Chapter 12: The Wedding Invitation That Became Evidence
Vanessa's confession stayed with me all evening.
She had spent months helping Daniel take my money, manipulate my son, and prepare forged documents.
Now that the arrangement was collapsing, she was beginning to understand that she had never been his partner.
She had been another source of money.
I didn't feel sorry for her.
Not yet.
But I wanted to know how much she had hidden.
The next morning, Robert called.
"Marcus, we need to discuss the property records.""
"What happened?""
"The investment company Daniel contacted has withdrawn its proposed purchase.""
"Why?""
"They received notice of the disputed authorization and decided not to proceed until ownership is verified.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
"But Daniel hasn't stopped trying.""
I sat down.
"What is he doing now?""
"He's contacted another company. We found an email sent last night.""
Robert forwarded it.
Daniel had written:
The current arrangement has become complicated. We may need to proceed through an alternative ownership structure.
There was an attachment.
A proposed agreement between Daniel and Vanessa.
The title was:
*BROOKS-REED FAMILY ASSET TRANSFER.*
I opened it.
The document suggested that Vanessa would claim an interest in the property through marital contributions and then transfer that interest to Daniel's company.
The plan depended on my signature or a court ruling recognizing Vanessa's alleged financial contributions.
Neither had happened.
"Can he actually do this?"" I asked.
"Not based on this document alone. But it's important evidence of intent. We'll make sure the appropriate authorities receive it.""
I looked at the date.
November 5.
The same day Noah had originally been scheduled for Greenwood's admissions appointment.
Everything had been timed.
The school placement.
The guardianship paperwork.
The property transfer.
The wedding.
Daniel had built an entire plan around making Noah disappear from my daily life while he tried to gain control of my assets.
At noon, Robert received another call.
This time, it was from the bank's fraud department.
The representative confirmed that a second attempt had been made to change the beneficiary on my insurance policy.
The request had been rejected because the account was under review.
The submitted document included a new signature.
This time, it wasn't mine.
It was Vanessa's.
Robert asked the bank to preserve the original submission.
Then he turned to me.
"Marcus, this is no longer just a family dispute. The financial institutions are treating the suspicious authorizations seriously.""
I nodded.
"Whatever they need, I'll cooperate.""
That afternoon, I received a package at the temporary apartment.
There was no return address.
Inside was a wedding invitation.
The front was printed in gold.
*DANIEL BROOKS & VANESSA MILLER*
November 14.
The ceremony would take place at a private country club outside town.
I almost threw it away.
Then I noticed something handwritten on the back.
*Marcus, you deserve to know the truth before the wedding. Come alone. — Vanessa*
I showed it to Robert.
"Don't go alone," he said immediately.
"I'm not planning to.""
"Good. But don't contact her directly. I'll arrange a safe meeting with counsel present if she wants to provide information.""
I placed the invitation on the table.
"Why would she suddenly want to tell me the truth?""
Robert studied it.
"Because Daniel may have turned against her. That doesn't mean she's telling the truth, but it gives us a reason to listen carefully.""
An hour later, Vanessa's attorney contacted Robert.
She wanted to provide a statement.
The meeting was arranged for the following afternoon at Robert's office.
Vanessa arrived alone.
She looked different.
Her hair was pulled back. Her makeup was minimal. She wore an ordinary sweater instead of the expensive clothes she usually preferred.
She sat across from me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she removed a small notebook from her purse.
"I know you hate me.""
I looked at her.
"That isn't important.""
She nodded.
"I deserve that.""
"Why are you here?""
She opened the notebook.
"Because Daniel lied to me.""
I said nothing.
She continued.
"He told me he loved me. He said we would get married, sell your house, and start a new life. He promised that once Noah was settled at Greenwood, everything would be easier.""
"Why did you agree to send Noah away?""
She looked down.
"Because Daniel said he didn't want to raise another man's child.""
I stared at her.
"And you thought that was acceptable?""
"No.""
"Then why?""
She started crying.
"Because I was afraid he'd leave me.""
I leaned back.
"You were willing to sacrifice a nine-year-old boy to keep a man.""
She covered her face.
Robert interrupted.
"Mrs. Reed, if you intend to provide evidence, we need specific information. General explanations won't be enough.""
Vanessa nodded.
She opened the notebook.
Inside were dates, account numbers, and handwritten notes.
"I kept track of everything.""
I looked at the pages.
She had recorded the transfers from the account I funded.
The money sent to Daniel.
The money sent to Patricia.
The jewelry purchases.
The expenses for the wedding.
And several payments to Greenwood Residential Academy.
I pointed at one entry.
"$2,400. What was this?""
"Daniel's company.""
"Why?""
"He said it was a placement reservation.""
I frowned.
"You paid a school to take my son?""
She nodded.
I felt sick.
"How much did you pay in total?""
"Three thousand six hundred.""
Robert wrote it down.
Vanessa turned to another page.
"There were also payments to the country club.""
"How much?""
"Almost twelve thousand.""
I stared at her.
"The wedding.""
She nodded.
"You paid for a wedding with Noah's tuition money?""
She began crying harder.
"I didn't think it would end like this.""
I stood.
"How did you think it would end?""
She didn't answer.
Then she reached into her purse and removed a small black flash drive.
"There's something on here.""
Robert took it carefully.
"What is it?""
"Daniel's files. I copied them from his laptop.""
"With his permission?""
"No.""
Robert's expression hardened.
"We'll need to establish how these files were obtained and preserve them appropriately. What do they contain?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Everything.""
She hesitated.
"There's a folder about your house. Another about the insurance policy. And one about Noah.""
My stomach tightened.
"What is in the folder about Noah?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Daniel had a plan for what would happen after the wedding.""
"What plan?""
"He was going to use the guardianship agreement to keep you from making decisions about Noah. Then he was going to convince the school that Noah needed long-term residential placement.""
"Why?""
"Because he wanted to become the only person controlling the money and the house.""
I stared at her.
"And you?""
She looked down.
"He promised I would be his wife.""
Robert inserted the drive into a secure computer.
Several folders appeared.
One was labeled PROPERTY.
Another INSURANCE.
The third was labeled NOAH.
But there was a fourth folder.
Its name made Robert stop moving.
*FINAL CONTINGENCY.*
He clicked it.
Inside was a document dated October 30.
Two days before I found Noah at the restaurant.
The first page contained a list of names.
Daniel Brooks.
Vanessa Miller.
Patricia Miller.
Claire Bennett.
Then, beneath them, was my name.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
*Marcus must not interfere after November 14.*
I stared at the screen.
"What does that mean?""
Robert opened the next page.
It contained a detailed schedule.
The wedding.
The property transfer.
The insurance policy.
And a final event scheduled for November 15.
The heading read:
*POST-WEDDING RESOLUTION.*
Vanessa began trembling.
"I didn't know about that.""
Robert looked at her.
"You're telling us you didn't know this document existed?""
She shook her head.
"No.""
He opened the attached file.
It was a draft letter addressed to the police.
The letter claimed that I had been making threats against Vanessa and Daniel.
It also stated that I had become emotionally unstable and had threatened to take Noah away permanently.
The letter was dated November 15.
The day after the wedding.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel had planned to make me look dangerous after the marriage.
And if the false report had been believed, it could have complicated every effort to protect my son.
But something else caught my attention.
The letter contained a paragraph about an incident that supposedly happened on November 14.
It described a confrontation at the wedding.
It claimed I would arrive armed and threaten Daniel in front of the guests.
I looked at Robert.
"I've never threatened him.""
"I know.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"He told me you were going to come.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
"Daniel said you would lose control when you saw us getting married. He said he could use that to prove you were unstable.""
I stared at the screen.
The entire wedding might have been designed as a trap.
Robert immediately copied the evidence and instructed Vanessa not to contact Daniel.
Then my phone rang.
It was Rebecca.
I answered.
"Marcus, I'm sorry to call so late.""
"What's wrong?""
"I just received a message from Lily.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
"Daniel came to my house this afternoon. He wanted to know whether I had given you the recording.""
I looked at Robert.
"Are you safe?""
"Yes. But before he left, he told me something.""
"What?""
Rebecca's voice began shaking.
"He said the wedding wasn't going to happen anymore.""
I looked at the wedding invitation.
"What do you mean?""
She took a breath.
"Daniel told Lily that he was leaving town before November 14.""
I stared at Vanessa.
She had gone completely pale.
Then Rebecca whispered:
"And he said he wasn't leaving alone.""
I gripped the phone.
"Who was going with him?""
There was a long silence.
May you like
Then Rebecca answered.
"Your son, Marcus.""
