Chapter 2: The Second Note

I had spent my entire life believing I could read people.

I could tell when someone was nervous.

I could tell when someone was lying.

I could tell when someone was hiding something.

But standing in that chapel, holding my daughter while my future wife stood frozen in front of me, I realized something terrifying.

I had been looking at Vanessa for months.

And I had never truly seen her.

Nia carefully removed the second note from Lily’s small pink suitcase.

The suitcase was decorated with tiny white stars. Lily had picked it herself because she said it looked like something a princess would carry.

Now it looked like evidence.

Like someone had planned for my daughter to disappear.

“Give it to me,” Vanessa said.

Her voice was sharp.

Too sharp.

Everyone noticed.

Nia looked at her.

“I’m sorry?””

Vanessa forced a laugh.

“I mean, this is getting ridiculous. A child’s suitcase? A handwritten note? Someone is clearly trying to ruin today.””

I stared at her.

“Someone?””

She looked at me.

“Yes. Someone.””

I walked closer.

“Then why are you scared of what’s inside?””

Her jaw tightened.

“I’m not scared.””

“Your face says something different.””

A few guests whispered.

Vanessa looked around.

She hated losing control.

That was something I had noticed during our relationship. She loved perfection. The perfect house.

The perfect pictures. The perfect image.

But today, perfection was cracking.

Nia handed me the note.

“Marcus, I didn’t read everything. I only saw the first line.””

My fingers unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was different from the first note.

Bigger.

More aggressive.

The message said:

*ONCE HE SIGNS, THE GIRL IS GONE FOR GOOD.*

My stomach twisted.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Signs what?””

Her face went pale.

For the first time since I met her, she had no perfect answer.

No rehearsed explanation.

No calm smile.

Nothing.

“Marcus…”

“Signs what?””

The pastor quietly stepped away.

Guests watched in complete silence.

My daughter held onto my tuxedo jacket.

I lowered my voice.

“Was this about Lily?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

That was all the answer I needed.

I stepped back.

“You were trying to remove my daughter from my life.””

“That is not what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Finally, she whispered:

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

Her eyes became colder.

“You think everything is simple because you’re a father.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“I am a father. That’s the point.””

“She changed everything.””

The words hung in the air.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I turned away from Vanessa immediately.

“No one is changing anything.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You promised me we would have a fresh start.””

“I promised to build a family.””

“And I wanted one.””

“You wanted one without my daughter.””

Her silence answered.

My mother stepped forward.

“Vanessa, what did you do?””

Vanessa looked embarrassed.

Not sorry.

Embarrassed.

“There are things you don’t know.””

I held Lily closer.

“Then tell me.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the guests.

Then toward the cameras.

Then back to me.

“I can’t do this here.””

I almost laughed.

“Here?””

I looked around the chapel.

“The place where you planned to marry me?””

She clenched her fists.

“Marcus, you’re making a mistake.””

“No. I think I made one months ago.””

Her expression broke slightly.

For a second, I saw the woman I thought I knew.

The woman who brought Lily birthday gifts.

The woman who helped her practice flower-girl steps.

The woman who told me she loved my daughter.

Then I remembered the note.

And I realized maybe those moments were only part of a performance.

Nia suddenly spoke again.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

She looked uncomfortable.

“What?””

Nia glanced at Lily.

Then at me.

“I found the suitcase hidden behind the chapel storage door.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Hidden?””

“Yes.””

“Who put it there?””

Nia hesitated.

That hesitation made my blood run cold.

“Answer me.””

She took a breath.

“I saw Vanessa carrying it earlier.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Nia looked shocked.

“I’m sorry, but it’s true.””

“You’re accusing me at my own wedding?””

“No,” Nia said quietly.

“I’m telling him what I saw.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Marcus, don’t listen to her.””

I looked down at Lily.

Her small hand was gripping mine.

She was scared.

The person who was supposed to protect her had become the person she feared.

Then Vanessa moved suddenly.

She reached toward my hand.

Toward the second note.

“Give me that.””

I pulled it away.

Her voice changed.

“Marcus, please.””

Not angry anymore.

Desperate.

And that scared me more.

Because I finally understood.

Whatever was written on that paper…

Whatever she wanted hidden…

It wasn’t just about stopping Lily from walking down the aisle.

It was about something she believed she could lose.

Something much bigger.

And before I could ask another question, Vanessa whispered:

“You have no idea what happens if you find out the truth.””
