Chapter 8: The Video That Changed Everything
We moved into a smaller room connected to the auditorium.
Not because anyone felt safe.
Because we needed a door between us and whoever was outside.
That was the closest thing to safety we had.
My father locked the door.
His hands were shaking.
I had never seen him like that.
Not when my mother died.
Not when Vanessa humiliated me.
Not ever.
Daniel had always been the person who believed he could handle anything.
Now he looked like a man watching his entire past collapse.
Marcus placed the memory card on the table.
Everyone stared at it.
A tiny piece of plastic.
A lifetime of secrets.
“We need to see it,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
Marcus hesitated.
Then he connected it.
The screen came alive.
A video file appeared.
No title.
No date.
Just one word.
MAYA.
My breath stopped.
My father looked at me.
“She made this for you.””
I couldn’t answer.
Marcus pressed play.
The screen showed my mother.
For a second, I forgot how to breathe.
She looked younger.
Alive.
Her smile was the same one I remembered from old pictures.
But her eyes were different.
Serious.
Afraid.
“Hi, Maya.””
My knees weakened.
Hearing her voice after all these years felt impossible.
The room disappeared.
There was only her.
“If you’re watching this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.””
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“I need you to know something.””
She paused.
“You were never the problem.””
A tear fell before I could stop it.
Those were the words I had needed my whole life.
Not from Vanessa.
Not from anyone else.
From her.
My mother continued.
“I know people will tell you different things about me.””
She glanced away.
“But the truth is, I found something I shouldn’t have found.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
Marcus looked down.
My mother continued.
“There is someone in our family who has been lying.””
The room became still.
Vanessa looked away.
My mother’s voice shook.
“I don’t know who will see this first. I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””
She reached toward the camera.
“I only know one thing.””
The video paused briefly.
Then she said:
“Marcus tried to help me.””
My father looked at Marcus.
Marcus closed his eyes.
My mother continued.
“He wasn’t running away.””
A tear moved down Daniel’s face.
“He was trying to keep me alive.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
The video continued.
“If something happens to me, Daniel needs to know that I never stopped loving him.””
My father broke.
He turned away.
I watched him cover his face.
My mother’s voice softened.
“And Maya…”
I stepped closer to the screen.
“If you are old enough to see this, then you are old enough to know the truth.””
She smiled sadly.
“You were the strongest person I ever knew.””
I cried silently.
Because I had spent years believing my mother left me.
But she hadn’t.
She had left me a message.
A warning.
A piece of herself.
The video suddenly glitched.
Everyone looked up.
The screen went black.
Marcus checked the computer.
“What happened?””
Then a new file appeared.
Not one we opened.
One that opened itself.
The title was:
VANESSA.
My father froze.
“No.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“No.””
Her voice sounded different.
Like she already knew.
The file began playing.
A younger Vanessa appeared on screen.
Sitting in a car.
Talking to someone outside the camera view.
Her voice was clear.
“She knows too much.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
The younger Vanessa continued.
“I can’t let her tell Daniel.””
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman beside me looked like she was watching her own destruction.
The voice on the recording continued.
“You promised me nobody would get hurt.””
A man’s voice answered from off-screen.
“Nobody will.””
The recording paused.
Then a final image appeared.
A photograph.
My mother.
Marcus.
And Vanessa.
Together.
My father stared.
Because he recognized the place.
The date.
The moment.
“That was the night your mother died,” he whispered.
The door behind us suddenly shook.
Someone was outside.
A fist hit the wood.
Once.
Twice.
Then a voice called out.
“Open the door, Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
Because Vanessa knew the voice.
May you like
And she whispered the name.
“Elliot’s brother.””
