Chapter 13: The Man Who Planned to Take My Son
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.
"Say that again," I demanded.
Rebecca's voice trembled.
"Daniel told Lily he was leaving town before the wedding. He said he was taking Noah with him.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was staring at the phone in my hand, her face completely drained of color.
"How?"" I asked.
"He has no legal rights to Noah.""
"I don't know. But Lily heard him speaking to someone. He said the arrangements were already made.""
Robert stood immediately.
"Marcus, put the call on speaker.""
I did.
Robert leaned toward the phone.
"Rebecca, this is Robert Ellis. Did Lily hear where Daniel intended to take Noah?""
"She heard him mention a place called North Ridge.""
Robert exchanged a glance with me.
"North Ridge what?""
"She thinks it was a school or a facility. Daniel said Noah would be there until everything settled down.""
Robert grabbed his laptop.
"Does Lily have the conversation recorded?""
"She recorded part of it. She's frightened, but she agreed to send it to me.""
"Please tell her not to delete anything. Don't confront Daniel. We'll arrange for an investigator to contact her through the proper channels.""
Rebecca paused.
"There's something else.""
"What?""
"Daniel told Lily that Noah wasn't the only person he planned to take.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who else?""
"He said Vanessa was becoming a liability.""
Across the room, Vanessa began crying.
I ended the call and turned toward her.
"Did you know about North Ridge?""
She shook her head.
"Did you know Daniel planned to leave with Noah?""
"No.""
"Did you give him access to Noah's school records?""
She hesitated.
Robert noticed.
"Mrs. Reed, answer the question.""
Vanessa looked down.
"I gave him copies of Noah's medical records and school information.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Why?""
"He said he needed them for the guardianship application.""
"Did you give him Noah's passport?""
She nodded.
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.
"You gave him my son's passport?""
"He said it was only for the school application!""
Robert stepped between us.
"Marcus. We need to remain focused.""
I turned away, breathing hard.
Noah was upstairs with a trusted neighbor who had agreed to watch him while we met with Vanessa.
I thought about his drawings.
The little boy in the trunk.
The words he had written in his notebook.
Still owe more.
I had spent months sending money because I believed I was protecting him.
Meanwhile, the people closest to him had been preparing to take him away.
Robert contacted the authorities and provided the court order, the forged documents, and the new information about North Ridge.
Within an hour, we had an urgent instruction from the family court investigator: Noah's passport and travel documents were to be secured, and no one other than me could remove him from his current residence.
But Robert wasn't satisfied.
"We need to know what North Ridge actually is," he said.
He called the investigator assigned to the financial case.
The answer came twenty minutes later.
North Ridge was a private residential behavioral facility several states away.
It advertised specialized programs for children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
I stared at the name on Robert's screen.
"Why would Daniel send Noah there?""
Robert opened the facility's website.
"They have a transportation service. They also accept placements arranged through private guardianship agreements.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"He said it was a school.""
Robert looked at her.
"Did he tell you that?""
"Yes. He said Noah needed structure.""
"Did you sign anything authorizing transportation?""
She shook her head.
Then she stopped.
Her eyes widened.
"There was a form.""
Robert leaned forward.
"What form?""
"Daniel said it was an emergency contact and transportation authorization. He told me the school required it.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know. He kept the paperwork.""
Robert looked at me.
"Marcus, we need to get Noah somewhere secure tonight.""
I was already reaching for my phone.
When I arrived home, Noah was sitting on the living-room rug, arranging his toy cars in a straight line.
He looked up.
"Dad?""
I crouched beside him.
"Hey, buddy.""
"Are we going somewhere?""
I hesitated.
"Maybe for a little while.""
His face tightened.
"To another school?""
"No.""
"To the place Daniel talked about?""
My chest hurt.
"Did you hear him mention North Ridge?""
Noah nodded.
"He said it was where boys go when they cause problems.""
I took his hands.
"You haven't caused any problems.""
"But Mom said I was difficult.""
"Your mother was wrong.""
He looked at the floor.
"Daniel said I wouldn't be allowed to call you for a while.""
I felt something inside me break.
I pulled him into my arms.
"Listen to me. Nobody is taking you somewhere without telling you what's happening. Nobody is allowed to make you disappear.""
He held on tightly.
"Promise?""
"I promise I'll fight to keep you safe.""
That night, we stayed at Robert's house while an investigator helped arrange additional protection.
At 11:42 p.m., my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*Your son is safer with us. Stop making this difficult.*
I showed Robert.
He immediately photographed the message and sent it to the investigator.
A second message arrived.
*You have until morning to cooperate.*
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed the front of the house where Noah and I had been staying.
Taken from across the street.
Robert called the police.
While we waited, Noah came downstairs wearing his pajamas.
"Is someone outside?""
I put my phone away.
"It's being handled.""
He looked at the window.
Then he whispered:
"Dad, I think I know who sent that.""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
"Grandma.""
I stared at him.
"Why do you think that?""
"Because she came to my room last week when Mom was talking to Daniel.""
He swallowed.
"She asked me if I wanted to go on a trip.""
"What kind of trip?""
"She said it would be somewhere quiet. She said I wouldn't have to worry about money anymore.""
My blood ran cold.
"What did you tell her?""
"I said I wanted to stay with you.""
He lowered his head.
"Then she said you wouldn't be able to stop it.""
I closed my eyes.
Patricia hadn't merely signed papers.
She had spoken to Noah about the plan.
And she had known he was afraid.
The police arrived shortly afterward.
Robert gave them the threatening messages and the photograph.
Before midnight, the investigator called.
They had located a vehicle registered to Brooks Family Services.
It had been seen near the residential facility earlier that week.
The driver had also been identified.
It was Daniel.
But there was something worse.
The investigator said Daniel had booked a one-way flight for the following morning.
Two passengers.
One adult.
One child.
The child's name was not Noah Reed.
May you like
It was listed as:
*Noah Brooks.*
