Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden Under White Flowers
The message stayed on my screen.
*DON’T LET VANESSA KNOW YOU FOUND PAGE TWO.*
I stared at the words until they stopped looking like words.
Someone had been watching.
Someone knew about the folder.
Someone knew Vanessa’s plan before I did.
And that meant one thing.
This had been bigger than a wedding problem.
This had been planned.
I locked my phone and looked at Vanessa.
“Who sent this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes moved away.
That was enough.
“You know.””
“No.””
“You know who knows.””
Her expression tightened.
“Marcus, you need to leave this alone.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You’re telling me to leave something alone after trying to separate me from my daughter?””
“I’m trying to stop you from making a mistake.””
“You already made yours.””
The chapel was silent.
Even the guests who couldn’t hear every word understood the tension.
My brother stepped closer.
“Marcus, what’s in that folder?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because I wasn’t sure how to say it.
How do you explain that the woman standing in a wedding dress was holding a future hostage?
How do you explain that the person who promised to love your child was planning around her?
I looked at Nia.
“Can you check if anything else was inside the suitcase?””
She nodded.
“I already did.””
“And?””
She looked nervous.
“There was another envelope.””
Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.
“What?””
Everyone noticed.
I turned.
“Another envelope?””
Nia slowly reached into the suitcase.
She pulled out a plain white envelope.
No name.
No writing.
Just sealed.
Vanessa moved forward.
“Don’t open that.””
I stopped.
The words landed harder than a scream.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why shouldn’t I open it?””
Her face changed.
She realized too late.
Every reaction.
Every movement.
Every desperate attempt to stop me.
It was telling the truth for her.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A single photograph.
My fingers froze.
Because I recognized the people in it.
Me.
Vanessa.
And Lily.
Taken six months earlier.
We were at a park.
Lily was laughing.
Vanessa had her arm around my shoulder.
It was one of my favorite memories.
Then I turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
*SHE WAS NEVER PART OF THE PLAN.*
My heart dropped.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who wrote this?””
She whispered:
“Marcus…”
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“Who wrote this?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
And finally, she said something I never expected.
“I didn’t start this.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You think I wanted this?””
I stared at her.
“You brought the suitcase.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
She looked terrified.
“The agreement.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What agreement?””
She closed her eyes.
For a second, she looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not controlling.
Just scared.
“There are things about Lily’s situation you don’t know.””
My entire body went still.
“My daughter’s situation?””
She nodded.
“I was told you would never sign unless you believed she was safe.””
I felt anger rise.
“Safe from who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“Who?””
The chapel doors suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Wearing a dark suit.
I didn’t recognize him.
But Vanessa did.
The color disappeared from her face.
The man looked directly at me.
Then at the folder in my hand.
“You weren’t supposed to find that today.””
My grip tightened.
“Who are you?””
He ignored me.
His eyes went to Vanessa.
“You failed.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“Don’t do this.””
The man smiled.
Cold.
Calm.
“You had one job.””
My heart raced.
“What job?””
The man finally looked at me.
And his next words changed everything.
“Keeping Marcus Reed from discovering who Lily’s real guardian was supposed to be.””
The entire chapel went silent.
I looked down at my daughter.
Then back at the stranger.
Because suddenly, the question was no longer why Vanessa wanted Lily gone.

The question was:
Who had been trying to take my daughter from me all along?
