Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Missed
The auditorium felt smaller than before.
The walls seemed closer.
The graduation decorations that had looked beautiful an hour ago now felt like they belonged to someone else’s life.
A happy family.
A proud father.
A smiling graduate.
That was supposed to be us.
Instead, I was standing between two men who loved my mother and a woman who might have destroyed everything.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“Say it again.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My father’s voice shook.
“I need to hear exactly what you mean.””
Marcus looked down.
“Your wife was investigating something before she died.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That’s a lie.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You know it’s not.””
Daniel turned toward Vanessa.
“She was investigating something?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””
My father laughed quietly.
A painful laugh.
“You always said my wife was paranoid.””
Nobody answered.
“You always said she was imagining things.””
His eyes filled.
“Was she?””
Vanessa’s silence was enough.
I watched my father break in a way I had never seen.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just slowly.
Like someone finally realizing the foundation beneath their feet was never real.
I stepped closer to him.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Again.
Those words.
But this time they felt different.
“I should have protected you.””
I swallowed hard.
“I needed you to believe me.””
He closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Marcus looked at the memory card.
“Your mother put everything she found on there.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why didn’t she give it to me?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
“She tried.””
My father looked up.
“What stopped her?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Nobody needed an explanation.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, you don’t get to do this.””
She looked at Daniel.
“You think he’s telling you the truth? He disappeared for twenty years.””
Marcus answered calmly.
“Because you forced me to.””
“You left.””
“Because you threatened me.””
“You’re lying.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then tell him what happened the night Maya’s mother died.””
Vanessa went completely still.
My breath caught.
My mother.
The one person who was never supposed to become part of Vanessa’s game.
Daniel looked between them.
“What happened that night?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“You don’t know everything.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then tell me.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because once you know, there’s no going back.””
I felt anger rising.
“There was never a going back for me.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I grew up thinking my mother left me pieces of a life I would never understand.””
I touched the medal.
“I spent years wondering why she disappeared from every photograph.””
My voice broke.
“Why nobody wanted to talk about her.””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the smallest crack in her expression.
“You have no idea what she was involved in.””
I stared at her.
“Then explain.””
She couldn’t.
Because maybe the truth was worse than the lie.
Marcus reached for the memory card.
“Let’s stop guessing.””
Daniel nodded.
“Where can we watch it?””
Marcus looked around the auditorium.
“Not here.””
My father shook his head.
“Why?””
Marcus looked toward the doors.
“Because we’re not alone.””
The room went quiet.
I looked around.
The guests were gone.
The chairs were empty.
The bright graduation backdrop stood untouched.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Then we heard it.
A sound from outside.
A car door closing.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“You know who that is.””
She whispered:
“I told you they would find us.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time, she looked like she wanted to tell the truth.
But before she could speak, the auditorium lights flickered.
The doors opened.
A man’s voice came from the hallway.
“Vanessa.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus turned pale.
Because he recognized the voice.
May you like
And then he whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“He’s here.””
