Chapter 10: The Escape Behind the Stage

The lights disappeared.

For one terrifying second, nobody existed except shadows.

The room filled with sounds.

A chair scraping.

Someone breathing heavily.

A sharp gasp.

Then my own voice.

“Dad?””

A hand grabbed my wrist.

I froze.

“Maya, it’s me.””

Daniel.

I almost collapsed from relief.

“I’m here,” he whispered.

Across the darkness, someone cursed.

Adrian.

“Find the card.””

His voice was calm.

That scared me more than anger.

Anger meant someone lost control.

Adrian sounded like he had never lost control in his life.

A small emergency light flickered on near the floor.

Enough to see faces.

Marcus stood between us and Adrian.

Vanessa was pressed against the wall.

And Adrian was smiling.

“You all really thought you could run?””

Marcus looked toward the maintenance door.

“Now.””

We moved.

Daniel pulled me toward the small door behind the stage equipment.

Marcus followed.

But before Vanessa could move, Adrian grabbed her arm.

She screamed.

“Let go!””

For the first time, I heard Vanessa sound helpless.

Not powerful.

Not controlling.

Helpless.

Daniel stopped.

My father looked back.

“Maya, go.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I’m not leaving anyone.””

The words surprised me.

Even after everything.

Even after Vanessa hurt me.

Even after learning she lied.

I couldn’t watch someone get taken away.

Marcus looked at me.

And something in his expression changed.

Pride.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.””

Adrian laughed.

“That’s exactly the problem.””

He pulled Vanessa closer.

“She always thought she could save everyone.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Adrian, please.””

The word shocked me.

Please.

Vanessa never begged.

Not anyone.

Adrian leaned closer.

“You had one job.””

“I protected you.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You protected yourself.””

Vanessa looked like she finally understood.

The person she had spent years protecting had never cared about her.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

Adrian looked amused.

“You’re still trying to be the hero.””

“No.””

My father’s voice was steady.

“I’m trying to be the man I should have been years ago.””

Adrian stared at him.

Then smiled.

“That’s sweet.””

He pushed Vanessa aside.

She fell against the wall.

Adrian moved toward us.

Marcus stepped forward.

But Daniel stopped him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel took a breath.

“This ends with me.””

I stared at my father.

He looked scared.

But he didn’t move back.

Adrian tilted his head.

“You think courage changes anything?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at the memory card.

“But truth does.””

A second passed.

Then Marcus grabbed the emergency handle.

The maintenance door opened.

“Now!””

We ran.

The hallway behind the stage was narrow and dark.

My graduation gown dragged behind me.

The medal bounced against my chest.

Every step reminded me of my mother.

Of everything she left behind.

Of everything she wanted me to find.

We reached a small storage area.

Marcus shut the door.

Daniel pushed a shelf in front of it.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Only breathing.

Only fear.

Then Vanessa appeared.

I froze.

“How did you get out?””

She leaned against the wall.

Her face was pale.

“I ran.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew what to do with her.

She looked at Daniel.

“I’m sorry.””

He stared at her.

“I don’t know if that’s enough.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

That was the first honest thing I had ever heard from her.

Marcus looked at the memory card.

“We need to get this somewhere safe.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“We don’t run anymore.””

Marcus studied him.

“Daniel.””

“I spent twenty years running from questions because I was afraid of the answers.””

He looked at me.

“I’m done.””

A sound came from outside.

Adrian was searching.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“The card isn’t the only evidence.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He reached into his coat.

And pulled out a small envelope.

My heart stopped.

“What is that?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Something your mother gave me.””

Daniel stared.

“You had another copy?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother knew someone might try to erase the truth.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“She never trusted you?””

Marcus looked at her.

“She trusted me more than she trusted anyone.””

That hurt Vanessa.

I could see it.

Because she knew exactly what that meant.

My mother had seen through her.

Marcus handed the envelope to me.

My name was written on the front.

MAYA.

My fingers trembled.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

Me.

And Marcus.

But I was only a baby.

On the back of the photo was one sentence.

I read it aloud.

“Trust the person who stayed hidden to keep you safe.””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“You.””

Marcus nodded.

Then another sentence caught my eye.

My blood ran cold.

“Because the person who hurt me is someone you love.””

Nobody spoke.

May you like

Then the storage door handle began turning.

Adrian had found us.
