Chapter 12: Blood Was Never Innocent
I watched my father's video again.
Then a third time.
Each time, the same sentence stayed with me.
The first betrayal came from blood.
My uncle Robert had been dead for sixteen years.
He had attended my graduation.
He had helped my mother repair the house after my father died.
He had given me my first computer.
And apparently, he had been involved in the betrayal that destroyed my father's company.
I couldn't make the pieces fit.
“Marcus?””
Elizabeth stood beside me.
“Are you all right?””
“No.””
I looked at the screen.
“My uncle raised me.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“No, you don't.””
My voice cracked.
“He was the person I called when I couldn't afford tuition. He helped me get my first job. He sat beside my mother at every hospital appointment.””
I stopped.
Then I looked at the photograph.
“Why would he do this?””
Ethan spoke quietly.
“Because he believed your father was making a mistake.””
I turned toward him.
“What mistake?””
“Your father wanted to keep the technology in the family. Robert believed it should belong to whoever could commercialize it.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't explain theft.””
“No. But it explains how Richard got access to the original files.””
Ethan opened another folder.
Inside was an old partnership agreement.
Robert Carter's name appeared as a technical adviser.
But unlike my father, Robert had signed a separate confidentiality agreement.
The document included a clause allowing him access to the original development archives.
Elizabeth examined the signatures.
“Robert had legitimate access.””
“Until he copied everything,” Ethan said.
I stared at him.
“Did you know?””
“I discovered it later.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Richard was using Robert's original transfer documents to claim ownership.””
I walked away from the table.
The storage unit suddenly felt too small.
My father had died believing his brother had betrayed him.
My mother had spent years protecting me from the truth.
And I had built an entire company using technology that might have been stolen twice before it reached me.
I looked at Elizabeth.
“Can we establish the actual chain of ownership?””
“Yes, but we'll need the original contracts, patent filings, and technical records. The documents here give us a strong starting point.””
“Then do it.””
She nodded.
Vanessa approached me.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
She looked exhausted.
“I know this is going to sound terrible, but I think I know why my father wanted your company.””
I waited.
“My father told me something when I was younger. He said Richard had once promised my grandfather that he would make our family the most powerful business family in the country.””
“And?””
“He said the promise was connected to a secret agreement.””
She took a breath.
“He also said that if the original technology ever became valuable, the person who controlled it would control the entire company.””
Ethan nodded.
“That's exactly what Richard wanted.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then why did he arrange my marriage to Daniel?””
Nobody answered.
She continued.
“My father introduced us. He encouraged the relationship. He even offered to pay for the wedding.””
Daniel had been quiet for several minutes.
Now he looked up.
“Vanessa, your father didn't arrange our marriage.””
She stared at him.
“What?””
“I met you independently.””
“You told me your father introduced us at the charity dinner.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“He invited me to the dinner. But I didn't know you would be there.””
Vanessa slowly sat down.
“Then why did he encourage us?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Because he knew my company had a relationship with Carter Global. He wanted someone inside the company who could influence the acquisition process.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“So you were part of his plan?””
“No. I was never told the full story.””
“But you knew he wanted the acquisition.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you married me anyway.””
Daniel looked down.
“I loved you.””
She laughed through her tears.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you sign documents using my name?””
He had no answer.
I turned toward him.
“Daniel, there's something else you need to understand. The transaction records show that money moved through accounts connected to your credentials. If you were involved, you need to tell the truth now.””
Daniel took a long breath.
“I approved the first transfer because Richard said it was an emergency loan.””
“And the others?””
“I didn't approve them.””
“Your credentials were used.””
“I know.””
“Who had access?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said, “My executive assistant.””
Elizabeth immediately looked up.
“Name?””
“Lauren Mitchell.””
I frowned.
“Does she work for Richard?””
“No. She works for me.””
“Where is she now?””
Daniel checked his phone.
“She's supposed to be at the office.””
Elizabeth shook her head.
“Call her.””
Daniel dialed.
The call went straight to voicemail.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Then he opened his email.
A new message had arrived.
The subject line read:
*RESIGNATION — EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.*
Daniel stared at it.
“She's resigned.””
Elizabeth leaned over his shoulder.
“Open the attachment.””
It contained a signed resignation letter.
At the bottom was a short statement.
I am leaving to avoid being implicated in activities conducted under the direction of senior management.
Daniel looked at me.
“Senior management?””
I nodded.
“Someone is trying to shift the blame.””
His phone vibrated again.
This time, a text message appeared.
It was from Lauren.
I'm sorry, Daniel. I did what I was told. Your father-in-law has the originals.
Daniel frowned.
“My father-in-law?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Richard?””
He nodded.
A second message arrived.
Ask him what happened to the money from the original insurance policy. He knows where it went.
I looked at Elizabeth.
“The two million dollars?””
She nodded slowly.
“That's what it appears to be.””
Daniel suddenly stood.
“I need to speak to Richard.””
I stepped in front of him.
“Not without legal counsel.””
“He's destroying my life!””
“He's been destroying other people's lives for years. Don't give him another opportunity to manipulate you.””
Daniel looked furious.
Then his anger collapsed.
“Marcus, I made a terrible mistake.””
“Yes.””
“I thought I was helping Vanessa's family.””
“You helped Richard.””
He lowered his head.
“I know.””
Vanessa walked toward him.
“Daniel, did you marry me because of my father?””
He looked at her.
“No.””
“Did you ever intend to use me to gain control of Carter Global?””
“No.””
“Then why did you let him use my name?””
Daniel struggled to answer.
Finally, he whispered, “Because I was afraid of losing my position.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“That isn't love.””
She turned away.
I didn't intervene.
Their marriage was their responsibility, not mine.
Elizabeth's phone rang.
She answered, listened for several seconds, and then looked at me.
“Marcus, the bank has confirmed something.””
“What?””
“The two-million-dollar insurance payment was transferred into a private trust. The account was closed four years ago.””
“Who closed it?””
Elizabeth looked at the report.
“Robert Carter.””
I stared at her.
“That isn't possible. He died sixteen years ago.””
“Exactly.””
She turned the laptop toward me.
The transaction had been authorized using an identity credential that should have been inactive.
But the account had been accessed only three weeks ago.
Someone was still using my uncle's identity.
I leaned closer.
The withdrawal destination was listed beneath the transaction.
A private bank account.
The beneficiary was a woman named Laura Bennett.
Richard's wife.
Vanessa's mother.
I looked at her.
“Is your mother alive?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
“She lives with my father.””
Elizabeth opened another document.
“Marcus, there's something else. The account was accessed from a residential address registered to Richard Bennett.””
I stared at the screen.
The money that had supposedly disappeared sixteen years ago was still moving.
And someone had been controlling it all along.
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
“Marcus Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Laura Bennett.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“Mom?””
Laura continued.
“I know what you've discovered. I know about the recordings, the ownership documents, and the money.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was a long silence.
Then Laura whispered:
“Because Richard is preparing to blame everything on your uncle, and I have the evidence proving your father was murdered.””
The room went completely still.
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I can't tell you that.””
“Why not?””
“Because Richard is listening.””
Then I heard a door slam.
A man's voice shouted in the background.
Laura began speaking rapidly.
“Marcus, listen carefully. Your father wasn't the only person Richard wanted dead.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who else?””
She whispered four words.
“Your mother was next.””
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
For four years, I had believed my mother died peacefully in a hospital bed.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether her final illness had been as natural as everyone had told me.
And the person who might finally explain everything was the wife of the man who had destroyed my family.
But before I could call back, a message appeared on my screen.
It contained a photograph.
Laura Bennett was sitting in the driver's seat of a car.
Her hands were tied.
And behind her, visible through the rear window, stood Richard Bennett.

The caption contained only one sentence.
*Come alone if you want to know what happened to your mother.*
