Chapter 5: The Signature She Wanted

I stared at the document.

I read the title once.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

Vanessa.

“Marcus.””

I turned slowly.

She stood in the doorway.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

Still looking like the woman everyone came to celebrate.

But now I saw something different.

Not a bride.

A person who had planned something.

“What is this?””

She swallowed.

“It’s complicated.””

“No.””

I lifted the document.

“It’s actually very simple.””

My voice shook.

“You wanted me to sign this.””

Nobody spoke.

The guests outside couldn’t see the pages.

But they could see my face.

And they knew something was wrong.

Vanessa stepped inside.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“No.””

I held up my hand.

“You listen.””

She stopped.

“You put a suitcase by the exit.””

Her expression changed.

“You wrote a note.””

“I didn’t write that.””

“Then why did Lily point at you?””

She had no answer.

I looked back at the document.

The words blurred slightly.

Because suddenly I understood why she needed Lily gone before the ceremony.

Why she needed me emotional.

Why she wanted the wedding to happen quickly.

She didn’t want me thinking.

She wanted me signing.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around.

At the guests.

At Nia.

At Lily.

Then she whispered:

“This was supposed to happen privately.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Privately?””

I stepped closer.

“You tried to send my daughter away privately too?””

Her face hardened.

“Your daughter is not the issue.””

I stared at her.

“Then what is?””

She looked at the paper.

“You.””

That answer confused me.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Vanessa took a breath.

“You think you’re protecting Lily. You think I’m the villain.””

“You sent my child away.””

“I was trying to protect our future.””

“Our future?””

She nodded.

“If we stayed married, everything would become harder.””

I looked at the document again.

“What exactly were you trying to change?””

She didn’t answer.

“Nobody leaves this room until you explain.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to threaten me.””

“I’m not threatening you.””

I pointed toward Lily.

“I’m being her father.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked at Lily.

And something about her expression bothered me.

It wasn’t hatred.

It wasn’t anger.

It was calculation.

Like she was trying to decide what to say next.

Then she softened her voice.

“Lily, sweetheart, can you give the adults a moment?””

My daughter immediately stepped closer to me.

“No.””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

Lily held my hand tighter.

“I want my daddy.””

That sentence cut deeper than anything.

Vanessa looked away.

Nia moved beside Lily.

“You heard her.””

Vanessa looked at Nia.

“You’re really choosing this?””

Nia frowned.

“I’m choosing what’s right.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

I looked at the document.

“What does that mean?””

She didn’t respond.

Instead, she reached toward the folder.

I pulled it away.

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“Marcus, give me that.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She stepped closer.

The calm mask was gone.

“Because if you read everything, you’ll destroy the only chance you have left.””

I stared at her.

“My chance?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

She looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw fear again.

Not fear of losing the wedding.

Fear of losing control.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked down.

A new message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*DON’T LET VANESSA KNOW YOU FOUND PAGE TWO.*

My blood went cold.

I looked at the folder.

Slowly.

Carefully.

I opened it.

Page one was in my hand.

But page two…

Was missing.

I looked up at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

Because she knew.

May you like

Someone else knew too.

And whoever sent that message knew exactly what Vanessa was hiding.
