Chapter 14: The Last Place She Hid
The message changed everything.
Because the truth wasn’t finished.
My mother had survived.
She had fought.
She had left clues.
But she had not come home.
Not because she didn’t want to.
Because something stopped her.
My father sat at the kitchen table for nearly an hour without speaking.
The man who had spent fifteen years believing he lost his wife was now facing something even harder.
The possibility that he lost her twice.
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
I almost looked away.
But this time, I didn’t.
“What are you sorry for?””
His eyes filled.
“For every time I believed someone else before believing you.””
The honesty hurt.
But it was the first honest thing he had given me.
“I spent years thinking I wasn’t enough.””
His face broke.
“Maya…”
“I thought Mom left me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She never left you.””
I looked at the note.
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“She fought for me.””
Marcus nodded.
“She did.””
The next clue came from the memory card.
After replacing the damaged file, Marcus found one hidden folder.
A single video.
Recorded by my mother.
She appeared older than the pictures I remembered.
Tired.
But alive.
She sat in a small room.
And when she looked into the camera, I forgot how to breathe.
“Maya.””
My mother smiled sadly.
“If you’re watching this, then you found Marcus.””
I covered my mouth.
Her voice.
Her face.
Real.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I tried.””
She looked down.
“I need you to know something. Your father did not betray us.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The words destroyed him.
“He was manipulated.””
My mother continued.
“Vanessa was afraid. Calvin was desperate. But the person who started everything was someone none of us expected.””
Marcus leaned closer.
The video shook slightly.
My mother whispered:
“The person who controlled the accounts was someone inside the company.””
A pause.
“Someone with access to everything.””
I looked at Calvin.
Then Vanessa.
But my mother’s next words stopped me.
“Someone who wanted Daniel blamed.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Marcus spoke.
“I know who it was.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Who?””
He looked at the screen.
“Your father’s business partner.””
Daniel frowned.
“James?””
Marcus nodded.
My father stood.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because James died.””
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“He disappeared.””
I felt a chill.
Another person.
Another lie.
Another disappearance.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
This time, it wasn’t from an unknown number.
It was from a saved contact.
A contact that had never sent me anything before.
The name on the screen made my blood freeze.
*Mom.*
The message was simple.
*I know you found out.*
My hands shook.
Impossible.
Everyone stared.
Daniel whispered:
“Maya?””
Another message appeared.
*I’m sorry it took this long.*
Then another.
*But I couldn’t come home until I knew you were safe.*
My heart stopped.
Marcus grabbed my phone.
“Maya…”
A final message appeared.
*Meet me where it all started. Alone.*
Below it was an address.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
His face went pale.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Where?””
He didn’t answer.
May you like
Marcus did.
“The place where your mother disappeared.””
