The Medal Beneath the Gown / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Face in the Photograph

I stared at the image on my phone until my fingers went numb.

The photograph was blurry, taken from a distance, but there was no mistaking the person standing near the edge of a crowded street.

The same strong jaw.

The same deep-set eyes.

The same scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

A man I had only seen in old pictures.

A man everyone said was gone.

Marcus Carter.

My uncle.

My mother’s brother.

Alive.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“Who sent that?”” Daniel asked.

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

My father took one step closer.

“Maya.””

I turned the phone toward him.

The color drained from his face.

Vanessa looked over his shoulder.

And the moment she saw the picture, she stopped breathing.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“You know him,” I said.

Vanessa looked away.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed too.

“You know him.””

“I said no.””

Her voice cracked.

That was enough.

My father grabbed the edge of the table.

“Vanessa, where is my brother?””

She stared at him.

For years, I had watched Vanessa control every room she entered.

She controlled conversations.

She controlled decisions.

She controlled my father.

But now, standing under the bright auditorium lights, she looked like someone watching a storm approach.

“I don’t know where he is.””

I stepped forward.

“Then why did you look scared?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, she didn’t have an answer ready.

The auditorium doors opened behind us.

A group of students walked in carrying leftover graduation decorations, laughing and talking.

The normal noise of the world returned.

But our world had changed.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“We’re leaving.””

Vanessa immediately moved.

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“No?””

“You don’t understand what you’re about to uncover.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Then explain.””

Silence.

That was Vanessa’s favorite weapon.

Silence.

But this time it wasn’t protecting her.

It was exposing her.

I picked up my graduation gown from the chair.

The fabric was still slightly damp from yesterday.

I folded it slowly.

“You tried to embarrass me because you knew about this.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you panic when you saw the medal?””

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You knew what it was.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Your daughter is making assumptions.””

“My daughter asked a question.””

The way he said it made Vanessa go quiet.

My father had spent years standing beside her.

Now he was standing against her.

And I didn’t know if that made me happy or angry.

Because I kept thinking the same thing.

Why now?

Why did he need a secret to break before he could finally see me?

My phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time from the same unknown number.

*Meet me alone. Tonight. 8 PM. Bring the medal.*

I stared at the screen.

Daniel noticed.

“What did they say?””

I locked my phone.

“Nothing.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Maya.””

I hated that he still sounded like my father.

Because some part of me still wanted him to be.

“I’ll handle it.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“You’re not doing this alone.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, maybe she shouldn’t meet whoever this is.””

I looked at her.

That was the first time she had ever agreed with my father.

And somehow, that scared me more.

“Why?””

She froze.

“Why do you care?””

The question hung in the air.

Vanessa looked down.

Then she whispered:

“Because Marcus destroyed every person who tried to help him.””

My father went still.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“I shouldn’t have said anything.””

She walked toward the door.

But before she left, she stopped.

Without turning around, she said:

“Ask your father what happened the night your mother died.””

The door closed.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked like he had just been punched.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad, what did she mean?””

His eyes stayed on the closed door.

And then he said something I never expected.

“She knows.””

“Knows what?””

May you like

He swallowed.

“The truth about your mother.””
