Chapter 11: The Last Message From My Mother

The handle moved again.

Slowly.

Almost politely.

Adrian wasn’t rushing.

He knew we had nowhere to go.

The door was old.

The lock was weak.

We had seconds.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“What now?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

Then at me.

“Maya, there’s something else.””

I stared.

“Something else?””

He nodded.

“Your mother recorded another message.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

Marcus touched the envelope.

“She hid it somewhere only you would find.””

I looked at the photograph.

The back.

The words.

Trust the person who stayed hidden.

I turned the picture over.

There was a small mark in the corner.

A symbol.

One I had seen before.

My mother used it in every birthday card she wrote me.

A tiny star.

“She left clues,” I whispered.

Marcus nodded.

“She knew you would be smart enough to follow them.””

The door shook.

Adrian’s voice came through.

“Maya.””

Everyone froze.

Hearing him say my name made my skin crawl.

“You don’t know these people.””

Silence.

“You think Marcus protected you?””

Another hit against the door.

“You think your father was the victim?””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

Adrian continued.

“They all lied.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Because she knew he wasn’t completely wrong.

That was the worst part.

Everyone had lied.

But not everyone had lied for the same reason.

I looked at the memory card.

Then the photograph.

Then my father.

“Play the message.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“Here?””

“Yes.””

The door wouldn’t hold forever.

And I was tired of waiting for the truth to arrive.

Daniel found a small computer on a nearby desk.

Marcus inserted the card.

A second video appeared.

Not the one we watched.

A hidden file.

No title.

Just a date.

The day before my mother died.

My hands shook.

The video started.

My mother appeared again.

But this time, she wasn’t smiling.

She looked exhausted.

“Maya.””

I stepped closer.

“If you’re watching this, then I was right.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I hoped I was wrong.””

Nobody moved.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

She looked away.

“Your father loves you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“But he doesn’t know everything.””

My father lowered his head.

My mother continued.

“Daniel has always believed people tell him the truth because he tries to be a good man.””

A sad smile crossed her face.

“But sometimes good people are the easiest people to fool.””

The words hurt him.

Because they were true.

My mother looked directly at the camera.

“Marcus will try to protect you.””

She paused.

“But the person who knows the most is Vanessa.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She started crying.

My mother continued.

“She was there the night everything changed.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

The video continued.

“She didn’t start this.””

Vanessa looked up.

“She was afraid.””

A tear fell down Vanessa’s face.

“But fear makes people choose wrong.””

The room went silent.

My mother’s voice softened.

“Maya, if Vanessa is still with your father when you see this…”

She stopped.

Like saying the next words hurt.

“Ask her what happened to the letter.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

The screen went black.

The door shook again.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“What letter?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“What letter, Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, she looked completely broken.

“The one your wife wrote you.””

My father went still.

“She wrote me a letter?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found it.””

The room became silent.

“You found it?””

Vanessa cried.

“I was going to give it to you.””

Daniel stared.

“But you didn’t.””

She looked away.

“No.””

“Why?””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Because the letter explained everything.””

I felt sick.

My mother’s final words.

The letter.

The truth.

All of it had been hidden.

Adrian slammed against the door.

The lock cracked.

Vanessa whispered:

“She knew I was afraid.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did she write?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She wrote that she forgave me.””

Nobody moved.

My father looked confused.

“Forgave you for what?””

Vanessa’s tears fell.

“Because I was the one who gave Adrian the information.””

May you like

The room went silent.

Then the door broke open.
