The Medal That Knew My Name / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Call

For several seconds, Elijah could not move.

Lily stood in front of him, holding the phone with both hands.

The screen glowed between them.

MOM.

A name that meant nothing to anyone else in the terminal.

But to him, it carried the weight of three decades.

Vanessa watched his face carefully.

The confidence she had once worn like armor was gone.

Now she looked like someone waiting for a storm she knew was coming.

“Answer it,” Lily whispered.

Elijah stared at the phone.

“I…”

His voice failed.

Lily tilted her head.

“Are you scared?””

The question was so simple that it almost broke him.

Because yes.

He was.

The same man who had walked through war zones.

The same man who had stood in front of commanders and enemies.

Was afraid of touching a phone.

Because sometimes the hardest battles weren’t fought with weapons.

They were fought with memories.

Elijah slowly took the phone.

“Hello?””

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s breathing.

A sound he remembered.

A sound he had spent years trying to erase.

“Elijah?””

His entire body froze.

The airport disappeared.

Not physically.

But everything around him became distant.

That voice.

Older now.

Different.

But still hers.

He closed his eyes.

“Claire.””

Lily looked up at him.

Vanessa looked away.

The woman on the phone said nothing for several seconds.

Then:

“You really came.””

Elijah gripped the phone tighter.

“I didn’t know you were here.””

“That’s not what I mean.””

Her voice trembled.

“You really came back.””

A thousand questions filled his mind.

Questions he had carried every day.

Why did you leave?

Why didn’t you answer?

Why didn’t you look for me?

Why did you let me believe you were gone?

But only one sentence came out.

“Where are you?””

A long pause.

Then Claire answered.

“Across the terminal.””

Elijah looked around.

The bright lights.

The glass walls.

The travelers moving past them.

“You’re here?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you come yourself?””

The silence returned.

And somehow that silence hurt more.

Finally, Claire said:

“Because I didn’t know if you wanted to see me.””

Elijah looked down at Lily.

The little girl stared back at him.

Waiting.

“I never stopped wanting to see you.””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“But I thought you were gone.””

Claire exhaled.

“Gone?””

The sadness in her voice changed into something sharper.

“Elijah, you disappeared.””

He flinched.

“I wrote.””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“You sent one letter.””

The words struck him.

“One letter?””

“Yes.””

Elijah looked at the old folded paper in his hand.

“That letter?””

“You kept it?””

His eyes dropped.

“I never let it go.””

Claire’s voice became softer.

“Then why did you?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he had no answer that didn’t sound like an excuse.

A child cried somewhere near the boarding area.

A suitcase rolled across the floor.

The world continued moving.

But Elijah stood completely still.

“Claire…”

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

He looked at Lily.

At the child who had just discovered a truth she wasn’t supposed to know.

“I thought my life would destroy yours.””

Claire laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“You made that decision for me.””

Elijah closed his eyes.

She was right.

Before he could respond, Claire spoke again.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did you ever receive my letters?””

His eyes opened.

“My letters?””

“Yes.””

Elijah frowned.

“I never got any.””

A pause.

A painful one.

Then Claire whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Elijah.””

He turned.

Her face had changed completely.

She looked terrified.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“There’s something you need to know.””

Elijah held the phone tighter.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at the old letter.

“Your letter wasn’t the only one that disappeared.””

The air around them seemed to stop.

Elijah stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Before Vanessa could answer, Claire’s voice came through the phone.

“Elijah?””

He lifted it back to his ear.

“Yes?””

Her voice shook.

“Who is that woman?””

He looked at Vanessa.

The airport employee who had blocked him from entering.

The woman who somehow knew his name.

The woman who had been protecting Lily.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa looked down.

Then quietly said:

“Yes, you do.””

Elijah’s eyes narrowed.

“No.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“My last name is Cole.””

The name hit him.

Not because it was familiar.

Because Claire suddenly stopped breathing.

On the phone, her voice became a whisper.

“Vanessa?””

The employee closed her eyes.

“Yes, Mom.””

Elijah froze.

The phone nearly slipped from his hand.

Lily looked confused.

“My mom?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I’m your daughter.””

Elijah stared at her.

The world tilted.

The woman standing beside the lounge door wasn’t just an airport employee.

She was part of the story he thought had ended thirty years ago.

And then Claire said the words that made Elijah’s blood run cold.

“Elijah…”

May you like

Her voice trembled.

“There’s something you don’t know about the night you left.””
