Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Lie
The second knock was louder.
The door rattled.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt too small.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“You know him.””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The word barely existed.
Daniel stared.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I thought he was gone.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You thought?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“No. I understand perfectly.””
The door shook again.
A voice came from outside.
“Vanessa, I know you’re in there.””
Her face went pale.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is he?””
Vanessa finally looked at him.
“My brother.””
Silence.
I blinked.
“Your brother?””
She nodded slowly.
“Adrian.””
Marcus whispered:
“The one who controlled the accounts.””
My father stared.
Everything connected.
The money.
The documents.
The fear.
The secrets.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“How long?””
She closed her eyes.
“How long what?””
“How long did you know?””
Her silence answered.
My father’s voice broke.
“How long did you know my wife was investigating him?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“At first?””
She started crying.
Real tears.
But I didn’t know if they were regret or fear.
“I found out after.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“After she died?””
Vanessa nodded.
I felt sick.
“You knew my mother’s death was connected.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I didn’t know she would die.””
The sentence was worse than a confession.
Because it meant she knew something dangerous was happening.
And she did nothing.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You helped cover it up.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I was scared.””
“You were selfish.””
The words landed.
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time, she didn’t argue.
The door shook again.
Adrian’s voice came through.
“Vanessa.””
Everyone froze.
“You have five minutes.””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“What does he want?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“The memory card.””
My father tightened his grip.
“Why?””
“Because your wife’s proof could put him away.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“And you?””
She whispered:
“I was trying to keep everyone alive.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You were trying to keep yourself safe.””
That hurt her.
Because it was true.
The door handle moved.
Everyone stepped back.
Marcus looked around.
“We need another way out.””
“There isn’t one,” Daniel said.
Marcus looked at me.
“There has to be.””
My eyes moved around the room.
The graduation decorations.
The chairs.
The boxes.
Then I noticed something.
A small maintenance door behind the stage equipment.
I pointed.
“There.””
We rushed toward it.
My father grabbed my hand.
For a second, we were just father and daughter.
Not victims.
Not people chasing secrets.
Just family.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“After today, don’t say sorry.””
His eyes filled.
“Then what do I say?””
I squeezed his hand.
“Stay.””
The door behind us started opening.
Vanessa looked back.
She stopped.
Because standing in the doorway was Adrian.
He looked older than Elliot.
Colder.
And completely calm.
He smiled when he saw the memory card.
“There you are.””
Marcus stepped in front of us.
Adrian laughed.
“Still protecting everyone, Marcus?””
Marcus stared at him.
“You never changed.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Neither did your mother.””
My heart stopped.
He knew her.
He knew everything.
“Tell me what happened,” I said.
Adrian smiled.
“You really are her daughter.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t talk to her.””
Adrian ignored him.
“Your mother was brilliant.””
He looked at the memory card.
“She found something she should have left alone.””
“What?””
He smiled.
“The truth.””
The room went silent.
Then Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“You failed me.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
“You were supposed to destroy the card.””
My father turned toward her.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“I tried.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You kept it because you thought you could control the story.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I didn’t know she would give it to Maya.””
Adrian smiled.
And that was when I understood.
This was never just about my mother.
It was about everyone who chose silence.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Give me the card.””
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus whispered:
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
His eyes were serious.
“Run.””
May you like
The lights went out.
And in the darkness, someone grabbed my arm.
