Chapter 13: The Woman Richard Tried to Silence
I stared at the photograph for nearly a minute.
Laura Bennett was sitting in a car with her hands tied. Her face was bruised, and there was a strip of tape across her mouth.
Richard stood behind her.
The caption beneath the image was simple.
Come alone if you want to know what happened to your mother.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Marcus, what's happened?””
I showed her the photograph.
Her face drained of color.
“That's my mother.””
Elizabeth immediately took my phone.
“Nobody is going anywhere alone. This is a kidnapping threat.””
She contacted the police and our security director.
Within minutes, the photograph had been forwarded to the appropriate authorities. The security team began analyzing the available image details while Elizabeth arranged for the original message to be preserved.
I paced across the storage unit.
“Richard knows we've found the documents. He knows Laura has contacted me.””
Elizabeth looked up.
“Which means we have to assume he knows about the investigation.””
Vanessa was crying.
“Please. We have to find her.””
I stopped walking.
“We will.””
Daniel approached quietly.
“Marcus, there's something I need to tell you.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at Vanessa before speaking.
“Richard has a private property outside the city. It's an old industrial estate he uses for confidential meetings.””
Elizabeth immediately asked, “Address?””
Daniel gave it to her.
“It's not listed under his name. It's owned by a company called RB Strategic Properties.””
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I processed the property expenses.””
Elizabeth checked the company records.
The address matched the location of a warehouse connected to one of Richard's shell companies.
The police were notified.
But there was another problem.
The latest message included a second photograph.
This one showed Laura holding a newspaper with the current date visible.
She was alive.
At least, she had been recently.
Then another message arrived.
You have one hour.
I felt my jaw tighten.
Elizabeth took the phone.
“That's enough. We're not negotiating with him.””
Vanessa approached me.
“Marcus, I need to go.””
“No.””
“She is my mother.””
“And Richard wants you there.””
“I don't care!””
I held her shoulders.
“That's exactly what he wants. He knows you'll come running if he threatens someone you love.””
She started crying.
“I can't lose her.””
I looked into her eyes.
“Then don't let him use your fear against you.””
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she nodded.
The police arrived twenty-five minutes later.
They organized a controlled response with our security team providing the warehouse information and the relevant photographs.
I wanted to be at the front.
The lead officer refused.
“Mr. Carter, your involvement could compromise the operation.””
“I have information he may need.””
“You can provide it from here.””
I hated every second of waiting.
At 4:17 p.m., my phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
I answered.
“Marcus?””
Laura's voice.
“Laura, where are you?””
“Don't come here.””
“Are you safe?””
She began crying.
“Listen to me. Richard has been lying about your mother.””
“I know.””
“No, Marcus. You don't.””
I closed my eyes.
“What happened?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Your mother didn't die because of her illness alone.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“Richard was giving her information that caused her to believe she had no legal claim to your father's estate. He also had access to some of her medical records.””
I looked at Elizabeth.
She immediately began recording the conversation through the approved legal process.
Laura continued.
“Your mother discovered that the insurance payment had been redirected. She also found the original patent agreement. She confronted Richard.””
“When?””
“Four months before she died.””
I swallowed.
“What did he do?””
“He threatened her. He told her that if she continued investigating, he would destroy everything she had left.””
“Did he hurt her?””
Laura began sobbing.
“I don't know whether he caused her death directly. But I know he arranged for her to receive false information about her treatment and interfered with her access to independent medical advice.””
My knees felt weak.
“What?””
“He wanted her to stop fighting. He wanted her too frightened and exhausted to challenge him.””
I couldn't speak.
Laura continued.
“Your mother kept asking me to help her. I was afraid of Richard. I was afraid of losing Vanessa. I did nothing.””
Vanessa was standing beside me.
She heard every word.
“Mom?””
There was a pause.
“Vanessa?””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Laura began crying harder.
“Because I was a coward.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Was Dad responsible for Grandma being kept away from us too?””
“Yes.””
“Was he responsible for everything?””
Laura hesitated.
“Not everything.””
Then she whispered:
“Your father arranged for Robert Carter to disappear before Thomas died.””
I frowned.
“Robert?””
Laura explained that Richard had discovered Robert's involvement in the original technology theft.
But Robert hadn't died sixteen years ago.
He had disappeared.
Someone had used his identity to create a false death record, and Richard had been using that identity to control the original insurance trust.
The man buried under Robert's name was someone else.
I felt the room tilt.
“Where is my uncle?””
Laura's answer was barely audible.
“Richard knows.””
Suddenly, a crash sounded through the phone.
Laura screamed.
Then the call ended.
Elizabeth immediately looked at the police officers.
“They may be moving her.””
The lead officer received a radio update.
The warehouse operation had begun.
Minutes passed.
Then the officer's radio crackled.
“Female victim located. Alive. Medical assistance required.””
Vanessa burst into tears.
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in years, someone had escaped Richard's control.
But we weren't finished.
An hour later, Laura was taken to a hospital under police protection.
Vanessa and I went to see her.
She was lying in a hospital bed with a bandage above her eyebrow.
When she saw Vanessa, she began crying.
“My baby.””
Vanessa approached slowly.
“Mom.””
They embraced.
I stayed near the doorway.
Laura eventually looked at me.
“Marcus, I'm sorry.””
I nodded.
“You don't have to apologize to me right now.””
She shook her head.
“No. I do.””
She reached beneath her pillow and removed a small envelope.
“Richard gave me this years ago. He said it was proof that your father had agreed to transfer the technology.””
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten statement.
It contained my father's signature.
But unlike the other documents, this one included a second signature.
Robert Carter.
I looked at Laura.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Richard's private office.””
“Why are you giving it to me now?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Because I finally understand what he was trying to hide.””
I examined the document.
The transfer was dated three days before my father's death.
But there was something wrong.
The signature wasn't my father's.
It was a forgery.
And beneath the signatures was a handwritten note.
Original agreement destroyed. Witness eliminated.
I looked up.
“Who wrote this?””
Laura's face went pale.
“Richard.””
Before I could ask another question, she grabbed my wrist.
“Marcus, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
She looked toward the hospital door.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“Robert Carter is alive.””
