Chapter 13: The Witness Nobody Expected
The sentence on the paper burned into my mind.
*“Maya, there is one more person who knows the truth about the night I died.””*
I read it again.
Then again.
My father noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I looked up.
My hands were shaking.
“She knew.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
I looked at the paper.
“Mom knew someone else knew.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
I handed him the note.
His face changed as he read it.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know who it is.””
My voice was barely a whisper.
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
For the first time since he returned, he looked afraid of telling the truth.
“There’s someone else.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
Marcus folded the paper carefully.
“Someone your mother trusted.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“We’re done with half answers.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
He looked at all of us.
“Her name was Evelyn.””
I waited.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who is Evelyn?””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Your wife’s closest friend.””
My father froze.
“My wife never mentioned her.””
“She wouldn’t.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because Evelyn disappeared after your wife died.””
The words landed heavily.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because my entire life suddenly felt like a puzzle where everyone else had the picture except me.
“So my mother had a friend who knew the truth, and nobody thought to tell me?””
Nobody answered.
Because there was no good answer.
Vanessa stood near the doorway, silent.
I looked at her.
“You knew about her too.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I knew your mother trusted her.””
“Where is she?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Marcus answered.
“Chicago.””
My father looked confused.
“How do you know?””
“Because I helped her leave.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You helped her disappear?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your wife asked me to.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Marcus’s voice softened.
“Because she thought you were being watched.””
My father looked away.
The idea hurt him.
Not because he was angry.
Because deep down, he knew it might be true.
I held the medal.
“Mom knew she might not survive.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer broke something inside me.
My mother had prepared for a future where she wouldn’t be there.
She had written messages.
Hidden evidence.
Left clues.
She had spent her final days trying to protect me.
And I had spent years wondering if she had forgotten me.
“She loved you,” Marcus said quietly.
I looked at him.
“How do you know?””
He smiled sadly.
“Because every conversation ended with your name.””
My eyes filled.
Marcus continued.
“She didn’t talk about fear. She didn’t talk about herself.””
He touched the medal.
“She talked about Maya.””
The room became silent.
Then my father’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Nobody wanted another surprise.
Daniel looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
For a moment, nothing.
Then a woman’s voice.
Older.
Shaking.
“Daniel?””
My father stood still.
“Who is this?””
The woman breathed in.
“I think you already know.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Evelyn.””
I grabbed the phone.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then the woman spoke.
“Maya?””
My heart stopped.
“Yes.””
A quiet sob came through the speaker.
“Oh my God.””
She sounded like she had been waiting years to say my name.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t know why those words hurt.
Maybe because everyone who apologized was always apologizing after the damage was done.
“What happened to my mother?””
Silence.
Then Evelyn answered.
“She found out Vanessa wasn’t the person she thought she was.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel looked at her.
Evelyn continued.
“But she also found out something worse.””
My grip tightened.
“What?””
The woman’s voice lowered.
“She found out the person helping Adrian wasn’t Vanessa.””
Everyone froze.
My father looked confused.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Vanessa was covering for someone else.””
Marcus looked toward the door.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
The line went silent.
Then Evelyn said:
“The person your mother trusted most.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
And Vanessa whispered one sentence.
May you like
“No.””
Because she already knew who Evelyn meant.
