Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Too Much
The stranger’s words stayed in the air like smoke.
*“Keeping Marcus Reed from discovering who Lily’s real guardian was supposed to be.””*
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not the guests.
Not the pastor.
Not even Vanessa.
The only sound in the chapel was Lily’s quiet breathing against my shoulder.
I held her tighter.
“Who are you?””
The man stepped farther inside.
His expensive suit matched the wedding guests, but everything else about him felt wrong. He didn’t look surprised to be there.
He looked like someone arriving exactly when he planned to.
“My name is Daniel Cole.””
Vanessa’s brother.
I had heard the name before.
A few times.
Always briefly.
Always followed by Vanessa changing the subject.
I looked at her.
“You told me he lived out of state.””
Daniel smiled slightly.
“She left out a lot of details.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Daniel, leave.””
He ignored her.
Instead, he looked at Lily.
And my entire body reacted.
“No.””
My voice came out immediately.
Everyone looked at me.
I stepped between him and my daughter.
“You don’t look at her like that.””
Daniel tilted his head.
“Protective.””
“She’s my daughter.””
“Is she?””
The question hit like a punch.
Lily grabbed my jacket.
I felt her fingers trembling.
I lowered my voice.
“Don’t talk about her like she isn’t standing right here.””
Daniel sighed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She couldn’t do it.””
Vanessa looked away.
“Daniel.””
“You had months.””
“I tried.””
“You hesitated.””
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Neither answered.
And that made my anger grow.
I stepped forward.
“I’m done being the only person in the room who doesn’t know what’s happening.””
Daniel studied me.
Then he reached into his jacket.
Several guests gasped.
I immediately moved Lily behind me.
But Daniel only pulled out a folder.
Another folder.
“This is why Vanessa wanted you to sign.””
He held it up.
“This is why Lily needed to be gone before the ceremony.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Stop.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You had your chance.””
I grabbed the folder from his hand.
Inside were documents.
Legal papers.
Reports.
Photographs.
My eyes scanned the first page.
Then stopped.
The name at the top made my chest tighten.
*Lily Reed.*
I turned the page.
There were records I had never seen.
Medical information.
School documents.
Custody forms.
And one phrase repeated several times.
*Emergency guardianship transfer.*
My hands started shaking.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She looked like she wanted to cry.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
A bitter, broken sound.
“Protect me?””
“You don’t know everything about Lily’s situation.””
“She’s my child.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“But there are things you don’t know about her mother.””
The room became still.
My daughter’s mother.
The woman who had died three years earlier.
The woman whose memory I protected every day.
I lowered my voice.
“What does she have to do with this?””
Daniel answered.
“She left something behind.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“A condition.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“A condition for what?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, stop.””
He looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
Then he looked at me.
“Lily’s mother created a legal agreement before she died.””
My stomach tightened.
“She created a what?””
“A guardianship agreement.””
I looked at Lily.
Then back at him.
“And why would I not know about this?””
Daniel was silent.
That silence said more than words.
I turned to Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
The room erupted.
My mother covered her mouth.
My brother whispered something under his breath.
I couldn’t hear any of it.
Because all I could hear was Vanessa admitting it.
“You knew.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked down.
I stepped closer.
“When I signed?””
Her silence answered.
I held up the document.
“The signature.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The word barely came out.
I felt like the ground moved beneath me.
“What were you making me sign?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“A temporary guardianship transfer.””
The chapel went silent.
I stared at her.
“You wanted me to give up custody?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
She wiped her eyes.
“You don’t understand.””
I shook my head.
“No. I understand perfectly.””
“No, Marcus.””
Her voice became desperate.
“The document wasn’t meant to take Lily away forever.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because if you knew the truth, you would never sign.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Who wanted this?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
Someone powerful.
Someone who had been controlling everything from behind the scenes.
Then Lily quietly spoke.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
She was crying.
“Are you going to leave me?””
My heart broke.
I immediately knelt beside her.
“Never.””
“But everyone keeps talking about me like I’m something they can move.””
That sentence destroyed me.
I held her face gently.
“You are not something.””
She cried.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For being the reason people fight.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Daniel.
Then every person in that chapel.
“You are the reason I fight.””
The stranger’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Because he realized something.
The plan had failed.
I wasn’t signing anything.
I wasn’t letting anyone take my daughter.
Then Daniel said quietly:
“There’s one thing you still don’t know about the agreement.””
I stood.
“What?””
He looked at Lily.
And then said:
“The person who requested custody wasn’t Vanessa.””
May you like
My blood went cold.
“Then who was it?””
