The Medal That Knew My Name / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Secret Behind the Name

Elijah folded the letter carefully.

Not because he was calm.

Because his hands were shaking too badly to hold it open.

He had spent thirty years imagining the moment he learned the truth.

He thought the hardest part would be discovering that someone had taken his family away.

He was wrong.

The hardest part was realizing there were still pieces missing.

And someone had kept them hidden.

“Thomas,” Elijah said.

The older man looked at him.

“What did Claire mean?””

Thomas stayed silent.

Elijah stepped closer.

“What reason?””

Vanessa looked between them.

“Grandfather.””

Thomas’s eyes closed.

A tired breath escaped him.

“You should not have brought Lily into this.””

Elijah’s expression hardened.

“Do not say her name like she is the problem.””

Thomas looked at the little girl.

And something in his face softened.

For a moment, Elijah saw regret.

Real regret.

But it disappeared quickly.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

“Then explain them.””

Thomas looked around.

Finally, he pointed toward a quieter seating area near the terminal windows.

“Five minutes.””

Elijah followed.

Vanessa and Lily came with him.

Thomas stopped.

“Not Lily.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“She stays with me.””

Thomas looked at her.

“She deserves to know.””

Vanessa’s voice became cold.

“No.””

She held Lily’s hand.

“She deserves adults who don’t lie to her.””

Thomas looked down.

That sentence hurt.

They sat near the glass windows.

The runway stretched outside.

Planes moved in the distance.

Elijah kept the letter in his hand.

“Start talking.””

Thomas stared at the floor.

“After you left, I made a mistake.””

Elijah almost laughed.

“A mistake?””

Thomas nodded.

“I thought I was making the right choice.””

“For who?””

“My daughter.””

“Not Claire.””

Thomas looked up.

Elijah’s eyes were sharp.

“For yourself.””

The older man didn’t deny it.

“I believed you were too dangerous for her.””

Elijah frowned.

“Dangerous?””

“You were a soldier.””

“I was a husband.””

Thomas looked away.

“You had enemies.””

Elijah stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then reached into his coat again.

This time he pulled out a photograph.

Not old like Lily’s.

Newer.

He placed it on the table.

Elijah looked down.

The picture showed a younger version of himself leaving a military facility.

But behind him…

A man stood near a vehicle.

Watching.

Elijah’s face changed.

“Who is that?””

Thomas’s voice lowered.

“The reason I was afraid.””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Grandfather, what did you do?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I tried to keep your mother safe.””

“By destroying her life?””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Elijah picked up the photo.

“Who is he?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

“Who?””

“A man who wanted information from your unit.””

Elijah’s expression changed.

“This isn’t about Claire.””

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“It never was.””

The words settled heavily.

Elijah looked at the picture again.

The man behind him.

The face was familiar.

Not someone he knew.

Someone he had seen before.

On reports.

In files.

In places where names were never spoken loudly.

“What does he have to do with me?””

Thomas looked toward Lily.

Then Vanessa.

Then Elijah.

“Your family became leverage.””

The word hit hard.

Leverage.

Elijah stood.

“You knew someone was threatening my family?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I thought distance would keep them alive.””

Elijah’s jaw tightened.

“So you stole my daughter from me to protect her?””

Thomas looked away.

“I thought if you hated me, you would stay away.””

“And Claire?””

“She hated me too.””

Elijah almost smiled.

“That was the first honest thing you’ve said.””

Thomas accepted it.

Then Elijah noticed something.

The photograph had a date.

A date from after he was supposed to have left.

He pointed.

“This was taken after I came home.””

Thomas nodded.

Elijah looked up.

“Someone was watching me.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Thomas hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone who still is.””

Vanessa stood.

“What?””

Thomas looked toward the terminal entrance.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Elijah followed his eyes.

A man stood near the security checkpoint.

Watching them.

Not hiding.

Not approaching.

Just watching.

Elijah’s stomach tightened.

Because he knew that face.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

The same man.

Thirty years older.

May you like

Thomas whispered:

“He found you.””
