Chapter 5: The Night Nobody Remembered

My father drove home in silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind where every second felt like something was about to break.

Rain tapped against the windshield even though the sky had been clear an hour earlier.

I watched the streets pass by.

People walking.

Cars stopping.

Families laughing outside restaurants.

Normal things.

Things I couldn’t understand anymore.

“Did my mother die because of Marcus?””

The question finally came out.

Daniel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

I turned toward him.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Vanessa say that?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the problem.

My father had spent years saying nothing.

And now every silence sounded like a confession.

When we arrived home, he went straight to the basement.

I followed.

I had never been down there before.

Not really.

Vanessa always said it was full of “old family junk.””

But when Daniel opened the door, I realized it wasn’t junk.

It was history.

Boxes filled the room.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

A life everyone had hidden from me.

My father opened a wooden box covered in dust.

Inside was a stack of papers tied with a faded ribbon.

“I should have shown you these years ago.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

He looked away.

“Because I was ashamed.””

That surprised me.

My father always seemed like someone who never doubted himself.

“What happened?””

He sat on the floor.

And for the first time, he told me something real.

“Your mother and Marcus were investigating something.””

“Investigating what?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

He opened an old envelope.

“Your uncle worked in finance. He discovered money was being moved through accounts that didn’t make sense.””

I looked at the papers.

There were numbers.

Names.

Dates.

“And Mom?””

“She helped him.””

My heart sank.

“Vanessa said she was involved.””

“She was.””

I froze.

My father looked up.

“But not the way Vanessa meant.””

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed my mother standing beside Marcus.

They were smiling.

Happy.

Alive.

“She was trying to protect him.””

“From who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he handed me another paper.

A police report.

The date was the same month my mother died.

My eyes scanned the page.

Then I saw a name.

Vanessa Carter.

I looked at my father.

“Why is her name here?””

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“Maya…”

“No.””

I held up the paper.

“You kept this?””

“Yes.””

“For fifteen years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because Vanessa told me it was nothing.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You believed her.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

My father looked down.

“I was grieving. Your mother was gone. Marcus disappeared. Vanessa was the only person helping me put things together.””

“Put things together?””

He nodded.

“She told me Marcus was responsible.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“You thought my uncle killed Mom?””

“I thought he knew something.””

“And you never asked him?””

Daniel’s eyes closed.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

He looked at the old papers.

“He vanished.””

My phone vibrated.

Both of us stopped.

Unknown number.

Another message.

This time there was no text.

Only a video file.

My father looked at the screen.

“Don’t open it.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent that knows exactly what we’re doing.””

I looked at the file.

Then at him.

“Maybe they want us to see it.””

Before he could stop me, I pressed play.

The screen showed a dark room.

The camera shook.

Someone was breathing heavily.

Then a man’s voice whispered.

My blood turned cold.

Because I recognized it.

It was older.

Rougher.

But I knew that voice.

The voice from the photograph.

The voice of a man everyone said was gone.

“Maya…”

The recording paused.

Then Marcus said:

“If you’re watching this, it means Vanessa failed to keep you away from the truth.””

My father stepped back.

“No…”

The video continued.

“And Daniel…”

The man on the screen took a breath.

“You need to know what she did the night your wife died.””

The video suddenly glitched.

A loud sound came from the speakers.

May you like

Then the final words appeared before the screen went black.

“Don’t trust your own memory.””
