The Money I Sent for My Son / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Last Lie

The police moved quickly after discovering the flight reservation.

By 6:00 a.m., Robert and I were at the station providing statements.

The investigator explained that Daniel had attempted to arrange travel using a temporary guardianship document and a copy of Noah's passport.

The document claimed Vanessa had authority to approve the trip.

It also contained a signature from Claire.

Claire.

I couldn't believe it.

"She told us she was cooperating," I said.

Robert looked at the investigator.

"Was the signature verified?""

"Not yet. We have reason to believe the document was altered.""

The investigator placed a copy on the table.

At the bottom was Claire's signature.

Beside it was a statement claiming she supported Noah's temporary placement at North Ridge.

I felt sick.

"She said she wanted to help.""

Robert called her immediately.

She answered on the third ring.

"Robert?""

"Claire, did you sign a transportation authorization for Noah?""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"No.""

"Did you give Daniel a copy of your identification?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"He said he needed it to verify that I was Noah's biological mother. He told me it was for the family court.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"Did you authorize anyone to transport Noah?""

"No. Absolutely not.""

"Then you need to come to the station and provide a formal statement.""

She began crying.

"I didn't know he was going to use it like that.""

I took the phone.

"Claire, you need to understand something. Every time you trust Daniel without checking the facts, Noah is the one who suffers.""

"I know.""

"Then tell the investigators everything.""

"I will.""

We learned that Daniel had also contacted Patricia.

She had been asked to bring Noah to a meeting point outside town.

Patricia initially denied knowing anything about it.

But when investigators showed her the transportation authorization, she broke down.

She admitted Daniel had told her that Noah would be moved temporarily and that I would eventually accept the arrangement.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked when she was brought into the interview room.

She looked exhausted.

"I thought it was already decided.""

"By whom?""

"Daniel.""

"He's not Noah's father.""

"I know.""

"He's not his guardian.""

"I know.""

"Then why did you help him?""

Patricia began crying.

"Because Vanessa said Daniel would leave her if the situation wasn't resolved.""

I stared at her.

"So you helped him take a child away from his father to protect your daughter's relationship?""

She couldn't look at me.

"I thought Noah would be okay.""

I leaned forward.

"He was nine years old, Patricia. He was washing dishes with a broken arm. He was saving crackers because he was afraid there wouldn't be food. And you thought he would be okay?""

She covered her face.

"I didn't know how bad it was.""

"You knew enough.""

She had no answer.

The investigators secured her phone and obtained messages between her and Daniel.

One message was particularly revealing.

*Patricia:* He still refuses to agree.

*Daniel:* Then we proceed without him.

*Patricia:* What if he comes after us?

*Daniel:* By then, the school will have custody paperwork. He won't be able to do anything immediately.

Another message was sent two days later.

*Daniel:* Make sure the boy has his passport. Don't let Marcus see the travel arrangements.

Patricia had replied:

*He trusts me. I'll handle it.*

I read the messages twice.

Then I put the phone down.

Robert touched my shoulder.

"Marcus, the evidence is strong. Let the investigators do their work.""

I nodded.

At 9:20 a.m., the police located Daniel at a private airport outside the city.

He was sitting in a waiting area with a suitcase beside him.

Noah was not with him.

But the investigators found something in the vehicle.

A small backpack.

Inside were Noah's clothes, his favorite blue airplane, a folder containing his medical records, and a printed photograph of me.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*Do not give this to the child.*

I had to step outside when Robert told me.

Daniel was taken in for questioning.

He initially claimed he was helping Vanessa arrange a temporary educational placement.

Then investigators showed him the false travel authorization and the messages from Patricia.

His explanation changed.

He said Claire had authorized the arrangement.

Then he claimed Vanessa had requested it.

Finally, he said he had only been following instructions from the family.

Every answer contradicted the one before it.

But the most important discovery came from the folder in his suitcase.

It contained a draft contract between Brooks Family Services and North Ridge.

The contract included a substantial placement fee.

The payment was to be made from an account linked to the money Vanessa had diverted from my monthly transfers.

There was also a second document.

It was a draft agreement offering Daniel control over the administration of certain assets belonging to Noah.

I read the final paragraph.

It stated that Noah's educational expenses and future financial interests would be managed by Brooks Family Services.

I looked at Robert.

"He was going to control everything.""

Robert nodded.

"That's what the documents suggest.""

"Even Noah's future money?""

"Yes.""

I felt sick.

For months, I had believed Daniel simply wanted my house.

But the house had only been the beginning.

He wanted to become the person who controlled every decision involving my son.

That afternoon, Vanessa came to the station with her attorney.

She gave a full statement.

She admitted redirecting the money, purchasing the jewelry, helping Daniel prepare the school application, and knowingly allowing Noah to believe he owed his family money.

She also admitted that she had told Noah his father had stopped caring about him.

When the investigator asked why, Vanessa whispered:

"Daniel said Noah needed to stop trusting Marcus.""

I watched her through the glass.

For the first time, she looked like someone who understood the damage she had caused.

But understanding didn't erase it.

Later, Robert told me that the court had extended the protective order.

Noah would remain with me.

Vanessa's contact would remain supervised.

Daniel could not contact Noah.

And the attempted removal was now part of the formal investigation.

I returned to Robert's house.

Noah was sitting on the sofa with a blanket over his legs.

He looked up when I entered.

"Did Daniel get me?""

I sat beside him.

"No, buddy.""

"Is he coming back?""

"Not to see you.""

He stared at his hands.

"Did Grandma help him?""

I hesitated.

"She made some bad decisions.""

Noah nodded slowly.

"She said she loved me.""

I put my arm around him.

"Sometimes adults say they love someone but still make choices that hurt them. That doesn't mean you did anything wrong.""

He leaned against me.

Then he asked:

"Can we go home now?""

I looked at him.

"Our home?""

He nodded.

I thought about the house Daniel had tried to take.

The place where Noah had drawn pictures, played with toy cars, and waited for me to return from work.

The place Vanessa had turned into somewhere he was afraid to speak.

"Yes," I said.

"We're going home.""

But before we left, Robert received one final message from the investigator.

Daniel had agreed to provide information about the financial arrangement.

He wanted to negotiate.

And he claimed there was another person behind the entire plan.

Someone who had approached him before he ever met Vanessa.

Someone who had specifically asked him to gain access to my family.

Robert read the message twice.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, Daniel says he didn't come up with this plan.""

I frowned.

"Who did?""

Robert turned the phone toward me.

May you like

The investigator had included one sentence from Daniel's statement.

*The original plan came from someone inside the family.*
