Chapter 6: The Man Who Buried the Truth
Elijah stared at the screen.
The notification was simple.
A passenger update.
A name.
Nothing more.
But to him, it felt like a door opening.
“Who is it?”” Vanessa asked.
Elijah didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the phone.
The name burned into his memory.
Thomas Cole.
Vanessa’s grandfather.
The man who had taken his letters.
The man who had decided Elijah wasn’t worthy.
The man who had erased thirty years.
“He’s here,” Elijah whispered.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
Elijah slowly lifted the phone.
“Thomas Cole.””
Lily looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Vanessa looked away.
“My grandfather.””
The airport announcement echoed above them.
Passengers were called to gates.
Families hugged goodbye.
People laughed.
People rushed.
But Elijah felt like he was standing inside a storm.
“Why would he be here?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Elijah looked at her.
“You know.””
She hesitated.
“Because he asked me to make sure you never reached Mom.””
The words shocked him.
Even after everything.
Even after all the revelations.
That still hurt.
“You knew?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I knew part of it.””
“Part?””
“I knew he was afraid you would come back.””
Elijah stared.
“Afraid?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He always said you would ruin everything.””
Elijah looked at Lily.
A child who had grown up without knowing him.
A daughter who had grown up without him.
A woman who had spent her life believing a story someone else wrote.
“He ruined everything.””
Vanessa didn’t argue.
Because she knew.
A voice suddenly came from behind them.
“Careful with accusations, Elijah.””
The entire group turned.
A tall elderly Black man stood near the security ropes.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
A calm expression.
Too calm.
Thomas Cole.
Elijah’s hand tightened.
For thirty years, he had imagined this moment.
Sometimes he imagined anger.
Sometimes revenge.
Sometimes forgiveness.
But now, seeing the man standing in front of him, he felt something else.
Disbelief.
“You.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You look older.””
Elijah stared.
“So do you.””
Thomas glanced at the medal in his hand.
Then the letter.
Then Lily.
His expression shifted slightly.
Almost fear.
“You found her.””
Elijah noticed.
The fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You knew?””
Thomas said nothing.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Grandfather.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You disobeyed me.””
Her face hardened.
“No.””
She pointed toward Lily.
“I stopped helping you hurt people.””
Thomas sighed.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””
Elijah stepped forward.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“I understand perfectly.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You think you know the truth?””
Elijah held up the letter.
“I know you stole thirty years from me.””
Thomas’s expression remained controlled.
“You abandoned my daughter.””
The words struck.
Elijah flinched.
“I never did.””
“You left.””
“I served my country.””
“You chose that over family.””
Elijah’s eyes narrowed.
“I chose to come home.””
Thomas looked away.
For the first time, a crack appeared in his confidence.
Because he knew something.
Something Elijah didn’t.
Lily looked at Thomas.
“Are you the reason my mom was sad?””
The question was innocent.
But it landed harder than any accusation.
Thomas looked at the child.
Then away.
“I protected my family.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You controlled it.””
Thomas’s jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I spent my entire life believing he left us.””
She pointed at Elijah.
“Because you wanted me to.””
Thomas said nothing.
The silence was confirmation.
Elijah felt anger rising.
But beneath it was something worse.
Pain.
Because every year he had lost suddenly had a face.
Thomas looked at Lily.
“She was never supposed to know.””
Elijah froze.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked back at him.
And for the first time, he looked old.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“You don’t know what happened after you left.””
Elijah stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
Thomas looked toward the airport exit.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
Because Thomas looked back at Lily.
And whispered:
“Because the truth isn’t just about me.””
A chill moved through Elijah.
“What truth?””
Thomas reached into his coat pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
Similar to Elijah’s letter.
Vanessa gasped.
“No.””
Elijah stared.
“What is that?””
Thomas looked directly at him.
“The letter you were never supposed to receive.””
And before anyone could move, Thomas placed the envelope in Elijah’s hand.
On the front, written in faded ink, was a name.
ELIJAH REED.
But underneath it was a second line.
May you like
A sentence that made Elijah’s heart stop.
