Chapter 10: The Mother Who Came Back After Nine Years
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The woman sitting inside the black SUV was the last person I expected to see.
Claire.
Noah's biological mother.
The woman who had left when he was six months old.
The woman who had signed away her parental rights after telling me she wasn't ready to raise a child.
The woman whose photograph I had kept in a drawer because I wanted Noah to know that he had once been loved by both his parents, even if things hadn't worked out.
And now she was sitting outside my house.
After nine years.
Noah looked up at me.
"Dad, who is that?""
I swallowed.
"Someone I used to know.""
Claire opened the car door.
She stepped out wearing a cream-colored coat, expensive sunglasses, and a pair of boots that looked completely inappropriate for the muddy driveway.
She looked older.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
"Marcus.""
I positioned myself between her and Noah.
"What are you doing here?""
She glanced at the boy behind me.
"Is that Noah?""
I didn't answer.
She removed her sunglasses.
"Oh, my God. He's so big.""
Noah held his blue airplane closer to his chest.
"Who are you?""
Claire's lips trembled.
"I'm your mother, sweetheart.""
Noah looked at me.
I could feel his confusion.
I crouched beside him.
"This is Claire. She is your biological mother.""
He stared at her.
Then he asked a question that made her expression collapse.
"Are you the one who left me?""
Claire covered her mouth.
I stood.
"You don't get to show up after nine years and expect him to call you Mom.""
"I know.""
"Do you?""
She looked down.
"I know I made mistakes.""
"Mistakes?""
I pointed toward the house.
"He's been washing dishes with a broken arm. He's been told his father abandoned him. He's been made to believe he owes money for his own education. And now you appear outside my house?""
Claire shook her head.
"I didn't know about any of that.""
"Then why are you here?""
She looked toward the SUV.
"Because Daniel contacted me.""
My stomach tightened.
"Daniel Brooks?""
She nodded.
"What did he tell you?""
"That Vanessa was having trouble managing Noah. He said you had become unstable and that the child might need another family arrangement.""
I stared at her.
"Another family arrangement?""
"He said you were planning to move away with Noah and prevent everyone from seeing him.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's rich.""
Claire took a step closer.
"Marcus, please. Can we talk?""
"No.""
"Just five minutes.""
"You've had nine years.""
She flinched.
Noah tugged my sleeve.
"Dad, why is she here?""
I looked down.
"She says Daniel contacted her.""
Noah's expression changed.
"Daniel?""
Claire noticed.
"Sweetheart, do you know him?""
Noah nodded.
"He wants me to go away.""
Claire looked at me.
"What?""
I didn't answer.
Noah continued.
"He said I was going to live at a school, and Mom said I couldn't tell Dad.""
Claire's face lost its color.
She looked at the boy again.
Then she whispered, "Oh, my God.""
I took Noah inside.
"Wait here, buddy. I'll be right back.""
He hesitated.
"Don't leave me.""
"I won't.""
I left the front door open and stepped onto the porch.
Claire was crying now.
"Marcus, I didn't know Vanessa was doing this.""
"Why did Daniel contact you?""
She wiped her face.
"Because he said he needed someone to confirm that you had abandoned Noah.""
I stared at her.
"Did you agree?""
"No.""
"Did you sign anything?""
She hesitated.
My stomach dropped.
"Claire.""
"I signed a statement.""
I felt the world tilt.
"What statement?""
"He said it was only confirming that I had not been involved in Noah's life. He told me it was necessary for the school arrangement.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you read it?""
"Not carefully.""
"Did you swear under oath that I had abandoned him?""
She nodded.
I stepped away.
"Unbelievable.""
"I didn't know he was using it to take Noah away.""
"Why would you sign something without reading it?""
She began crying harder.
"Because I thought I could make things right.""
I turned toward her.
"How?""
She reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.
"Daniel promised me something.""
I looked at it.
It was a draft guardianship arrangement.
My name appeared on the first page.
Claire's name appeared on the second.
And beneath her name was a clause granting her temporary custody of Noah.
I stared at her.
"Why would Daniel arrange this?""
Claire shook her head.
"He said Vanessa was planning to marry him. He wanted Noah placed somewhere safe until everything was settled. Then he said I could take him.""
"Take him where?""
"To my home.""
I laughed without humor.
"You haven't seen your son in nine years.""
"I know.""
"Do you even know what he likes to eat?""
She looked down.
"Marcus, please.""
"Do you know his teacher's name? His favorite subject? The name of his best friend?""
She said nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Do you know he has a broken arm?""
Her eyes filled.
"No.""
"Do you know he was afraid to eat more than one cracker because he thought someone would take the food away?""
She covered her mouth.
I turned toward the house.
"Go home, Claire.""
"Marcus, I can help you.""
"Help me by telling the truth to the authorities.""
She nodded slowly.
Then she said something I wasn't expecting.
"Daniel told me something else.""
I stopped.
"What?""
"He said Vanessa had already arranged to sell your house.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
Claire opened her handbag again and pulled out a printed email.
"Daniel sent this to me yesterday.""
I took the page.
It was a message from Daniel to a property investment company.
The subject line read:
*REED PROPERTY — FINALIZATION.*
The email said the property could be transferred once the remaining authorization documents were completed.
There was also a proposed closing date.
November 14.
The same day Vanessa had circled on the family calendar.
The wedding.
I looked at Claire.
"Why would he need you involved?""
She hesitated.
"Because he said you might disappear with Noah. He wanted someone who could legally request custody if you refused to cooperate.""
I stared at the email.
Daniel wasn't simply trying to replace me as Noah's father.
He was trying to create enough legal confusion that nobody would know who had the right to make decisions.
And while everyone argued about custody, he intended to take control of my property.
I called Robert.
He listened as I explained everything.
"Marcus, don't let Claire sign anything else. We need copies of the documents and a complete statement from her.""
"Understood.""
"And I want you to bring Noah somewhere secure tonight. I'll arrange a consultation with the family court attorney.""
I agreed.
Before ending the call, Robert added:
"One more thing. The courthouse just confirmed that Vanessa's guardianship application was rejected.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
"But she has filed an emergency motion challenging your fitness as Noah's sole caregiver.""
I closed my eyes.
Claire watched me.
"What's happening?""
I looked at her.
"Your son is being used as a bargaining chip.""
Then I turned toward the front door.
Noah was standing there.
He had heard enough to understand that something was wrong.
"Dad?""
"Yes, buddy?""
He looked at Claire.
Then he asked quietly:
"Does she want me because she loves me, or because Daniel told her to?""
May you like
Claire began sobbing.
And for the first time in nine years, she had no answer.
