Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The voice echoed through the auditorium.
“Vanessa.””
One word.
That was all it took.
Marcus’s face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
The kind of recognition that comes from seeing something you hoped was buried forever.
I looked at him.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
My father stepped in front of me.
It was a small movement.
Almost automatic.
But I noticed.
For the first time that day, Daniel wasn’t standing beside Vanessa.
He was standing between me and danger.
The doors opened wider.
A man walked inside.
He was tall, wearing a dark coat despite the warm auditorium. His expression was calm, almost relaxed. That somehow made him more frightening.
People who were angry were easy to understand.
People who were calm while everyone else was terrified were different.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The man smiled slightly.
“And yet I am.””
Marcus clenched his jaw.
“Elliot.””
The man turned.
“Well.””
His smile disappeared.
“Marcus Carter.””
The way he said the name made it sound like an accusation.
My stomach tightened.
Another secret.
Another person who knew more than me.
Daniel looked between them.
“Who is this?””
Nobody answered.
The man looked at Daniel.
“So you’re the one who believed the story.””
My father’s face hardened.
“What story?””
The man glanced at Vanessa.
“She never told you?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Leave.””
Elliot laughed softly.
“You still think you can give orders.””
I watched Vanessa’s expression.
She wasn’t angry.
She was scared.
That was new.
Daniel noticed too.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“Who is he?””
Her lips parted.
No answer.
Elliot looked at the medal around my neck.
Then at the memory card in my father’s hand.
His entire expression changed.
“You found it.””
Marcus moved immediately.
“You need to leave.””
Elliot ignored him.
“After all these years, you finally found it.””
I stepped forward.
“What’s on the card?””
Elliot looked at me.
And something strange happened.
His expression softened.
Not kindness.
Something closer to guilt.
“You’re Maya.””
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
He didn’t answer.
That was becoming the most common response in my family.
Silence.
Secrets.
Half-truths.
I was done.
“How does everyone know things about me except me?””
Nobody spoke.
My voice shook.
“I’m tired of being the last person to find out what’s happening in my own life.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Maya—”
“No.””
I looked at everyone.
“No more protecting me.””
The words surprised even me.
But they were true.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
Elliot looked away.
Even Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
I pointed at the memory card.
“That belongs to my mother.””
Then I pointed at Marcus.
“That medal belonged to my uncle.””
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“And somehow she knows why everyone is afraid.””
My voice cracked.
“So someone is going to tell me the truth.””
The silence that followed felt different.
Not empty.
Defeated.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“Your mother found evidence that someone close to her was hiding money.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Marcus nodded.
“Money. Documents. Transactions.””
Elliot interrupted.
“And people who were willing to do anything to keep it hidden.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You were involved?””
Elliot smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“But she was.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Don’t.””
Elliot continued.
“Your wife discovered Vanessa had been moving money through accounts connected to her family.””
Daniel stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
But her voice lacked confidence.
Marcus looked at my father.
“Your wife didn’t die because she was careless.””
He paused.
“She died because she got too close.””
The words hit me.
My mother.
My mother wasn’t just gone.
She had been fighting something.
And everyone had let me believe she was simply unlucky.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel took a step back.
“You knew.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She looked at him.
“Everything.””
My father shook his head.
“You let me bury my wife believing she was wrong.””
“I was scared.””
“You let my daughter grow up without answers.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
I almost laughed.
Protect me.
That word again.
Everyone had used it.
Everyone except me.
Elliot looked at the memory card.
“You should watch what’s inside.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because then you’ll understand why I’m here.””
Daniel held the card tighter.
“What are you talking about?””
Elliot looked toward the auditorium entrance.
“Because whoever sent me isn’t coming to negotiate.””
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
More than one person.
Marcus immediately looked toward the exit.
My heart started racing.
“Who is coming?””
Elliot didn’t answer.
He only said:
“The people who made sure your mother never finished telling the truth.””
The lights flickered again.
And this time, nobody moved.
Because everyone understood.
May you like
The secret wasn’t hidden anymore.
Someone was coming to take it back.
