The Medal That Knew My Name / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The File With My Name On It

Elijah stared at the document sitting on the table.

His name was printed across the top.

ELIJAH REED.

But the person staring back from the photograph looked like a stranger.

A younger version of himself.

A man who believed he understood his own life.

A man who had no idea how much had been hidden from him.

“What is this?”” Elijah asked.

Marcus Vale leaned back slightly.

“A record.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Marcus smiled.

“You always were impatient when the truth got close.””

Elijah’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t pretend you know me.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I know more about you than most people ever did.””

The words made Vanessa step forward.

“You’ve been watching him?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Vanessa looked disgusted.

“You ruined our family.””

Marcus’s expression stayed calm.

“No.””

He looked at Elijah.

“Your family was ruined long before I arrived.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

The shame on his face was impossible to miss.

Elijah noticed.

“You knew this would happen.””

Thomas whispered:

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces?””

Elijah pointed at the file.

“You knew someone was changing records about me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone was watching me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Claire was trying to reach me.””

Thomas lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Elijah stepped back.

Every answer felt like another wound.

“And you still let me believe I abandoned them.””

Thomas had no response.

Marcus looked between them.

“This is why I told you the truth had to come out eventually.””

Elijah turned toward him.

“Don’t act like you’re helping.””

“I’m not.””

The honesty surprised him.

Marcus continued.

“I’m fixing a problem.””

“What problem?””

Marcus tapped the file.

“This.””

He opened it.

Inside were pages of reports.

Military records.

Names.

Dates.

Documents Elijah had never seen.

Vanessa looked over.

“What are those?””

Marcus answered without looking up.

“The reason your life changed.””

Elijah scanned the pages.

Most of it was unfamiliar.

But then he saw something.

A signature.

His signature.

Except he had never signed it.

His face changed.

“This isn’t mine.””

Marcus nodded.

“No.””

“Someone forged my name.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Because your identity was useful.””

The sentence felt unreal.

Elijah slowly sat down.

For years, he had believed his biggest mistake was leaving.

Now he was discovering someone had been moving pieces around him.

Making choices for him.

Creating a version of him that didn’t exist.

“What did they use my name for?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Lily.

Then Vanessa.

Then Thomas.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand something.””

Elijah looked up.

“What?””

“You weren’t the only person who was lied to.””

Marcus pulled out another page.

This one was smaller.

Older.

A hospital document.

Vanessa noticed.

“Why do you have medical records?””

Marcus placed it down.

Elijah looked.

Then froze.

The patient name wasn’t his.

It was Claire’s.

The date was thirty years earlier.

And underneath it was a line that made his breathing stop.

*Emergency Contact: Elijah Reed.*

“I was listed as her emergency contact.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“But I never knew.””

“No.””

Elijah looked at Thomas.

“You knew she was in the hospital?””

Thomas looked away.

“Yes.””

The anger returned.

“What happened?””

Thomas’s voice was quiet.

“She almost lost you.””

Elijah frowned.

“What?””

Thomas swallowed.

“When she went into labor…”

Everyone went silent.

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Elijah’s hands tightened.

“Labor?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your daughter was born early.””

Elijah stared.

“I was never told.””

“No.””

“Was Claire okay?””

Thomas hesitated.

That hesitation terrified Elijah.

“Thomas.””

“She survived.””

Elijah exhaled.

“And the baby?””

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

Then away.

“The baby almost didn’t.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

She already knew.

Elijah looked at his daughter.

The daughter he had never held.

The daughter who had grown up without him.

“You were sick?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“When I was born.””

Elijah’s face broke.

“I was supposed to be there.””

No one answered.

Because everyone knew.

He should have been.

Marcus closed the file.

“But that’s not the whole story.””

Elijah looked at him.

“What else?””

Marcus hesitated.

For the first time, he seemed uncomfortable.

“Your daughter wasn’t the only person they were trying to erase.””

Elijah frowned.

“Who else?””

Marcus looked directly at him.

“You.””

The word hung there.

Elijah stared.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

Marcus pushed the file toward him.

“Someone wanted Elijah Reed to disappear.””

Elijah looked down at the papers.

Then back up.

“Why?””

Marcus’s answer was quiet.

“Because you knew something.””

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“You really don’t.””

Elijah felt cold.

“What did I know?””

Marcus looked toward the airport entrance.

Then back at him.

“Something you discovered before you left.””

“What?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly his expression changed.

He looked past Elijah.

At someone approaching.

Not security.

Not a traveler.

Someone else.

Someone who made Marcus go silent.

Elijah turned.

A woman stood near the terminal doors.

Older.

Tired.

Holding a small bag.

Her eyes locked onto him.

And Elijah knew immediately.

Claire.

May you like

Thirty years later.

Still carrying the weight of everything they lost.
