Chapter 11: The Name Written in the File
I stared at the page.
The letters blurred.
No.
It couldn’t be.
My father’s name was printed at the top of the document.
Daniel Carter.
My father.
The man who raised me.
The man who cried at my graduation.
The man who spent years believing a lie.
Or maybe…
The man who created one.
I looked up.
Nobody spoke.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
Not Calvin.
Especially not Daniel.
“Dad?””
My voice barely came out.
He looked at the paper.
Then away.
That was enough.
My stomach dropped.
“You know what this is.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I don’t.””
“Then why did you look scared?””
He had no answer.
Marcus moved closer.
“Maya, listen to me.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
His silence hurt.
“Did you know my father’s name was on that document?””
Marcus looked down.
“Yes.””
The room spun.
“Everyone knew except me.””
Nobody corrected me.
Because it was true.
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“My whole life.””
I looked around.
“My whole life, everyone knew pieces of the truth, and nobody thought I deserved all of it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Maya…”
“No.””
I raised my hand.
“Don’t.””
My father stopped.
I looked at the document again.
“What is this?””
Calvin answered.
“The reason your mother died.””
Marcus glared at him.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Calvin pointed at Daniel.
“He deserves to know what kind of man he was.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I know what kind of man I am.””
Calvin smiled.
“Do you?””
The question landed.
Daniel looked at the paper.
“I don’t remember.””
Calvin laughed.
“Exactly.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus sighed.
Then he spoke.
“After the crash, Daniel lost pieces of his memory.””
I looked at him.
“Because of the injury?””
“Yes.””
Calvin interrupted.
“Because someone wanted him confused.””
My father turned.
“What?””
Calvin looked at Vanessa.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Did you?””
She started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She couldn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice broke.
“From the truth.””
The room became silent.
Marcus looked at her.
“You manipulated his memories.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I only helped him forget the worst parts.””
Daniel looked like he was going to collapse.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I convinced you that Marcus was dangerous.””
My father stared.
“I convinced you that your wife was just unlucky.””
Tears fell from her eyes.
“And I convinced you that forgetting was better than knowing.””
Nobody spoke.
The anger inside me was too big for words.
“You stole his life.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You stole everyone’s life.””
For once, she didn’t defend herself.
Calvin walked toward the table.
“This is why your mother made the recording.””
He pointed at the folder.
“Your father wasn’t supposed to be blamed.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then why is my name there?””
Calvin smiled.
“Because your wife discovered the truth about you.””
My heart stopped.
Marcus looked at him.
“Don’t.””
But Calvin continued.
“She discovered that Daniel was being used.””
Daniel frowned.
“Used by who?””
Calvin looked at Vanessa.
Then at Marcus.
Then at me.
“By the same person controlling all of this.””
I whispered:
“Who?””
Calvin reached into the folder.
He pulled out another page.
This one was older.
A handwritten note.
My mother’s handwriting.
Marcus grabbed it.
His face changed as he read it.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
Finally, he whispered:
“She knew.””
“Knew what?””
Marcus handed me the paper.
My mother had written:
*“The person behind this is someone Maya trusts more than anyone.””*
I looked up.
My father.
My uncle.
My stepmother.
Calvin.
Everyone.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You’re finally asking the right questions.*
A second message appeared.
*But you’re looking at the wrong people.*
Then a photograph loaded.
A photograph from the day my mother died.
May you like
And standing beside her car…
Was me.
