Chapter 12: The Woman Everyone Thought Was Gone

Nobody understood the words at first.

Including me.

“She’s awake.””

I stared at Evelyn.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who is awake?””

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Then Vanessa whispered the answer.

“Lily’s mother.””

The world stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

“That’s impossible.””

She looked terrified.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She died.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone remembered.

The funeral.

The hospital.

The goodbye.

The empty chair at Lily’s school events.

The years of raising my daughter alone.

“You’re lying.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I wish I was.””

I looked at Caleb.

His face was pale.

“You knew?””

He looked ashamed.

“No.””

“Then who knew?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Marcus, I’m sorry you had to find out this way.*

My heart raced.

Another message appeared.

*I never wanted to leave Lily.*

I stopped breathing.

Because only one person would write that.

Only one person called her “my little Lily.””

Only one person would know the exact pain those words would cause.

A video appeared.

My hands shook.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a hospital room.

A woman lying in a bed.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Lily’s mother.

My knees almost gave out.

Lily looked at my phone.

Then covered her mouth.

“Mommy?””

The word came out like a whisper.

The woman on the screen looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus.””

My heart shattered.

“I know you’re angry.””

I couldn’t move.

“I know you think I abandoned you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“But I didn’t.””

The video continued.

“I was told I would never see my daughter again if I didn’t cooperate.””

I looked around the chapel.

Everyone was frozen.

Even Evelyn.

“I was trapped.””

The woman on the screen took a shaky breath.

“And the people who trapped me are the same people who are trying to control Lily now.””

My eyes moved slowly toward Evelyn.

She looked away.

The video continued.

“Marcus, please believe me.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Protect our daughter.””

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily started crying.

Not scared tears.

Different tears.

The kind children cry when they finally get something they thought was impossible.

“My mommy is alive.””

I pulled her close.

“Yes.””

She cried against my chest.

“She’s alive.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying too.

But now I understood.

She wasn’t the mastermind.

She was a piece of something bigger.

I turned to Evelyn.

“What did you do?””

She remained silent.

“Where is she?””

No answer.

“Where is Lily’s mother?””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“I knew she was alive.””

The room erupted.

Vanessa looked at her brother.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“I found out recently.””

“Recently?””

He looked at me.

“She contacted me.””

“Why you?””

He hesitated.

“Because she didn’t trust anyone else.””

That sentence hit.

Not Vanessa.

Not Evelyn.

Not Caleb.

Daniel.

The person I thought was part of the problem.

Maybe he was part of the truth.

I looked at the video again.

The woman I loved.

The woman I buried.

The woman who had somehow been fighting alone.

Then I looked at Lily.

She was still holding onto me.

For years, I thought my greatest fear was losing her.

I never imagined my greatest fear would be learning that she had been taken from me in another way.

A secret way.

A way hidden behind paperwork and lies.

Evelyn finally spoke.

“You don’t understand what will happen if she returns.””

I turned.

“Why?””

“Because everything changes.””

“Good.””

Her expression hardened.

“You think this is a victory?””

I held Lily’s hand.

“No.””

I looked at my daughter.

“This is the first honest thing that has happened today.””

Then my phone rang.

Not a message.

A call.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Marcus?””

My entire body froze.

I couldn’t speak.

Because after all these years…

After all the grief…

After all the lies…

The woman I thought I lost forever said my name.

And then she added:

“Don’t trust Vanessa.””

I looked at the bride standing across the chapel.

Vanessa’s face went white.

May you like

Because she knew.

She knew exactly why Lily’s mother had said that.
