price.

He had received $120,000 from Richard's company three days after my father's funeral.

I turned toward him.

“Is this why you helped Richard?””

Samuel looked devastated.

“I was paid to amend the estate records. I didn't know about the other payments.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“That's what everyone says.””

Samuel began crying.

“I was young. I had a family. Richard told me the money was legitimate.””

I looked at the document.

“You helped him steal my inheritance.””

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.””

I stepped away.

I couldn't look at him anymore.

Elizabeth photographed every page and contacted outside counsel.

Then she examined the second external drive.

It contained a file labeled:

*THOMAS CARTER — FINAL STATEMENT.*

I opened it.

A video appeared.

My father was sitting at a desk, looking tired.

He was wearing the blue shirt I remembered from my childhood.

I stopped breathing.

“Marcus,” he said.

My eyes filled instantly.

“If you're watching this, it means I wasn't able to protect you from what is coming.””

I leaned toward the screen.

My father continued.

“There's something you need to understand. Richard Bennett is not the person who started this. He's only the person who wants to finish it.””

I felt cold.

He looked directly into the camera.

“The original technology was developed through a partnership. And one of the partners betrayed us long before Richard ever entered the picture.””

The video paused briefly.

Then my father said the name.

“Your uncle, Robert Carter.””

I stood frozen.

My uncle Robert had died when I was nineteen.

He had been my father's older brother.

The man who attended every birthday, every school event, and every family gathering.

The man who had helped raise me after my father died.

I looked at Elizabeth.

She was staring at the screen.

Then another file appeared automatically.

A scanned photograph.

My father.

Richard Bennett.

Ethan Cole.

And my uncle Robert.

All standing together.

On the back was a handwritten note.

The first betrayal came from blood.
