Chapter 8: The Name On The Paper
Nobody wanted to answer.
That was becoming the most terrifying pattern of the entire day.
Every time I asked a question, someone looked away.
Every time I got closer to the truth, another secret appeared.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who requested custody?””
He remained silent.
I walked closer.
“I asked you a question.””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Marcus, please.””
I stared at her.
“Please what?””
She looked broken.
“Please don’t do this in front of everyone.””
I looked around the chapel.
At the guests.
At my family.
At Lily.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Why shouldn’t they know?””
Daniel interrupted.
“Because Vanessa was trying to keep her family from falling apart.””
I turned toward him.
“Her family?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I laughed.
“You mean the family that tried to remove my daughter?””
His expression hardened.
“You think this is about jealousy.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“It’s about inheritance.””
The word stopped me.
“What?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Daniel.””
He continued.
“Lily’s mother had assets.””
I stared.
“Assets?””
“A trust.””
My mind raced.
I had never known about any trust.
I knew my daughter’s mother had worked hard. I knew she had savings. I knew she wanted Lily protected.
But this?
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
He pointed toward the document.
“When Lily turned eighteen, everything would legally belong to her.””
I looked at Lily.
Then back at him.
“And?””
“And someone wanted control before then.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
That was when I understood.
She knew.
She had always known.
“Vanessa.””
She slowly looked at me.
“Tell me.””
Her lips trembled.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
“Tell me.””
She looked down.
“The person who filed the request…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“The person who wanted temporary guardianship…”
Another pause.
“Was my father.””
The chapel went silent.
Her father.
A man I had never met.
A man who had somehow been connected to my daughter’s future.
I stared at Vanessa.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“He found out about the trust.””
“And he wanted Lily?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
“He wanted control.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That told me enough.
“You were helping him.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“At first.””
“At first?””
He sighed.
“I thought he was protecting the family.””
I shook my head.
“Protecting?””
I looked at Lily.
“She’s seven years old.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
My voice became louder.
“You don’t know what it feels like to watch your child think she’s unwanted.””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody could argue with that.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus, I never wanted Lily hurt.””
“But you hurt her.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I know.””
That was the first honest thing she had said.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because my father convinced me you would never choose me if you knew.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He told me Lily would always come first.””
“She should.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I know she should.””
For a moment, I saw something different.
Regret.
Real regret.
But regret didn’t erase what happened.
It didn’t erase the suitcase.
The notes.
The fear in my daughter’s eyes.
I looked at the document.
“There’s still one thing I don’t understand.””
“What?””
“Why today?””
Vanessa looked confused.
“What?””
“Why the wedding?””
Nobody answered.
I continued.
“You had months to do this.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
I noticed.
“You know.””
He looked away.
“Daniel.””
He finally spoke.
“Your wedding gave them the perfect opportunity.””
“For what?””
“To make the transfer look voluntary.””
My stomach dropped.
“They wanted me to sign as part of a marriage agreement.””
Daniel nodded.
“They planned to say you were creating a stable family arrangement.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You were going to marry me and then take my daughter away.””
She started crying.
“I wasn’t.””
“But you brought the papers.””
“Yes.””
“You hid the truth.””
“Yes.””
“You let her think she was being sent away.””
Vanessa couldn’t answer.
Because she knew.
That was the one thing she couldn’t explain.
The chapel doors suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman in a dark coat stood there.
Older.
Calm.
Holding a black folder.
Daniel’s face changed.
Vanessa froze.
I recognized the fear immediately.
The same fear they both had shown before.
The woman looked directly at me.
Then at Lily.
Then smiled.
“I see you finally found out.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
She walked closer.
“My name is Evelyn Cole.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Mom…”
My heart sank.
The woman smiled.
“And I’m the person who has been trying to protect what belongs to my family.””
She opened the folder.
Inside was another document.
She placed it on the table.
Then she said the words that made the entire chapel freeze.
“Marcus, you need to know something.””
May you like
She looked at Lily.
“She was never supposed to be your daughter legally.””
