The Money I Sent for My Son / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Insurance Policy With Daniel's Name on It

I couldn't take my eyes off the insurance policy.

The document listed me as the insured person.

The coverage amount was $750,000.

And beneath the beneficiary section was Daniel Brooks.

I read the page again, hoping I had misunderstood something.

I hadn't.

"Patricia," I said quietly, "why is Daniel listed as the beneficiary of my life insurance?""

She sat down.

"I don't know.""

"Don't lie to me.""

She pressed her hands together.

"Vanessa said it was part of a financial arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

"She told me you had agreed to restructure your insurance because you were working in construction. She said Daniel would help manage the household if something happened to you.""

I stared at her.

"Did I sign this?""

She shook her head.

"Vanessa said you had.""

Robert called again.

I answered and put him on speaker.

"I've seen the policy," I said.

"Good. I need you to contact the insurance company immediately. Tell them you dispute the beneficiary change and request that they freeze any further modifications pending an investigation.""

"Can they do that?""

"They can explain the available protective procedures. Don't make assumptions until they confirm the status.""

I nodded.

"What else?""

"I've reviewed the submitted authorization. The signature appears inconsistent with your known signature, but we need a formal examination.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Did you know Daniel was listed as the beneficiary?""

She shook her head.

"Not until now.""

Robert spoke again.

"Mr. Reed, we also found a document indicating Vanessa attempted to increase the policy coverage.""

My stomach tightened.

"To how much?""

"One million dollars.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked, "When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

I looked toward the staircase.

Noah was upstairs.

He had no idea that adults he once trusted had been making plans involving his father's money, his education, and his future.

I walked into the hallway.

"Robert, I want every document preserved. I want the authorities informed. And I want this investigated.""

"Understood.""

I ended the call.

Patricia remained at the table.

"Marcus, I swear I didn't know about the insurance.""

I turned toward her.

"You knew about the money. You knew about the property document. You knew about Greenwood.""

"I didn't know Daniel would go this far.""

"How far did you think he would go?""

She started crying again.

"I thought Vanessa would eventually come to her senses.""

"She's an adult, Patricia. So are you.""

She covered her face.

I picked up the envelope.

"You're going to give Robert everything you have. Every message. Every transfer. Every document.""

She nodded.

"And you're not contacting Noah without his father's permission.""

Her head lifted.

"Please don't keep my grandson away from me.""

I looked at her.

"That's not my decision alone anymore. He needs to feel safe.""

She left twenty minutes later.

I locked the door behind her.

Then I called the insurance company.

The representative confirmed that a beneficiary change had been submitted through an online authorization process.

The request had been approved.

I explained that I had never authorized it.

The representative placed the policy under review and gave me a case number.

She also confirmed that the attempted increase in coverage had not been completed.

I wrote everything down.

By the time I finished, my hands were shaking.

I wasn't afraid of Daniel because of the money.

I was afraid of what someone might do when they realized their plan was falling apart.

That afternoon, Robert contacted the appropriate authorities and submitted the evidence concerning the suspected forged documents and financial transactions.

He also arranged for an emergency hearing regarding Noah's immediate care.

I spent the rest of the day with my son.

We built a model airplane at the kitchen table.

Noah insisted on painting the wings blue.

"Why blue?"" I asked.

"Because airplanes should look happy.""

I smiled.

"That's a good reason.""

He carefully painted one wing.

Then he looked at me.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Are we rich?""

The question caught me off guard.

"Why do you ask?""

"Mom said Daniel was going to make us rich. She said that's why he needed the money.""

I put down the paintbrush.

"Money isn't what makes a family good, Noah.""

He thought about that.

"Then why did they take mine?""

I looked at his small hands.

"Because some people make selfish choices. But those choices don't say anything about your worth.""

He nodded.

Then he returned to painting.

At 5:30 p.m., my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered Robert's advice to document all contact.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Marcus. We need to clear the air.""

I didn't respond.

He continued.

"I hear you've been speaking to Rebecca.""

"Yes.""

"She's bitter. She has a history of making accusations.""

"Is that why you recorded yourself discussing my son's placement?""

There was silence.

Then Daniel laughed.

"That recording has been taken out of context.""

"Which part?""

"The entire conversation.""

"Did you say Noah was the only obstacle between you and the money?""

He exhaled.

"Look, you're emotional. I understand that.""

"Stay away from my son.""

"That's not going to happen.""

I gripped the phone.

"What did you say?""

"Vanessa has rights. She's been raising that boy. You can't erase her from his life just because you've decided to play father again.""

"Play father?""

"Let's be honest, Marcus. You were gone for over a year.""

"I was working to support him.""

"And she was doing the actual parenting.""

I closed my eyes.

"She made him work with a broken arm.""

"That's between her and the child.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"He's my child.""

Daniel's voice became colder.

"Then maybe you should have thought about that before leaving him with us.""

I ended the call.

I immediately forwarded the recording of the conversation to Robert.

But before I could put my phone down, a message arrived from an unfamiliar number.

It was a photograph.

The image showed Vanessa standing outside Noah's school.

She was speaking to a woman I recognized from the school's administration office.

The message underneath read:

*She's trying to withdraw Noah again.*

I called Mrs. Patterson.

She answered on the first ring.

"Mr. Reed, I'm glad you called.""

"What's happening?""

"Vanessa came here this afternoon with a new transfer request.""

"Did you release his records?""

"No. We refused.""

"Good.""

"But she brought something else.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"A court document.""

"What kind of document?""

"An application requesting temporary guardianship and permission to relocate Noah.""

I stood.

"Where does she intend to take him?""

Mrs. Patterson paused.

"She listed Greenwood Residential Academy as his proposed placement.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did she have a judge's signature?""

"That's the strange part. The document appears to have been stamped, but the court clerk's office couldn't immediately verify it.""

I called Robert.

He told me to send him a copy immediately.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Marcus, if that document is genuine, we need to act quickly. If it's fraudulent, we need to establish that before anyone attempts to enforce it.""

I looked upstairs.

Noah was humming while painting his airplane.

I walked toward him.

"Buddy, put your shoes on.""

He looked up.

"Are we going somewhere?""

"Just for a little while.""

"Why?""

I knelt beside him.

"Because we're going to stay somewhere safe until everything is sorted out.""

He put down the paintbrush.

"Is Mom coming?""

I hesitated.

"No.""

He looked relieved.

Then he asked:

"Can I bring my airplane?""

"Absolutely.""

We packed a small bag.

I took his medication, medical records, school documents, and the notebook documenting his restaurant work.

As I reached for the front door, my phone rang again.

Robert.

I answered.

"Tell me you have something.""

His voice was unusually tense.

"Marcus, I just spoke with the courthouse.""

"What did they say?""

"The document Vanessa presented to the school is not a valid court order.""

I exhaled.

"Then it's fake?""

"It appears to be an unauthorized document. But that's not the worst part.""

I stopped moving.

"What?""

"The filing number belongs to a completely different case.""

"Whose case?""

Robert paused.

Then he said:

"Daniel Brooks's previous custody dispute involving Lily.""

I stared at Noah's little backpack.

Daniel had apparently taken documents from his own custody dispute and used them to construct something that looked like an order concerning my son.

But Robert wasn't finished.

"Marcus, there's another name on the filing.""

"Whose?""

"Patricia Miller.""

I turned toward the kitchen.

The envelope she had left behind was still on the table.

Then Robert delivered the final blow.

"Your mother-in-law filed a sworn statement claiming you had voluntarily surrendered your parental rights six months ago.""

I couldn't breathe.

"That's impossible.""

"I know. But she signed it under oath.""

I looked down at Noah.

He was holding his blue airplane against his chest.

"What's going to happen now?"" he asked.

I put my arm around him.

"Nobody is taking you anywhere.""

But as we stepped outside, I saw a black SUV parked across the street.

The passenger window slowly rolled down.

May you like

And the woman sitting inside was someone I had never expected to see again.

Noah's biological mother.
