The Money I Sent for My Son / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: The Room They Had Already Given Away

For a moment, Vanessa looked as if someone had slapped her.

Noah stood in the doorway, his cast pressed against his chest, his bare feet resting on the cold wooden floor.

I had never seen my wife look so frightened.

Not when I showed her the jewelry receipt.

Not when I confronted her about the missing tuition.

Not even when I mentioned Daniel.

But now, with our nine-year-old son standing between us, she couldn't find a single word.

"Noah," she finally said, forcing a smile, "you misunderstood what you heard.""

He shook his head.

"I heard Daniel say my room would make a good office.""

Vanessa stepped toward him.

"Sweetheart, adults sometimes discuss things without meaning anything by them.""

"You said I was going away.""

"That's not true.""

"You said I was expensive.""

Her smile disappeared.

I felt something tighten in my chest.

I crouched beside Noah.

"Come here, buddy.""

He walked toward me slowly.

I put my hand on his shoulder.

"Tell me exactly what you heard.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"Marcus, don't interrogate him. He's tired and confused.""

I looked up.

"Then let him speak.""

Noah swallowed.

"Last Saturday, Daniel came over. You were still working. Mom told me to take my homework upstairs.""

He paused, trying to remember.

"Then I heard them talking in the kitchen.""

"What did they say?""

"Daniel said he didn't want someone else's kid getting in the way after they got married.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Noah continued.

"Mom said I wouldn't be a problem because she had already found a school that lets children live there.""

My jaw tightened.

"Did they mention a name?""

He nodded.

"Greenwood.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's enough.""

Noah flinched.

I immediately stood between them.

"Don't raise your voice at him.""

She threw her hands up.

"Oh, so now I'm the villain? I've spent years taking care of this child while you played hero from another state.""

I looked at the shopping bags she had dropped.

One contained expensive cosmetics. Another had the unmistakable logo of a luxury clothing store.

"Taking care of him?""

"Yes!""

"By making him work at a restaurant?""

"That was temporary!""

"By letting his arm heal without a proper follow-up?""

"He was fine!""

"By telling him I didn't send money?""

She pointed at me.

"You don't understand what it takes to run this household!""

I took out my phone.

"I understand that I sent you nearly forty thousand dollars.""

Her face hardened.

"Lower your voice.""

"No.""

"Marcus, please.""

For the first time, her voice softened.

She stepped closer and glanced toward Noah.

"Can we discuss this privately? We can work something out.""

I stared at her.

"What exactly do you want to work out?""

She lowered her voice further.

"Daniel is willing to pay you back.""

I froze.

"Pay me back?""

"Not everything immediately. But he can arrange installments.""

I looked at her.

"So you admit the money went to Daniel?""

She hesitated.

"I didn't say that.""

"You just offered to have him repay it.""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

I shook my head.

"You're not negotiating money with me while my son is standing here.""

I took Noah inside.

Vanessa followed.

"Marcus, don't make decisions tonight. We have a marriage.""

I stopped near the staircase.

"Do you remember our wedding vows?""

She looked irritated.

"Don't do this.""

"You promised to love and protect my son.""

"I did love him!""

"Then why did he have to earn his dinner?""

She looked toward Noah.

For a second, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she said, "You have no idea how difficult he became after you left.""

Noah lowered his head.

I felt his fingers tighten around mine.

That was the moment I knew I could no longer allow her to explain away his suffering.

I called Robert.

He answered immediately.

"What's happened?""

I explained the conversation and mentioned the boarding school.

Robert's tone changed.

"Marcus, don't let Noah leave with her tonight. We need to establish a safe arrangement and document everything.""

Vanessa heard him.

"Who are you talking to?""

"My attorney.""

She laughed.

"You're hiring a lawyer because your wife disciplined a child?""

Robert's voice came through the speaker.

"Mrs. Reed, this is Robert Ellis. I strongly advise you not to remove the child from the residence until the appropriate authorities have been consulted.""

Vanessa stared at my phone.

Then she grabbed her purse.

"Fine. Keep him. Let's see how long you can manage without me.""

She walked toward the door.

At the threshold, she turned around.

"And Marcus? Don't pretend you know what happened while you were gone. You don't know the whole story.""

I watched her leave.

A few seconds later, her SUV disappeared down the street.

Noah remained beside me.

"Is she coming back?"" he asked.

"I don't know.""

"Are you mad at her?""

I took a breath.

"I'm upset about what happened. But none of this is your fault.""

He nodded.

Then he asked quietly, "Can I sleep in your room tonight?""

"Absolutely.""

I carried his blanket upstairs and made a bed beside mine.

At 11:30 p.m., after he had fallen asleep, I went downstairs to gather documents for Robert.

That's when I noticed something strange.

The family calendar on the refrigerator had been updated.

A date was circled in red.

November 14.

Beside it, Vanessa had written:

*DANIEL — WEDDING / CUSTODY PAPERWORK.*

Today was November 1.

Thirteen days.

She had planned to marry Daniel in less than two weeks.

But the calendar contained something even more disturbing.

Beneath the wedding reminder was a second appointment.

*NOAH — GREENWOOD ADMISSIONS / NOVEMBER 5.*

I photographed the calendar.

Then I opened the drawer beneath it.

Inside was a thick envelope addressed to Vanessa.

The return address belonged to Greenwood Residential Academy.

I opened it carefully.

The first page was an admissions application.

Noah's name was already printed at the top.

His medical information was incomplete.

His father's signature line was blank.

But Vanessa had signed beneath a statement claiming she was the child's sole custodial parent.

I turned to the final page.

It contained a section titled:

*REASON FOR RESIDENTIAL PLACEMENT.*

Someone had typed:

Child demonstrates behavioral problems, emotional instability, and difficulty adjusting to household expectations.

At the bottom, Vanessa had added a handwritten note.

*Father is absent and should not be contacted.*

I stood there, staring at those words.

Then I heard my phone vibrate.

An unknown number had sent me a message.

There was no greeting.

May you like

Just one sentence.

*If you want to know why Vanessa needed Noah out of the house, ask Daniel what happened to his first wife.*
