Chapter 13: The Woman Behind the Glass

The photograph shook in my hand.

I looked at my mother’s face.

Not a memory.

Not a dream.

A photograph.

She was standing behind the ambulance, watching everything unfold.

Alive.

Standing.

Waiting.

My mind rejected it before my heart could.

“That’s impossible.””

My father took the phone from me.

His hands trembled.

“No.””

One word.

But it carried years of pain.

Marcus stared at the picture.

Then slowly sat down.

“She survived.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Nobody answered.

I grabbed his arm.

“Marcus.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Your mother survived the crash.””

The room disappeared.

The walls.

The people.

Everything.

Only those words remained.

“She survived?””

Marcus nodded.

“For a few minutes.””

My breathing became shallow.

“Then why did everyone say she died?””

Nobody looked at me.

Except Vanessa.

And that was when I understood.

She knew.

“You knew.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Maya…”

“You knew my mother was alive.””

“I knew she was alive after the crash.””

My voice cracked.

“After?””

Vanessa looked broken.

“She didn’t make it.””

The anger inside me turned into something heavier.

Something colder.

“You let me believe she just disappeared.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

“You always say that.””

My father stood.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus looked at him.

“The crash wasn’t what killed her.””

Silence.

Daniel froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked toward Calvin.

“Tell them.””

Calvin looked away.

For the first time, he seemed afraid.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

My father’s voice became louder.

“Tell me.””

Calvin looked at him.

Then at me.

“The crash was an accident.””

Everyone stopped.

An accident.

After fifteen years of secrets, lies, and fear…

The truth was somehow worse.

Calvin continued.

“Your mother was going to expose the entire operation. She had the evidence. She had copies.””

“Then why was she killed?””

Calvin’s jaw tightened.

“Because someone panicked.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You made the call.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn’t know what would happen.””

“You called Calvin.””

“I wanted him to scare her.””

The room went silent.

My father looked like he couldn’t recognize her.

“You called him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I thought he would take the files and leave.””

Marcus’s voice was quiet.

“But he followed her.””

Calvin looked down.

“I wasn’t supposed to be there.””

“But you were.””

“Yes.””

“And when the car crashed?””

Calvin swallowed.

“I found her.””

I felt sick.

“What did you do?””

He looked at me.

“I tried to save her.””

Nobody expected that.

Not even Marcus.

Calvin continued.

“She told me where the backup evidence was.””

My hands tightened.

“She was still alive.””

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“And you left her?””

Calvin looked away.

That was his answer.

Daniel turned away.

A lifetime of trust collapsed in seconds.

“You left my wife.””

Calvin whispered:

“Yes.””

The room was silent.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There was one thing nobody knew.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother gave the evidence to someone before the crash.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Marcus reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

The same kind of envelope my mother used.

“You.””

I stared.

“What?””

“She knew someone would come looking.””

Marcus handed it to me.

“She hid the final copy where nobody would think to look.””

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Inside was a small note.

My mother’s handwriting.

*Maya, if you are reading this, you are old enough to know the truth.*

My eyes filled instantly.

*The people who love you may not always protect you. Sometimes they protect the lie because the truth hurts too much.*

I covered my mouth.

The note continued.

*But never believe that you were abandoned.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*I was fighting to come back to you.*

I looked up.

Marcus whispered:

“She never stopped fighting.””

Then the house lights suddenly went out.

Everyone froze.

A second later, my phone lit up.

One new message.

Unknown number.

May you like

A single sentence.

*You found the truth. Now find where she went.*
