The Medal That Knew My Name / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Missing Years

The message remained on Marcus’s phone.

Five words.

*You should have left the past buried.*

Nobody spoke.

The airport continued around them, completely unaware that a family’s entire history had just been pulled into the light.

Elijah stared at the screen.

Then at Marcus.

“Who sent that?””

Marcus locked the phone.

“That doesn’t matter.””

Elijah’s expression hardened.

“After thirty years of people deciding what matters for me, you don’t get to choose anymore.””

Marcus looked at him.

For the first time, Elijah saw something unexpected.

Respect.

Not friendship.

Not forgiveness.

But respect.

“You’re right.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You know who it is.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then say his name.””

Marcus hesitated.

A hesitation that told everyone the answer was dangerous.

Finally, he said:

“Richard Hale.””

The name meant nothing to Lily.

But it meant something to Claire.

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

Elijah turned.

“You know him?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“I heard that name years ago.””

“From who?””

“My father.””

Everyone looked at Thomas.

The older man looked exhausted.

Like he had spent decades carrying a secret that became heavier every year.

“Richard Hale was not supposed to know about you,” Thomas said.

Elijah stared.

“Why?””

Thomas looked down.

“Because you were never supposed to survive.””

The words were quiet.

But they cut through the terminal.

Vanessa grabbed her grandfather’s arm.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at her.

“It means I made the biggest mistake of my life.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“Start from the beginning.””

Thomas sighed.

“I knew Richard before I knew you.””

“How?””

“He worked with people connected to your military unit.””

Elijah frowned.

“Government?””

“No.””

Thomas looked away.

“Something worse.””

The answer made everyone uncomfortable.

Marcus spoke.

“Richard wasn’t interested in money.””

Elijah looked at him.

“What was he interested in?””

“Control.””

The word hung in the air.

Marcus continued.

“He built influence by collecting secrets. People’s mistakes. People’s weaknesses. Anything he could use.””

Claire whispered:

“And Elijah found out.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Elijah looked at the notebook in his hand.

“My notes.””

Claire nodded.

“You were documenting everything.””

He flipped through the pages.

Names.

Dates.

Meetings.

Evidence.

A memory flashed.

A dark room.

A voice.

A warning.

Then it disappeared.

Elijah closed the notebook.

“Why can’t I remember?””

Marcus answered.

“Because Richard made sure you wouldn’t.””

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“What did he do?””

Marcus looked at Elijah.

“He had you taken after your injury.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Elijah’s stomach tightened.

“Then what?””

“You were kept somewhere for weeks.””

“Weeks?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody looked for me?””

Claire immediately answered:

“I did.””

Her voice broke.

“I searched everywhere.””

Elijah looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“Don’t apologize for something someone else did.””

The sentence hit him harder than anger.

Because she wasn’t blaming him anymore.

Neither of them were.

The lie was finally dying.

Thomas looked toward the terminal exit.

“We need to leave.””

Elijah looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Richard knows you’re here, this isn’t over.””

Marcus nodded.

“He’s already moving.””

A notification appeared on Marcus’s phone.

Another message.

This time, a photo.

Everyone leaned closer.

The image showed them.

Taken seconds earlier.

From somewhere inside the airport.

Lily gasped.

“Someone took our picture?””

Vanessa immediately pulled Lily closer.

Elijah stared at the photo.

A stranger watching them.

A hidden camera.

A reminder.

They were still being watched.

Marcus deleted the message.

But it was too late.

The damage was done.

Elijah looked around the terminal.

For the first time in thirty years, he wasn’t just searching for answers.

He was protecting his family.

His family.

The word still felt new.

But it felt right.

“Where is Richard now?”” Elijah asked.

Marcus looked at him.

“You don’t want to find him.””

Elijah picked up his medal.

The old piece of metal that started everything.

“Yes.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Elijah looked at Lily.

Then Vanessa.

Then Claire.

“I understand exactly.””

His voice became steady.

“For thirty years, he took my life.””

A pause.

“He doesn’t get another day.””

Marcus stared at him.

Then slowly nodded.

“Then you need to know one more thing.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at Thomas.

“Richard wasn’t acting alone.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

Elijah noticed.

“Who else?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“The person who helped him erase you…”

He paused.

“Was someone Elijah trusted.””

The words landed like a final blow.

Elijah stared.

“No.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

And then he said a name.

A name that made Elijah forget how to breathe.

Because it belonged to someone who had been there the entire time.

Someone he thought was his friend.

May you like

Someone he never suspected.

“Your commanding officer.””
