Chapter 12: The Night I Disappeared
Elijah turned slowly toward Marcus.
The man didn’t move.
No denial.
No surprise.
Just silence.
That silence was enough.
“You.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“You were there?””
Marcus nodded.
Claire’s face tightened.
“I knew.””
Elijah looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know who he was at first.””
Her voice shook.
“But years later, I found his name.””
Elijah looked at Marcus.
“What happened that night?””
Marcus stared at him.
The confidence he had carried was gone.
Now he looked like someone standing in front of a debt he could never repay.
“I was supposed to deliver a message.””
“To who?””
“To you.””
Elijah frowned.
“What message?””
Marcus looked at Thomas.
Then Claire.
Then Lily.
“Your unit discovered something.””
Elijah felt the old instincts return.
A soldier’s awareness.
The feeling that something dangerous was close.
“What?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Someone inside your command was selling information.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“And Elijah knew?””
Marcus nodded.
“He found evidence.””
Elijah searched his memory.
A mission.
A report.
A conversation.
Fragments appeared.
“You’re saying I discovered a traitor?””
“Yes.””
“Then why don’t I remember?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because after that night, you were injured.””
Elijah frowned.
“I was injured?””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at Elijah’s head.
“You were hit.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
Elijah touched his temple.
A scar.
One he had always had.
A scar doctors told him came from an accident.
“What happened after?””
Marcus’s voice became quieter.
“You were supposed to return home.””
“And?””
“You never did.””
Elijah looked at Thomas.
“You knew.””
Thomas nodded.
“I found out.””
“And you still let Claire think I left?””
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Thomas looked at Marcus.
“Of what would happen if the wrong people knew you survived.””
Elijah froze.
“Survived?””
The word echoed.
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
Elijah stared.
“I survived?””
Claire nodded.
“You don’t remember.””
“No.””
“Because they wanted you to forget.””
Vanessa looked horrified.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus answered.
“They erased parts of his memory.””
Silence.
Lily held Claire’s hand tighter.
Elijah looked around.
The airport suddenly felt unreal.
All these years.
All these memories.
Could they have been incomplete?
“What did they do to me?””
Marcus hesitated.
“After the injury, you were moved.””
“Where?””
“A private medical facility.””
“By who?””
Marcus looked away.
Elijah stepped closer.
“Who?””
Marcus finally answered.
“People who needed your silence.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone turned.
Not Lily’s.
Not Claire’s.
Marcus’s.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Elijah noticed.
“Who is it?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
He stared at the name.
Then slowly looked at Elijah.
“It’s him.””
“Who?””
Marcus turned the phone around.
A single name appeared.
A name Elijah had never heard.
But Claire recognized it immediately.
Her face went pale.
“No.””
Elijah looked at her.
“Who?””
Claire whispered:
“The man who ordered them to erase you.””
The phone continued ringing.
Marcus didn’t answer.
Then a message appeared.
One sentence.
Everyone could see it.
*You should have left the past buried.*
Elijah stared at the screen.
The terminal lights reflected in his eyes.
For thirty years, he believed his story was about losing his family.
Now he understood.
His family was only the beginning.
May you like
Because someone had spent decades making sure Elijah Reed disappeared.
And that someone knew exactly where he was.
