Chapter 13: The Truth Vanessa Carried

“Don’t trust Vanessa.””

The words echoed through the phone.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

After everything I had discovered that day, after every secret and every lie, I thought there was nothing left that could surprise me.

I was wrong.

Because the person I spent months planning a future with was still standing ten feet away from me.

And the woman I thought I lost forever was warning me about her.

I looked at Vanessa.

She saw my expression change.

She didn’t need to hear the words.

She already knew.

“Who is it?””

Her voice was barely audible.

I lowered the phone.

“Nobody.””

The lie came out before I could stop it.

And Vanessa noticed.

Of course she did.

She had spent months hiding things from me.

She knew what hiding looked like.

“Marcus.””

I looked at her.

“Not now.””

Her face fell.

Not because I was angry.

Because she knew I was scared.

I walked away from the crowd.

I needed space.

I needed air.

I needed to understand how the woman I buried could still be alive.

The voice on the phone spoke again.

“Marcus?””

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I can’t tell you yet.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because they’re listening.””

I looked around the chapel.

At Evelyn.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

At everyone who had secrets.

“Who is they?””

Another pause.

Then:

“The people who made sure I disappeared.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Tell me everything.””

“I will. But first, you need to know something about Vanessa.””

I looked back.

Vanessa was standing alone.

The wedding dress.

The flowers.

The life that was supposed to begin today.

Everything felt fake.

“What?””

“She didn’t start this.””

I frowned.

The answer shocked me.

“She didn’t?””

“No.””

“Then why did you tell me not to trust her?””

The voice became softer.

“Because Vanessa knows the truth.””

I looked at her.

“She knew I was alive.””

Silence.

The words hit harder than anything else.

I walked back toward Vanessa.

Her eyes immediately filled with fear.

“Marcus…”

“You knew.””

She stopped.

The entire chapel watched.

“What?””

“You knew she was alive.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

Slowly.

Like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Yes.””

The room erupted.

My mother gasped.

Caleb stepped back.

Daniel looked away.

I stared at Vanessa.

“How long?””

She whispered:

“Two years.””

Two years.

I felt the anger rise.

Not explosive.

Cold.

“You let me grieve.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“I couldn’t.””

“You couldn’t?””

She shook her head.

“My father threatened me.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She didn’t deny it.

“What did he threaten?””

Vanessa looked down.

“He said if I told you, Lily would disappear.””

My jaw tightened.

“So you chose silence.””

“I chose Lily.””

The answer stopped me.

Because I believed she meant it.

But I also knew something else.

She chose fear.

And fear still caused damage.

“You should have told me.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

I looked at Lily.

She was watching Vanessa carefully.

Not with anger.

With confusion.

Because children don’t understand adult betrayal.

They only understand who made them feel safe.

I turned back.

“Why marry me?””

Vanessa cried.

“Because I loved you.””

“After knowing this?””

“Yes.””

“After knowing Lily’s mother was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She wiped her face.

“Because I thought I could protect both of you.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying to control something you didn’t understand.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

That honesty hurt more.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I need to tell you the rest.””

I waited.

“The day your wife disappeared…”

I froze.

“Don’t call her that.””

Vanessa nodded.

“The day Lily’s mother disappeared, my father was involved.””

Everyone went silent.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

“My father knew about the trust. He knew about Lily. He knew Marcus was the only person who could protect her.””

I stared.

“So he removed her.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He staged everything.””

My stomach turned.

“And you helped him.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word was almost impossible to hear.

I stepped back.

“You helped him take her away.””

“I helped cover it.””

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

I looked at Lily.

Again.

Everyone’s fear.

Everyone’s excuses.

Everyone had a reason.

But Lily still suffered.

That was the only thing that mattered.

Then the chapel doors opened.

A woman stood there.

Weak.

Tired.

Holding onto the doorframe.

Everyone turned.

My heart stopped.

Because after years of imagining this moment…

She was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Lily’s mother.

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

And whispered:

“I’m sorry I missed so much.””

Lily froze.

Then slowly stepped forward.

“Mommy?””

The woman broke down.

“Yes, baby.””

And Lily ran.

For the first time in years, my daughter ran toward the person I thought she had lost forever.

I stood there watching.

Feeling every emotion at once.

Joy.

Pain.

Anger.

Relief.

Then Lily’s mother looked at me.

And her expression changed.

Fear returned.

Because she knew something I didn’t.

She whispered:

“Marcus…”

I walked closer.

“What?””

Her eyes moved toward Evelyn.

Then Vanessa.

Then the documents.

“The person who arranged my disappearance…”

She swallowed.

“Was never Evelyn.””

The room froze.

“Then who?””

She looked directly at me.

May you like

And answered:

“Someone you invited to this wedding.””
