Chapter 8: The Memory That Was Stolen
The room went silent after Marcus spoke.
My father looked like the floor had disappeared beneath him.
“What did you say?””
Marcus didn’t look away.
“I said you don’t remember that night correctly.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“No, I remember.””
Marcus’s expression softened.
“That’s what makes it worse.””
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus pulled out a chair and sat down.
For the first time, he looked tired.
Not like a criminal hiding.
Like someone who had carried something too heavy for too long.
“Your mother wasn’t supposed to die that night.””
My breath caught.
Nobody moved.
Marcus continued.
“She called me at 10:17 PM.””
Daniel stared.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Because after that call, everything changed.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“What did she say?””
Marcus looked at me.
“She said she found proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He glanced toward Vanessa.
“The accounts. The names. The money.””
Vanessa stood.
“You’re still doing this?””
Marcus looked at her.
“You’re still pretending?””
She stepped closer.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice suddenly broke.
And that surprised me.
Because anger was what Vanessa always used.
Fear was new.
Marcus looked at her.
“Tell them.””
She said nothing.
“Tell Daniel what happened after the crash.””
My father went still.
Crash.
The word seemed to unlock something.
He grabbed the edge of the table.
“What crash?””
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
He closed his eyes.
A memory.
A painful one.
“I remember the hospital.””
Marcus nodded.
“Of course you do.””
“I remember Maya’s mother…”
His voice broke.
“I remember being told she didn’t make it.””
Marcus looked down.
“You don’t remember the road?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
“You don’t remember the car?””
“No.””
“You don’t remember Vanessa being there?””
The room went cold.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
My father whispered:
“Why don’t I remember?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Because you were unconscious.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“You weren’t driving.””
The words hit everyone.
My father stood.
“Then who was?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Nobody breathed.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“No.””
Marcus continued.
“Your wife was driving.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back.
And for the first time, I saw something beyond fear.
Guilt.
“She picked you up after you left work,” Marcus said to Daniel.
“She was going to meet me.””
My father shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
Marcus pointed toward the old papers on the table.
“Your wife was going to give me everything she found.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“And Vanessa?””
Marcus looked at her.
“She followed her.””
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Marcus stood.
“Not anymore.””
I held the medal tightly.
“What happened?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Your mother’s car went off the road.””
My hand covered my mouth.
“But you said she was driving.””
“She was.””
“Then why blame Vanessa?””
Marcus looked at the woman standing across the room.
“Because Vanessa was in the passenger seat.””
The silence was unbearable.
My father looked at Vanessa.
“No.””
She didn’t answer.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
She looked down.
And that was the answer.
My father stepped backward.
All the years.
All the trust.
All the choices.
Everything collapsed in seconds.
“I don’t remember.””
Marcus nodded.
“Because when they found you, you had a head injury.””
I looked at him.
“And Vanessa?””
“She told police she arrived after the crash.””
My stomach dropped.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
Daniel covered his face.
“Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Because your mother wasn’t the only person who knew about the money.””
My eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“You were involved.””
Vanessa finally exploded.
“You don’t understand!””
Everyone froze.
She was crying now.
Real tears.
“I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt.””
Marcus looked at her.
“But someone did.””
She shook her head.
“I was scared.””
“Your fear killed her.””
“No!””
Her scream echoed.
“I tried to fix it.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Fix what?””
Vanessa looked at him.
And for the first time, she looked ashamed.
“The night she died…”
She swallowed.
“I wasn’t alone.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Then whispered:
“Someone else was there.””
A knock interrupted her.
Everyone turned.
Three slow knocks.
Again.
But this time, nobody moved toward the door.
Because everyone in the room knew one thing.
May you like
Whoever was outside…
Vanessa was afraid of them.
