Chapter 10: The Voice From Fifteen Years Ago

My mother’s voice filled the room.

A voice I had spent years trying to remember.

A voice I only knew through old videos and fading memories.

But now she was here.

Not in a photograph.

Not in my dreams.

Speaking directly to us.

“Vanessa… I know what you did.””

Nobody moved.

The audio crackled.

A low hiss covered the recording, but her words were clear.

“I know you weren’t working alone.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

Marcus closed his eyes.

And Calvin…

Calvin looked angry.

Not surprised.

Angry.

My fingers tightened around the small recorder.

My mother knew.

She knew everything.

The recording continued.

“I found the accounts. I found the transfers. I know where the money came from, and I know who has been moving it.””

A chair scraped against the floor.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes stayed on the recorder.

Like she was back in that moment.

Fifteen years ago.

The moment that destroyed everything.

My mother’s voice continued.

“I trusted you because I thought you were family.””

A tear slipped down Vanessa’s cheek.

I almost didn’t recognize her.

This wasn’t the woman who poured water on my graduation gown.

This wasn’t the woman who controlled every room.

This was someone remembering the person she used to be.

“I was wrong.””

The words from my mother were quiet.

But they hurt.

“Marcus told me not to confront you alone.””

Marcus looked down.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

The recording continued.

“But I thought I could fix this.””

A pause.

Then a sound.

A car door closing.

My mother’s breathing became faster.

“I’m leaving this recording because I don’t know what will happen next.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Maya…”

I looked at him.

He was crying.

Actually crying.

I had seen my father cry only once before.

At my mother’s funeral.

And even then, he turned away.

Now he couldn’t hide.

My mother’s voice became softer.

“Daniel, if you’re listening to this…”

My father froze.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The recording continued.

“I should have told you everything sooner.””

Daniel stepped closer to the device.

“No…”

“I was afraid.””

My mother took a breath.

“Not of Marcus.””

Marcus looked away.

“Not of the truth.””

Another pause.

“Of what it would do to our family.””

The audio crackled.

Then another voice appeared.

A man’s voice.

Calvin.

Everyone recognized it.

“You should have stayed out of it.””

My blood turned cold.

The room became silent.

My mother answered.

“I’m not afraid of you.””

Calvin smiled faintly.

But there was no humor in it.

“You should be.””

The recording shook.

Like it had been moved.

My mother gasped.

Then Calvin said:

“You have no idea how far this goes.””

Daniel looked at Calvin.

“You threatened her.””

Calvin didn’t deny it.

Instead, he stared at the floor.

“She should have listened.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You were there.””

Calvin looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You were there when the car crashed.””

“Yes.””

The answer was so calm that everyone froze.

My father’s face collapsed.

“Why?””

Calvin looked at him.

“Because your wife found something she wasn’t supposed to find.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You worked with him.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I didn’t know he would hurt her.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“That’s your excuse?””

She looked at him.

“I only wanted to scare her.””

My hands went cold.

“You only wanted to scare her?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I was desperate.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were selfish.””

The room went quiet.

Because everyone knew it was true.

Vanessa looked down.

Calvin stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.””

I turned toward him.

“Then explain.””

He looked at me.

“You think this was about money?””

Nobody answered.

“It wasn’t.””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a folder.

And dropped it on the table.

“It was about what your mother discovered after the money.””

Daniel stared.

“What could be worse?””

Calvin looked at him.

“A name.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What name?””

Calvin smiled.

“The person who ordered everything.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Calvin looked directly at me.

And before he could answer, the recorder suddenly stopped.

The batteries had died.

The room went silent.

“No.””

Daniel grabbed it.

“No, no, no.””

He shook it.

Nothing.

Marcus looked at Calvin.

“You knew this would happen.””

Calvin smiled.

“I knew enough.””

I looked down at the folder.

The one thing left.

The one thing my mother had hidden.

My hands moved toward it.

But before I touched it, Vanessa spoke.

“Maya.””

I looked up.

Her face was filled with fear.

“Don’t open that.””

The warning surprised me.

Not because she said it.

Because I believed she meant it.

I opened the folder.

Inside was one document.

One page.

One name.

And the moment I saw it, I understood why everyone had been afraid.

Because the name wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Calvin.

May you like

It wasn’t Marcus.

It was Daniel Carter.
