Chapter 14: The Truth I Carried Home
Elijah sat in silence.
He heard the name.
But his mind refused to accept it.
His commanding officer.
The man who shook his hand.
The man who told him he was a hero.
The man who promised his service would never be forgotten.
“No.””
Marcus watched him carefully.
“You remember him.””
Elijah looked away.
“Everyone remembers their commander.””
Claire sat beside him.
“Elijah.””
He closed his eyes.
A memory surfaced.
A voice.
A handshake.
A promise.
*When you come home, your family will be waiting.*
His eyes opened.
“General Daniel Brooks.””
Marcus nodded.
The name felt like a wound reopening.
Thomas whispered:
“He worked with Richard.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You knew?””
Thomas looked broken.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
Her voice rose.
“You let him destroy us because you suspected?””
Thomas looked at his granddaughter.
“I was afraid.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She wiped away tears.
“You weren’t afraid. You were selfish.””
Thomas accepted it.
Because she was right.
Elijah stood.
“Where is Brooks?””
Marcus answered.
“Retired.””
“Where?””
Marcus hesitated.
Elijah stared.
“Tell me.””
“Chicago.””
Elijah nodded slowly.
The answer didn’t bring satisfaction.
Only sadness.
Because the enemy wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone he trusted.
Someone who knew his family.
Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.
Claire looked at him.
“You don’t have to do this alone.””
Elijah looked at her.
Thirty years ago, he would have given anything to hear those words.
Now he almost couldn’t believe them.
“I thought you hated me.””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I hated that I lost you.””
A pause.
“Not you.””
The sentence stayed with him.
Lily climbed onto the chair beside Claire.
“Are you going to leave again?””
The question stopped everyone.
Elijah looked at her.
A seven-year-old child asking the one question that mattered most.
He knelt in front of her.
“No.””
“Promise?””
He looked at the little girl.
At the granddaughter he had just discovered.
At the family he almost lost forever.
“I promise.””
She studied his face.
Then nodded.
“Okay.””
A small answer.
But it meant everything.
Marcus watched them.
Then quietly said:
“There’s something else.””
Everyone looked at him.
Elijah sighed.
“Another secret?””
Marcus nodded.
“I found the person who helped Brooks.””
Elijah’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward Thomas.
The older man’s face changed.
“No.””
Elijah noticed.
“You know.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
The older man finally whispered:
“It was my fault.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“What?””
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I introduced him.””
Elijah stared.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Someone who worked with me.””
A pause.
“Someone who had access to the records.””
Marcus spoke quietly.
“The person who changed Elijah’s files.””
Elijah felt cold.
“Name.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
Then said:
“Samuel Reed.””
Silence.
The name struck differently.
Because it was Elijah’s last name.
Elijah frowned.
“Who is Samuel Reed?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Your brother.””
The world stopped.
Elijah stared.
“My brother?””
Claire looked shocked.
“You never told me you had a brother.””
“Because I didn’t know.””
Thomas nodded.
“That was the point.””
Elijah felt the ground disappear beneath him.
A brother.
Another missing piece.
Another person connected to the secret.
“Where is he?””
Marcus answered.
“Gone.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
Elijah looked at the notebook.
At the files.
At the letter.
Everything led back to the same question.
Why?
Why erase him?
Why destroy his family?
Why hide his own brother?
Then Marcus reached into his bag.
He pulled out a final folder.
“This is everything I have.””
Elijah opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A family photograph.
His eyes moved across it.
And stopped.
There was Claire.
There was Vanessa as a baby.
There was Thomas.
And standing beside them…
Was Samuel.
His brother.
But behind them was someone else.
Someone Elijah recognized immediately.
A younger Richard Hale.
And written on the back of the photograph were four words:
*The plan succeeded perfectly.*
Elijah stared.
Then turned the photo over.
A date was written underneath.
The date was the day he disappeared.
Claire whispered:
“Elijah…”
He looked up.
Because he finally understood.
His disappearance wasn’t an accident.
It wasn’t a tragedy.
It was a plan.
May you like
And the person who started it…
Was still alive.
