Chapter 7: The Night They Tried to Take My Son
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Noah's drawing.
Three people inside a car.
His mother in the front seat. Daniel beside her. And my nine-year-old son sitting in the trunk.
It was supposed to be a child's drawing.
But the words he had spoken afterward had turned it into something else.
"Somewhere Dad can't find us.""
I sat beside his bed until nearly three in the morning.
At 6:15, I called Robert.
"I want to file for emergency custody today.""
"Good," he answered.
"I've already prepared the preliminary paperwork. But there's something you should know.""
"What?""
"Vanessa has contacted an attorney.""
I sat upright.
"About what?""
"She's claiming that you returned unexpectedly, removed Noah from his familiar environment, and are attempting to alienate him from her.""
I stared at the wall.
"She's accusing me of taking my own son?""
"That's the position she's preparing to argue.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Can she actually get custody?""
"She isn't Noah's biological parent, Marcus. But because she has been acting as his stepmother, she may attempt to request visitation or other temporary arrangements. We'll address that. Your strongest priority is documenting what has happened to Noah.""
I looked at the bedroom door.
"Then let's do it.""
By nine o'clock, Robert had filed the necessary emergency requests and contacted the relevant authorities regarding Noah's injuries and the suspected financial exploitation.
I also took Noah to a child psychologist recommended by his school.
Her name was Dr. Elaine Carter.
She spoke to him gently, without rushing him.
I waited outside for almost an hour.
When she finally invited me in, Noah was sitting beside her with a stuffed dinosaur in his lap.
Dr. Carter looked serious.
"Mr. Reed, your son has expressed significant anxiety about returning to the household environment.""
I nodded.
"Did he tell you why?""
"He's described being given adult responsibilities, being punished over money, and being told that his father abandoned him.""
My hands tightened.
She continued.
"I don't want to jump to conclusions based on one appointment, but some of his statements are concerning. We'll document them carefully and recommend an appropriate safety plan.""
"Thank you.""
Noah reached for my hand.
"Can we go home now?""
"Yes, buddy.""
We were halfway to the car when my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Hello?""
"Where are you?""
"With Noah.""
"I know that. Where?""
"Why?""
She sighed.
"Marcus, Daniel and I are coming over. We need to resolve this like adults.""
"Daniel doesn't need to come anywhere near my son.""
"Stop being dramatic.""
I looked at Noah.
He was watching my face.
"Send whatever you need to say through your lawyer.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You really think a lawyer is going to fix this? You're making a huge mistake.""
"What mistake?""
"You're forgetting that I raised Noah for years.""
"You made him work with a broken arm.""
"He wasn't working! He was helping!""
"Then explain the notebook.""
Silence.
I continued.
"Explain the school payments. Explain the forged signature. Explain the recording.""
Her breathing changed.
"What recording?""
I didn't answer.
She lowered her voice.
"Did Rebecca contact you?""
I looked at the phone.
That was confirmation enough.
"You know Rebecca?""
"She has no right to interfere in my marriage.""
"Your marriage?""
"Daniel and I are going to be married. You need to accept that.""
I ended the call.
At 6:42 that evening, someone knocked on the front door.
I checked the security camera.
Vanessa stood outside.
Daniel was beside her.
He was tall, neatly dressed, and holding a black leather folder.
I opened the door but kept the security chain attached.
"Marcus," Daniel said pleasantly.
"We need to talk.""
I looked at him.
"There's nothing to discuss.""
He gave a small laugh.
"Let's not make this ugly. We're all adults.""
"Then behave like one.""
His smile faded.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Where's Noah?""
"Inside.""
"I want to see him.""
"Not tonight.""
Daniel lifted the folder.
"We've brought some paperwork. If you sign it, this whole situation can be resolved peacefully.""
I stared at the folder.
"What paperwork?""
"A temporary guardianship arrangement.""
I almost laughed.
"You want me to sign away responsibility for my son?""
"That's not how I'd describe it.""
"Then describe it.""
Daniel adjusted his jacket.
"Vanessa has been Noah's primary caregiver. She knows his needs. You work out of state. It would be reasonable for us to manage his education and daily care.""
"At Greenwood?""
"Greenwood is an excellent institution.""
"He's nine years old.""
"Some children benefit from structure.""
I looked directly at him.
"And some adults benefit from prison.""
His smile disappeared.
Vanessa slapped her hand against the door.
"Marcus! Stop threatening people!""
I didn't move.
Daniel opened the folder and pulled out a document.
"Sign this, and we'll arrange a meeting with Noah's school. No one needs to involve the authorities.""
I looked at the signature line.
It was the same document Robert had shown me earlier.
The same agreement that gave Daniel access to decisions concerning Noah.
I stepped back slightly.
"How did you get my signature on the property document?""
Daniel's expression changed.
Only for a second.
Then he smiled.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Your witness was Patricia.""
Vanessa's mother.
He closed the folder.
"You're clearly upset.""
"Answer the question.""
"Maybe you should speak to your wife.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Did you forge my signature?""
She looked away.
Daniel placed his hand on her shoulder.
"Come on. We're leaving.""
But before they could turn, a small voice came from the staircase.
"Daniel?""
Noah stood there.
He was holding his stuffed dinosaur.
Daniel's expression softened immediately.
"Hey, buddy.""
Noah stepped back.
"You're not taking me to Greenwood, are you?""
Daniel sighed.
"That's something the adults will decide.""
Noah shook his head.
"I don't want to go.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Noah, don't be rude.""
"I want to stay with Dad.""
Daniel's pleasant expression vanished.
"You're being selfish. Your mother has done everything for you.""
Noah started crying.
I stepped into the doorway.
"Get off my property.""
Daniel stared at me.
Then he leaned closer.
"You should think about what you're doing, Marcus. You don't know how many people have already agreed to this arrangement.""
Before I could respond, a car pulled into the driveway.
Two police officers stepped out.
Robert had arranged for them to be present after receiving a report that Vanessa intended to remove Noah.
One officer approached.
"Mr. Reed?""
"Yes.""
"We received a request to conduct a welfare check and review a possible custody dispute.""
Vanessa immediately began speaking.
"Thank goodness you're here! He's keeping my son from me!""
The officer looked at Noah.
"How old are you, young man?""
"Nine.""
"Do you feel safe here?""
Noah looked at me.
Then he nodded.
"I feel safe with Dad.""
The officer turned to Vanessa.
"Ma'am, do you have any court order authorizing you to remove the child?""
She hesitated.
"No, but—"
"Then this is not something you can resolve by taking him from the home tonight.""
Daniel closed his folder.
"Let's go, Vanessa.""
As they walked toward the SUV, Vanessa turned back.
Her eyes were filled with anger.
"You think you've won?""
I didn't answer.
She got into the car.
Daniel remained outside for a moment.
He looked at me through the open passenger window.
Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.
"Ask your mother-in-law about the money, Marcus. She knows exactly where it went.""
The SUV pulled away.
I turned toward Robert's number and immediately called him.
"Daniel just mentioned Patricia.""
Robert was quiet.
Then he said, "Marcus, don't go anywhere.""
"Why?""
"Because I just received a document from the bank.""
"What document?""
"Your mother-in-law wasn't merely a witness on that property authorization.""
May you like
He paused.
"She was the person who submitted it.""
